The gorges are located in the commune of Bănița in Hunedoara county and stretch along high limestone walls. They are about 300 meters long and were dug deep into the limestone by water. On calm summer days they can be visited, although waterproof shoes are a must as the gorge path also passes through water.

The height of the rock walls is about 10-15 meters and show how water has eroded the rock. In many places, the rocks form a roof, which was formed by horizontal erosion by current over hundreds of years.

Country life in the Apuseni Mountains

Wildly romantic for some, hard work with many hardships for others, in the Apuseni mountains the two meet. Who is happier… each must decide for themselves. More is not always more… at least not when it comes to your own satisfaction.

Dovetail … din Călimănești | Valcea county

(28 October 2023 / Images: October 2023)

It’s been two years since I saw the first pigeon tail in Galati. Yesterday I was in Călimănești and there it was again.

At first glance, the extremely fast wing beats (up to 80 beats per second) of the dovetail (Macroglossum stellatarum) suggest that you are looking at a hummingbird, but it is actually a butterfly (hawkmoth family).

This butterfly can be found from Spain to Japan, along the entire east-west length of the Palearctic*.

*In biogeography, the Palearctic region, also known as the Palearctica, refers to a zoogeographic region of the Old World that traditionally encompasses Europe, North Africa and Asia (except the fore and hinter parts of India and the southern Arabian Peninsula), as well as the islands off these areas (source: Wikipedia).

Nun (Mantodea)

(28 October 2023)

A balmy evening in Bucharest in August 2022 invites you to linger outside the hotel. Another guest is just saying … “Look, something’s crawling up there” and yes, we see it too … A prayer shawl. Familiar from biology lessons, movies and TV … but never seen in real life.

The mantis or praying mantis (Mantodea) is an order of insects and belongs to the flying insects (Pterygota). They are often referred to as mantids (text: Wikipedia).

There is a small lake and forest nearby, and the animals also come (fly) at night to the neighboring hotel. It was a very pleasant experience for us and, after a short photo shoot, our model … went back to the next bush.

Timisoara, the first city with electric street lighting in Europe

(27 October 2023)

137.5 years ago, Timișoara proved its uniqueness as a city in Europe.

On November 12, 1884, almost 60 kilometers of streets in the center of Timișoara were electrically illuminated* with 731 lamps. At the time, it was the record in Europe and second in the world after New York.

* The number of lamps and the number of kilometers are based on different sources, with the same claim on the internet.

** Of course, the lamps were smaller than the one pictured. This lamp is there only as a souvenir and is no longer used for lighting in Timișoara.

Viscri is characterized by both the fortified church and the village structure characterized by Saxon farms.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1185. The fortified church stands at the north-western end of the village.

In the 12th century, Szekler (a Hungarian-speaking population group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here before the German settlers. It was extended in the 13th century. After the first Turkish invasions, the church was fortified in the 14th century and a defensive ring with defensive towers was erected.

Corvin Castle / Fortress in Hunedoara

(22 October 2023)

The Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Castle, in German as Eisenmarkt Castle, in Romanian as Corvin’s Castle or Huniazilor Castle, in Hungarian as Vajdahunyadi var) is one of the most important non-clerical buildings in Transylvania.

The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the south-western part of Hunedoara (German: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The listed castle bears many other names (Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvineștilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul din Piața de Fier, Castelul Negru, Castelul Vajdahunyad, Castelul Hunyadi), which can be attributed to its location or its owners.

After 1440, the Hungarian statesman and army commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification rebuilt and turned it into the Hunyadi family’s ancestral castle. In the second construction phase, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, further major changes were made to the building under Prince Gábor Bethlen, so today’s castle is a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle has been in Austrian hands since 1724 and has been Romanian state property since 1918. Apart from being a tourist attraction, the castle is (and has been) used as a backdrop for a number of Romanian and international film productions. The castle now houses a museum.

City Wall Sibiu / Hermannstadt

(22 October 2023)

Fragment from the history of Sibiu: In 1438, the Turks besieged the city but failed to conquer it. On the other hand, the entire surrounding area was devastated.

