Miercurea Ciuc (in Hungarian: Csíkszereda, in German: Szeklerburg) is the county seat of Harghita County. It is located in the Szeklerland, a predominantly Hungarian-speaking ethnocultural region in eastern Transylvania, in the valley of the Olt River.

In the Jigodin district of Miercurea Ciuc, the remains of three Dacian fortifications were found, belonging to the Dacian culture of the 1st century. Between 1876 and 1918, Csíkszereda was the seat of Csík County in the historical Szeklerland in the Kingdom of Hungary. After the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, it became part of the Kingdom of Romania.

Miercurea Ciuc became part of Hungary again between 1940 and 1944 as a result of the Second Vienna Award. In March 1945, it was returned to Romania, which was confirmed by the Paris Peace Treaties of 1947. Between 1952 and 1960, the city belonged to the Magyar Autonomous Region, which was later renamed the Mureș-Magyar Autonomous Region between 1960 and 1968. Since 1968, Miercurea Ciuc has been the county seat of Harghita County.

Homorod (German: Hamruden, Hungarian: Homoród) is a community in Brasov County, near the town of Rupea. It consists of three villages: Homorod, Jimbor (Sommerburg, Szekelyzsombor), and Mercheasa (Streitfort, Mirkvásár).

The Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Peter, featuring a square choir, semicircular apse, and west tower, dates back to the 13th century. A massive eight-story keep was built above the choir, with a side length of 11 m and walls 3 m thick at the ground floor. After a fire, the church hall received its current coffered ceiling in 1792.

The community is located in the northern part of the county, on the border with Harghita County, about 60 km from Brașov. It sits on the banks of the Homorod River, at the confluence of the Homorodul Mare and Homorodul Mic.

In 2011, the largest statue of Jesus in Eastern Europe was erected on Mount Gordon in Harghita County, between Odorheiu Secuiesc and Praid, near the village of Lupeni.

Pictures from last Saturday (June 27, 2026), taken on the way to the statue. The last 6 km are on a dirt and gravel road, and the traffic—especially motorcycles, trikes, and ATVs speeding along—is quite remarkable 😅. The road climbs steeply, and for the last two kilometers we decided not to push the ground clearance of our car (a Ford Focus) any further, so we stopped about 2 km before the statue, at the edge of a large forest.

The statue, known as the "Heart of Jesus," is about 22 meters high, built of iron and stainless steel, and was funded through donations collected by the local administration of the village of Lupeni.

The Red Lake (Lacul Rosu) is a natural dam lake in Harghita County in northeastern Romania.

It is located in the Hasmas Mountains on the upper reaches of the Bicaz River and at the foot of the Hasmașul Mare peak near the Bicaz Gorge, about 25 kilometers from Gheorgheni and about 30 kilometers from Bicaz (Neamt County).

Those who follow us know that we also report on parking in the cities of Romania. We find parking in Miercurea Ciuc, the county seat of Harghita in Transylvania, particularly interesting.

In the city center, you can choose between 30 minutes, one hour (1 ora), or even 1 year (1 an) 😅. The latter is definitely recommended for long-term parkers, but also for repeat parkers it’s a very good deal 🥰. If you have to pay 5 Lei (1 Euro) for an hour, you get the whole year for a "mere" 500 Lei (100 Euro), which would mean only 27 cents per day.

How did we solve our parking problem? About 500 meters away begins zone 1, where you also have the option for 1 day, 1 week, 1 / 3 / 6 months. A day here costs 15 Lei (3 Euro) and again we see... the annual flat rate in the center is really a "bargain" 😁.

Note & info: The SMS can only be sent from a ROMANIAN phone number. So, if necessary, ask a passerby and hand them the fee in cash 😅🙈

Conclusion about the city: A beautiful small town, apparently very cold in winter (temperatures as low as -38 degrees have been recorded), surrounded by mountains, very clean and well-kept, and if you speak Hungarian or English, you’ll get by much easier than with Romanian. It is also said that many people here speak German, but we didn’t have much time to find out or test it ourselves. But, for the next visit, it’s definitely on the list.

# Targu Ocna Salt Mine, Bacau County.
It is the third largest salt mine and one of the oldest salt mines in Romania. It is home to the Trotuș mine at a depth of 240 m, the country's largest facility for the treatment of respiratory diseases. The mine is also home to one of the few places of worship in Romania built in salt mines and dedicated to Saint Varvara. The salt mine is still used today for the extraction, processing and marketing of salt in Romania and abroad. Between 90,000 and 120,000 tons of salt are extracted every year.

Salina Targu Ocna is one of the oldest salt mines in Romania and is mentioned in documents dating back to 1502 and has been listed as a salt extraction area since at least 1353.

This gorge is a particularly picturesque area in Romania, located in the central part of the Hasmas Mountains in the northeast of the country, in the counties of Neamt and Harghita.

The gorge begins near Lacul Roșu (Red Lake), and as you follow the road, you can admire many bizarre rock formations, huge boulders, and swirling water.
