Mogosoaia Castle | Near Bucharest ❤️

(29 June 2023)

In Ilfov County, just a few kilometers north-west of Bucharest (Romania’s capital), Mogosoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogosoaia, in the commune of Mogosoaia.

The castle contains a main courtyard and several buildings, such as the watchtower and the church of St. George near the courtyard.

Wallachian Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu had the castle built between 1698 and 1702 on the estate of the widow Mogos (from which the later name Mogosoaia derives) in the Brâncoveanu architectural style that bears his name.

In 1714, when Constantin Brâncoveanu and his entire family were executed in Constantinople, the Ottomans confiscated all the family possessions and turned the palace into an inn (a kind of inn).

In the following decades, the palace was conquered, destroyed and rebuilt several times, until in 1912 it came into the possession of George III Valentin Bibesco, married to the French writer Marthe Bibesco, who came from Romanian nobility. He gifted the property to his wife, and Marthe Bibesco subsequently had the castle largely restored.

County History Museum Brasov | Bastionul Tesatorilor

(25 June 2023)

The Museum of the History of the City and County of Brasov was established in 1950 and is located in the former Municipal House in the center of the Council Square or, to some extent, in the Weavers’ Bastion of Brasov (Kronstadt).

The Bastion, defended and maintained by the linen weavers guild, was built in two stages, between 1421 – 1436 and 1570 – 1573. In the first phase, the first two levels of the three battle galleries were built. The upper galleries, built between 1570 and 1573, were intended for small caliber weapons, which could be fired through narrow circular firing shafts along the entire length of the galleries. Two watchtowers were built for the guards, who kept watch over the town both from a military point of view and from the point of view of observing possible fires.

After its restoration, the Weavers’ Bastion was turned into a museum.

In the woods adjacent to the castle is a dinosaur park with many life-size exhibits. A perfect place for a family outing.

Boating through Zaga Zaga Land

(21 June 2023)

About 90 km from Galati, just behind Tecuci, in Vrancea county, Zaga Zaga resort is located in the Siret Delta.

A private waterfront cottage to relax in, fishing right on your doorstep, frolicking among the trees in the climbing garden, lounging by the pool or attending an outdoor concert… all this and much, much more is possible here for young and old.

We decided to take a boat tour (in a pedal boat). A good hour and a half over the lakes and through many canals, in beautiful nature. We enjoy the peace and quiet and see and photograph birds, which are as comfortable here as we are. A great place to relax… we will be back, soon …

Sighișoara – beautiful and rich in history | Part 2 / 2

(19 June 2023)

It takes many hours, if not days, to explore the town of Sighisoara (Sighisoara in German) in Mureș county.

There’s a lot of cobblestones and sometimes you get the impression that you’re not in Romania at all, but rather in an old town in Saxony … say, Meissen or something similar.

Sighișoara was founded in the second half of the 12th century by German immigrants, the Transylvanian Saxons. In 1280 it was first mentioned in a document as “Castrum Sex”. In 1298 it was mentioned as “Schespurch” or “Schaesbrich”, and in 1337 with the Hungarian name “Seguzwar”. In 1435, the Romanian name “Sighișoara”, borrowed from Hungarian, appeared for the first time in writing.

The town has retained its multicultural character to the present day. Today, Sighișoara is officially trilingual again. Place-name signs and tourist information are written in Romanian, German and Hungarian. There are kindergartens where German is spoken, as well as a primary school and a secondary school (Sighișoara Mountain School) where German is offered as the language of instruction. The Bergschule offers the Abitur in German, which is also recognized by German universities. In addition, the town has several Protestant churches and a lively community life.

Holiday time | Parking in Romanian cities

(17 June 2023)

Many tourists arrive with their own car or rent a car at the airport and are … perhaps a bit overwhelmed by the parking situation in Romanian cities. So here are some tips and information.

Relaxed parking in Brăila Relaxed parking in Brăila .
The city of Brăila is located in south-eastern Romania and has about 150,000 inhabitants. In fact, there are always enough parking spaces even in the city center and … all parking spaces in the city of Brăila are free.

Neighboring city Galati … not so relaxed
The city of Galati is also in the south-east of Romania and is the neighboring city of Brăila, with about 300 000 inhabitants. In many parts of the city (the city center, but also in the outlying areas), parking is paid (Monday to Saturday, between 8am and 8pm every day). Payment can be made via a parking machine on site or by SMS (a Romanian phone number is required). IMPORTANT: On average, it takes a short time before you will find a fancy yellow or orange immobilizer on your front wheel unless you have redeemed your parking ticket. Depending on the time of day, 200 or 300 lei (approx. 40 or 60 euros) are then up for grabs.

Kronstadt (Brasov), take/plan time for your search.
In or near the center of Brasov, it’s not easy to find a parking space at almost any time of the day. There are few parking spaces and, due to many restrictions (one-way streets), it can take some time to find a parking space. You really shouldn’t rush here! There is a fee for parking (Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm) and you can pay via an on-site parking machine (usually only for an hour or two) or via an app (also 24 hours/day). And in Brasov there are paid parking spaces all over the city, so always look out for the appropriate signs.