As a result of the Turkish threat, three rings of walls with 39 towers and several large gates were built in the city. Thus it became the largest fortified city in the Kingdom of Hungary. Sibiu withstood repeated sieges by the Turks, who never succeeded in conquering the city.

In 1442, the Turks were defeated at the city gates, and the mayor Thomas Trautenberger became a legend. Therefore, in 1445, Pope Eugene IV designated Sibiu as a wall and a shield. Sibiu as a wall and shield of Christianity.

However, armies passing through and setting up camp in front of the city devastated again and again the entire surrounding countryside. Only once, the Hungarian prince of Transylvania, Gabriel Bathory, managed to occupy the town in a simulation, plunder it and drive all the German inhabitants from its solid walls – a bitter lesson that led to even greater vigilance and distrust on the part of the Germans from then on.

Around 1500, Sibiu already had around 6000 inhabitants. During the Reformation, the writings of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon reached the city from 1523. In 1543, the Protestant confession of faith was introduced, as the estates were left free to decide for themselves what they believed. On March 31, 1556, the entire lower town and part of the upper town burned in a fire. Some 550 buildings were destroyed.

Sibiu was the political center of the Transylvanian Saxons and the seat of the Universitas Saxonum, a kind of Transylvanian parliament, which dealt with Transylvanian Saxon affairs until 1878 and was a symbol of the unity and political independence of the Transylvanian Saxons.

Dove’s tail … from Galati

(17 October 2023 / Images: July 2021)

Seen, photographed and immediately googled. At first glance, the dove’s tail (Macroglossum stellatarum) makes you think you’re looking at a hummingbird because of the extremely fast wing beats (up to 80 beats per second), but it’s actually a butterfly (in the hawk family).

This butterfly can be found from Spain to Japan, all along the east-west length of the Palearctic* … ours are from Galati (a city in south-eastern Romania) and therefore probably speak fluent Romanian.

*The Palearctic region, also called the Palearctica, in biogeography refers to a zoogeographic region of the Old World that traditionally includes Europe, North Africa and Asia (excluding the fore and hind Indies and the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula), as well as the islands off these areas (source: Wikipedia).

Curtea de Argeș Cathedral (Curtea de Argeș Monastery, Curtea de Argeș Cathedral) is one of the most famous buildings in Romania. It stands on the foundations of a monastery and is located about one and a half kilometers north of the city. It resembles a very large and ornate mausoleum and was built in the Byzantine style with Moorish arabesques.

Hurezi Monastery (Horezu Monastery) | Valcea county

(14 October 2023)

Horezu Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of nuns located in the historical region of Muntenia Mică, in Valcea county.

Situated at the foot of the Căpățânii Mountains, a mountain massif in the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romanii de Jos, the monastery is about three kilometers (as the crow flies) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (huhurezi in Romanian) nesting in the woods around the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714), then Prince of Muntenia, and completed in 1709. Until 1862 it was a men’s monastery. After the monks were transferred to Bistrița, nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is a listed building.

Situated on a hill, the monastery is surrounded by two fortifications. The outer, smaller wall encircles the entire property of the monastery with its holy orders. The second consists of buildings of different heights on three sides and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side, through a bell tower, which has a massive wooden gate armored with steel. The monastery church of Saints Constantine and Helen, built in the center of the complex in the shape of a cross, is 32 meters long, 14 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697. There are several tombs in the vestibule of the church, the most beautiful one furnished with marble and with a carved lid intended for Prince Brâncoveanu, but which did not fulfill its purpose and was therefore never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and covered with gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was built in 1697. The chapel frescoes were made between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

Biserica Gheorghe / Mitropolia Veche is an Orthodox church in Iasi, which was built between 1761 and 1769 by Metropolitan* Gavriil Callimachi and serves as the Metropolitan Cathedral*.

