Târgu Mureș ( German Neumarkt am Mieresch, Hungarian Marosvásárhely ) is a small town, but its history is striking.

Archaeological excavations confirm that the city of Târgu Mureș has been inhabited since the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. Remains of bones, clay pots and a number of prehistoric dwellings have been found.

Târgu Mureș was founded by the Szeklers. It was first mentioned in a document in 1300 as “Forum Siculorum”. The history of the city, like that of Transylvania as a whole, was determined by the Kingdom of Hungary, by the Principality of Transylvania and from the end of the 17th century by the Habsburg Monarchy, later Hungary and then Romania.

In 1482 the town was granted the right to hold markets, a feature that depended on the city’s location at the crossroads of important commercial routes.

In the first half of the 16th century, Târgu Mureș developed into one of the most prosperous cities in Transylvania and became an important center of handicraft production and trade.

Sightseeing features

The Palace of Culture

A striking building with a roof decorated with colorful mosaics. It is one of the most representative buildings, in the style of the Lechnerien school. The building was constructed in just two years between 1911 and 1913, which was a remarkable achievement for the time.

The beauty of the building is emphasized by numerous frescoes and stained glass windows. The impressive 45 m long lobby is fitted with Carrara marble and two large mirrors. A special room is the “Hall of Mirrors”. This room is the finest in the palace, and houses a triptych of Venetian mirrors.

Medieval Castle Târgu Mureş

The entire complex of the fortress has an area of 4.3 hectares and consists of a fortified enclosure with 7 bastions connected by walls. Inside the fort were, among other things, the Calvinist Reformed Church and a warehouse.

The first fortress was destroyed as a result of an invasion in 1492.

In 1602 the reconstruction of the fortress began, pentagonal, but with only 5 bastions instead of 7. Today, various cultural-artistic events are held here.

In addition, the fortress invites you to walk, relax and eat through a small but beautiful and well-kept park and a restaurant.