Timisoara, European Capital of Culture 2023 … modernity
First of all, parking spaces in the city center are also charged, but here the search for “bad parking offenders” is done in a very modern way. With the help of a specially purchased and equipped camera car, which regularly checks the streets and squares, the parking ticket is issued in no time. The camera car drives through the streets and records all parked cars / license plate numbers, compares in real time whether a parking ticket has been redeemed and … we don’t know this, but we assume … immediately issues a fine to those who park “badly”.

Bucharest … speechless
Parking in Bucharest is easy, either in the hotel parking lot or 20 km outside the city Anyone who has ever been on the road in Bucharest by car will quickly notice … you need a lot of time, patience and also a certain calmness to the driving style, which is similar here to some Italian cities. In many parts of the city, downtown, shopping centers and more, traffic is usually quite slow (Navi: In 800 meters you have reached your destination. Estimated travel time: 48 minutes). Parking spaces are paid and can usually be paid on the spot, by SMS (Romanian phone number required) or by app. However, depending on the neighborhood (old town), it is very, very difficult or extremely expensive (300 lei (60 euro) for 24 hours) to find a parking space in a “private parking”. Our advice is therefore clear. Look for a hotel with free parking and walk or use a taxi / Uber or buses / metro. It’s worth it!

In the countryside and small towns
Here it is almost always very relaxed, Park, point and end However, please however always always look out for any signs (usually near sightseeing/trip destinations). There may also be a charge there.

More cities, experiences about parking in Romania are welcome as comments!

And by the way: RO Vignette … in order to be able to drive on highways in Romania, but also on country roads (so it is mandatory for any car) you need a vignette. The Vignette (RO Viniete) can be bought and paid online (German interface) one month in advance (so before your vacation). The costs are also controllable and ok. For a car they are 3 euro for 7 days, 7 euro for 30 days, 13 euro for 90 days and/or 28 euro for a whole year. Usually rental cars already have this vignette, but it never hurts to ask … it never hurts.

An interesting picture | But where is it?

(17 June 2023)

It’s not easy, and only those who really know the city and the street, or who have followed our Facebook posts over the past few days, can probably give the right answer.

But we help you a bit, it is one of these cities:
Brăila | Alba Iulia | Sibiu | Timișoara | Cluj-Napoca

Who knows?

Cluj-Napoca | A city that never sleeps

(16 June 2023)

Cluj-Napoca (in German Klausenburg, in Hungarian Kolozsvar) is (probably*) the second largest city in Romania and the capital of Cluj County in Transylvania.

With a population of around 400,000, Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of Transylvania. It is home to universities, a lively nightlife and many buildings dating back to the time of Hungarian and Saxon rule. Surrounding the main square, Union Square, is the Gothic Church of St Michael and an equestrian statue of the 15th-century King Matthew Corvinus. The baroque Banffy Palace is now a museum displaying Romanian art.

Cluj-Napoca has an international airport and is located in northwest Romania.

* It could also be Iași, Timișoara or Constanța. Exact figures are unfortunately not available.

Kerz Monastery | Transylvania

(16 June 2023 / Images: End of January 2023)

Carta Monastery (Kerz in German) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in the Făgăraș region of Transylvania, Romania. It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, between the cities of Sibiu and Făgăraș, and is now an evangelical Lutheran church.

The exact date of the foundation of Carta Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A document from Constance dated April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built and granted rights and privileges by its predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th-15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the founding year of the monastery as around 1202-1203.

Bran Castle | in German: Törzburg

(16 June 2023)

Bran Castle is located in the historical region of Transylvania, in the county of Brasov.

It was originally a military defensive fortress, built with a rectangular plan on a cliff. Over time, the fortress underwent numerous structural changes, including the south tower, built in 1622 according to the plans of Gabriel Bethlen, the rectangular east tower, and between 1883 and 1886 the roof was also covered with tiles for the first time.

…and said to be Count Dracula’s castle in Transylvania… and attracts 100,000 tourists every year.

Citadel and municipality of Siria | Arad county

(15 June 2023)

Siria (in Hungarian Vilagos, in German Hellburg) is a municipality in the county of Arad.

In the area of today’s municipality there was already a settlement called “Villa Siri” in 1169. Vilagosvar was mentioned in a document from 1326, referring to the Vilagos castle, nowadays the ruins of the Siria castle.

Part of Syria’s history is the story of the castle ruins from the 13th century. In 1444, the castle passed briefly into the possession of Johann Hunyadi, and in the second half of the 15th century it passed into the possession of Matthias Corvinus. For strategic reasons, the Habsburg army destroyed the fortress in 1784.

Today, the castle ruins are a popular excursion destination.

