The Fortress of Șoimoș
The ruins of the fortress are located on the hill “Cioaca Tăutului”, 2 km northeast of Lipova, at an altitude of 129 meters. The first documentary information about the fortress dates back to 1278. Around 1440-1446, the fortress was rebuilt from scratch by Iancu de Hunedoara. Between 1552 and 1699, the fortress played an important role in the battles to defend the Romanian lands against the Ottoman invaders, being lost and recaptured several times. In 1599-1600, it came under the rule of Mihai Viteazul. In the 18th century, it lost its military importance, and in 1788, it was abandoned by the garrison and gradually fell into ruin.
Lipova Town Museum
Today, the Bocu House houses the Lipova City Museum. It belonged to politician Sever Bocu between 1922 and 1953. The interior of the building is elegantly and harmoniously decorated.
Five rooms of the permanent exhibition still preserve the sumptuous interior decorations commissioned by Bocu: inlaid parquet flooring, Viennese tile stoves, crystal chandeliers and mirrors, and furniture. The exhibition features the art collection donated to the museum by the Eleonora Costescu and Vasile Varga family in 1980: modern Romanian paintings (Ion Andreescu, Nicolae Tonitza), paintings from the Flemish, Italian, English, French, and Hungarian schools, as well as decorative art pieces (silverware, porcelain, glassware).