* Since the beginning of Christianity, the office of metropolitan was held by a chief bishop who presided over a group of bishops and had his seat in a provincial capital (from Ancient Greek μητρόπολις, mētrópolis “mother city” (of a colony); cf. metropolis). The office of metropolitan still exists today in the Roman Catholic Church as well as in the Orthodox Churches, although the legal structure differs (citation: Wikipedia).

If you travel on the road (E671) from Timișoara to Arad, you will pass through the village of Vinga (Theresiopolis in German) about 25 km before Arad.

The two churches, which are very large for such a small community, are striking. The Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church, on the left in the picture) and the Roman Catholic Church (Catholic Church, on the right in the picture, but also in other pictures).

The first documentary mention of Vinga dates back to 1231. After being sacked and destroyed by the Turks, Vinga was relocated in 1737 and also in 1741 by about 125 families of “Bulgarian-Bavarians” from Ciprovts in western Bulgaria, who crossed the Danube and settled in various parts of the Banat Plain. On August 1, 1744, Vinga received the status of a town with magistrate and various privileges from Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.

Travel Diary Romania | Day 14 | Harman | Honey Mountain

(11 October 2023)

We are following the Zitzmann family through Romania, who not only allowed us to use photos from the trip (end of September 2023), but also to take the experiences. Thank you!

“Romania, day 14, today is the day of the fortified churches in Transylvania, where many German Saxons are and have been. In case of attacks on villages, the fortified churches could shelter the inhabitants of entire villages. Each family was given a small room. One fortified church had over 200 such rooms. There was also a school, a weaving mill, etc., because the villages were often besieged for a long time… very interesting to see, and in some of the fortified churches we were allowed to climb up to the tower by adventurous paths. Without safety precautions, this would be impossible here in Austria. We were told to be careful, steep steps. When standing under a bell tower that is supported by rotting wooden beams, you don’t have to think. Another day with many new impressions”.

Thanks to Gerhard Daniela Zitzmann for photos and text.

(11 October 2023)

We are following the Zitzmann family through Romania, who not only allowed us to use photos from the trip (end of September 2023), but also to take the experiences. Thank you!

“Romania, day 19, the Apuseni Mountains, we drive over mountain passes and, especially because of this, we pass through very original and simple villages, here rural life, crafts still matter. It all seems contemplative, but we suspect that life here demands people. Huge stacks of hay are brought from the fields by horse and cart to be stored. We visit a market, see a knife grinder, a broom maker and many small shops. A man was selling carved spoons. Tomorrow we visit an ice cave. It’s part of the Apuseni Nature Park and includes the most compact underground ice block in Europe, with a volume of 75,000 cubic meters and up to 26 meters thick. Let’s see what we see. We found another great place to sleep, with some woofies that we fed.”

The Castle of the Transylvanian Wolves is located in the village of Chimindina (Hunedoara County), just 15 minutes from the city of Deva.

“In the distant past, the Castle of the Wolves of Chimindia was the place where the Great White Wolf gathered the wolves of Dacia to plan support in the Dacian-Roman war. Rooted in a medieval history and used as a military base by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the castle combines historic architecture blended with the beauty of nature to provide an oasis of tranquility.

The 15,000-square-meter courtyard is illuminated with miniatures of traditional households and churches created by master painter Ion Rodo ș, the only Romanian folk master in the Guinness Book of Records. The courtyard also offers a spacious play area and the ticket price of 20 lei (€4) includes all activities for children.”

Construction began in 1861 and was a difficult engineering task, as the railroad is located in a mountainous region (western part of the Banat Mountains). The 33.4 km railway line has no less than 14 tunnels with a total length of 2.1 km and nine (9) viaducts.

The route starts in Oravița and then climbs the plateau of the Semenic Mountains on a route where no other road exists.

And it works… however

(8 October 2023)

A typical “cable laying” in Romania, common in many cities. Fiber optics for every house and apartment, laid quickly and super cheap.

And it never fails … Fiber optic cable for internet and cable TV (example: 1,000 MBit download, 800 MBit upload, no volume limit, incl. cable TV with, among other things, also German channels and many live football matches from the European football leagues (also Bundesliga, Spanish league and also Saudi league), incl. fiber optic router: approx. 13.50 euro per month.