Sarmale … a magic and simply DEEEEEELICIOUS word

(15 June 2023)

Sarmalele are not made to the same recipe everywhere in Romania. Depending on the region and taste, they vary from one locality to another, and also in size.

Sarmalele contain meat that is wrapped with other ingredients in vine leaves or pickled cabbage. Salsals can also be meatless (vegetarian) or with vegetables. Here is a special recipe from Moldova with meat stuffing.

To 1 kg of minced meat (pork, beef, chicken or a mixture) add:
– 4 – 5 medium onions
– 100 grams of rice
– salt, pepper – 1 teaspoon each
– Marjoram and parsley – to taste
– Tomato broth (150 grams)
– 4 tablespoons of oil (in combination with the chicken)

If it is lean meat, a few tablespoons of breadcrumbs or corn flour can be added to bind the mixture better. Mix well and then wrap in vine or cabbage leaves, depending on preference.

Boil for about two (2) hours. To do this, place the sarm close together in a pot and pour water over them. When the liquid in which the sarm is boiling runs out, add hot water to compensate. Check after the first hour of boiling and then whenever you feel necessary.

The recipe matches the pictures. Thanks to “Mom” Postolache for the recipe and to her daughter for the work and pictures.

The amount of ingredients makes about 120 sarmale. They are usually eaten with sour cream (sour cream/cream) and chili peppers (hot peppers). Also, depending on the region, white bread and mamaliga (made from corn semolina, similar to Italian polenta) are served.

We wish you pofta bună (Bon appétit).

It is located in the Făgăraș Mountains, on the Transfăgărășan highway, between the Negoiu and Moldoveanu Mountains. And what looks like fog here is probably more likely clouds (thanks for the information, Mr. George Cus), simply because the lake is very high.

The road (Transfăgărășan) to the lake should be reopened soon (July 1, possibly sooner). Until then, however, Lake Balea can also be reached by cable car.

Istoric(e): Samuel von Brukenthal

(13 June 2023)

Samuel von Brukenthal (born 1721, died 1803) was one of Transylvania’s most important personalities.

He studied administrative sciences, history, philosophy and theology in Germany. His professional rise in administration began with his marriage to the daughter of the mayor of Hermannstadt (Sibiu). His professional duties took him to Vienna in 1753, where he met the famous Empress Maria Theresa, who became his supporter and friend. He spent many years at the Viennese court and was governor of Transylvania from 1777 to 1787. He was the only Transylvanian Saxon ever to rule the country.

https://brukenthal-palace-avrig.com/en/home/

He was influenced by the European Enlightenment ideas of the time. He was a passionate collector, interested in art, coins, books, minerals and plants. Under the influence of his stay in Vienna, he built his summer residence in Avrig on the model of the imperial palace of Schönbrunn!

For the Brukenthal Palace, master artist Mircea Codrea has made a copy of Brukenthal’s portrait of the same size as the original, which can be seen above the fireplace in the Orangery restaurant.

Brukenthal Palace is looking forward to your visit!

The oriel windows and semicircular walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the king’s residence. Seven terraces surround the castle. Some of the 160 rooms can be visited today. The castle museum houses weapons, sculptures, furniture and decorative objects from the 15th-19th centuries, as well as an orchestrion. (12 June 2023)

Just 18 km west of Sighetu Marmatiei is the “Merry Cemetery”, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the Maramureș region.

He wanted to create a cemetery, unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has an image carved on the top, representing a special moment in the life of the deceased. Underneath, short, humorous poems or rhyming texts describe the life of the person buried there.

Biserica Neagră | Black Church

(9 June 2023)

The Black Church (Biserica Neagra) is a landmark of Brasov.

It is located in the city center, in the immediate vicinity of the city market and the old town hall.

The church is a Gothic hall church, which was originally a Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. With the Reformation in Transylvania, which on the part of the Transylvanian-Saxon population was largely driven by the reformer and later Kronstadt priest Johannes Honterus, the Catholic patronage was abandoned. The Black Church bears its current name from a fire in the town in 1689.

(9 June 2023 / Imagini: Octombrie 2021)

Piatra Neamț (German: Kreuzburg an der Bistritz) is the capital of Neamț County and is located in northeastern Romania. Literally translated, Piatra Neamț means “Stein Deutsch” or “Deutschstein”, whereby the word Neamț is an obsolete Romanian word for “German”.

From the train station, a cable car (Telegondola) drives almost 2 km (2,000 meters) to the mountain station on Mount Cozla, at an altitude of 632 meters (632 meters). The trip takes just under 8 minutes and you can already enjoy the wonderful view of the city and the surrounding area.

Piatra Neamt was founded at the end of the 14th century as Piatra lui Crăciun and became a famous center of arts and crafts after the establishment of a royal court by Stefan the Great, Prince of Moldavia (1433-1504). The town has around 80 to 100 thousand inhabitants and is always worth a visit due to the historic Old Town area.
