Besides the “typical German” shopping possibilities such as Lidl, Penny, Kaufland, DM and many others, there are far more shopping possibilities in Romania than in D and A. The so-called “Groceries” in every village and almost on every street corner (comparable to the Edeka stores of 30 years ago) in the cities are open 7 days a week, many of them (especially in the cities) even 24/7.
Unlike in Germany and Austria, all supermarkets in Romania are open every day (including Sundays), generally from 7:00 to 22:00 or, in shopping centers, from 10:00 onwards. Before or during holidays, some supermarkets may even be open 7 days/24 hours (e.g. the Carrefour supermarket chain in France).
But, back to the pictures, there are daily markets (called Piata, comparable to German weekly markets, but seven times a week) all over the country, which also offer fresh products (mostly fruits and vegetables, bakery products, but also many other products) fresh from the region and neighboring or nearby countries (Turkey). One thing that makes Romania even more attractive for a vacation … walking every morning through the market and buying fresh food for a day. Where else can you do that in the German-speaking world!
On the subject of prices, as of this morning, the images are in LEI (RON). Divide that by 5 and you get an idea of how much the products cost in euros. Examples: green onions, spring onions, 2.50 lei/bushel = 50 cents, apples up to 4 lei/kg, about 80 cents. Strawberries are 15 lei (3 euro) / bowl and delicious… we couldn’t resist.
And please note: The offer / prices / pictures are from Galați, of course they vary depending on the season and region and therefore can be even higher or possibly lower.