We also admire the technicians, who not only install a new fiber optic connection in 2-3 days, but also maintain and service and do an overview. Thank you for that!

Waking up early was worth it. The boat tour at sunrise was WOW.

Lazy day in the campground today, a bit of laundry, more tomorrow. A few pics of the lovely Danube Delta, would have had a lot more. Hard to believe that 25km away there were drone attacks on a Ukrainian port last week. But I feel very safe here.

“Romania Day 16, we drive the 90 km through the Transfăgărășan Pass, which is only open four months of the year – the rest of the year, the high road is closed due to the long winter. There are many media talking and writing about the “most beautiful” pass road. The unique thing about it is that you can see bears in the wild. The pass road was built in only 4 and a half years and the highest point is 2042 meters high.

By order of the then head of state Nicolae Ceausescu (dictator), the high road was to serve a military purpose, due to the tense relations with the then Soviet Union after the Prague Spring events, but also a tourist purpose. The road link over the high mountains was intended to facilitate the rapid movement of troops. After four and a half years of construction, the road was opened on September 20, 1974.”

(5 October 2023)

We are starting at the end, but at the outset we would like to thank the Zitzmann family, who not only allowed us to use the photos from the trip (late September 2023), but also to take the experiences. Thank you

“We drive the Transalpina, but after a few hours we realize that we miss the beautiful part. Google talks about closures, missing crash barriers and the fact that the road was never finished…well, we let it get to that, we turn around, we turn around (the Transalpina is somehow split in two) 100 mushroom hunters pull 1000 kilograms of mushrooms out of the forest, in big vats we know from picking grapes. The quantities are unbelievable.

We find a great place to sleep, you are only allowed on the road from 8am to 6pm…whatever, we stay anyway, we don’t drive. In Romania it doesn’t seem to matter, the locals are driving around after 6 p.m., digging for stones etc. In the morning we see a flock of sheep next to us, spend a lot of time in the beautiful mountain area, and in the afternoon we finally get to the castle in Hunedoara to visit it.”

The Fortress of Brasov

The Fortress of Brasov (in German Kronstadt) is a fortification built in the 15th century on Straja Hill (Castle Hill) to repel enemy attacks.

https://kronstadt-erleben.de | https://discover-brasov.com

Throughout its history, it has been attacked and rebuilt again and again, and was even an important defensive point during the First World War. Originally, there was only the fortress tower. The outer fortress was built between 1630-1631. The horseshoe-shaped central tower has three floors and has served several purposes over the centuries: it was used as a storehouse, a prison for Turkish prisoners in the 18th century and a fortress.

Later, during the plague, a special ward was set up for the sick.

Peles Castle is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the town of Sinaia.

It was built between 1873 and 1883 for King Carol I of Romania and seized by the communist regime in 1947. After the Romanian Revolution in 1989, Peles was transferred back to the former King Michael, who was living in exile in Switzerland.

The oriel windows and semicircular walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the king’s residence. Seven terraces surround the castle. Some of the 160 rooms can be visited today. The castle museum houses weapons, sculptures, furniture and decorative objects from the 15th-19th centuries, as well as an orchestrion. The castle is particularly impressive for its magnificent carpentry.

Sibiu (in Romanian Sibiu, in Hungarian Nagyszeben and in Transylvanian Saxon Hermestatt) is a town in the geographical region of Transylvania and was/is one of the centers of the Transylvanian Saxons.

Probably in 1147, the first German settlers arrived in the area; they settled on the hill above the river Zibin, today’s Upper Town. The first documentary mention of the town dates back to 1191, under the name of praepositum Cibiniensem; a prepository was established. From 1223 the Latin name “Villa Hermanni” and from 1241 the German equivalent Hermannstorf.

In the 14th century, Hermannstadt developed into a commercial center of international importance. It was one of the most important towns in Transylvania – perhaps even the most important, as it was not only the center of trade, administration and the church, but also had the largest fortifications in the whole of Transylvania.
