Mogoșoaia Castle, near Bucharest

(25 July 2022)

In Ilfov County, just a few kilometers north-west of Bucharest (Romania’s capital), Mogoșoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogoșoaia in Mogoșoaia. The castle contains a main courtyard and many buildings such as the watchtower and the church ′′Sf. Gheorghe′′ near the courtyard.

Wallachian Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu built the castle between 1698 and 1702 on the widow Mogoș (later named Mogoșoaia) in the Brâncoveanu style named after him.

In 1714, when Constantin Brâncoveanu was executed in Constantinople with his entire family, the Ottomans confiscated all the family possessions and turned the palace into a Han (a kind of inn). In the following decades, the castle was conquered, destroyed and rebuilt several times, until it was owned by George III in 1912 Valentin Bibesco married the French writer Marthe Bibesco, who was born into Romanian nobility. He gave the property to his wife, Marthe Bibesco then rebuilt the castle intensively.

The castle can be visited without entrance fee, it has a wonderful large park where you can / are allowed, for example, to have a picnic or just laze the day away. Inside the castle you pay a fee of approx. 10 lei (2,10 euro) for parking, restaurants, museums and much more… also an extended walk with the rest on a bench overlooking the lake… many things are possible and beautiful.

Attention… you should not take the camera with you or put it in your pocket !!! Pictures with your cell phone are no problem, but as a ′′camera owner′′ you are already vehemently advised at the entrance that for professional photography you have to pay a fee of 400 Lei (approx. EUR 80).

Iulia Hasdeu Castle, Prahova county

(20 July 2022)

Iulia Hasdeu Castle is located in the small town of Câmpina in Prahova County.

Iulia Hasdeu Castle was built by the historian and politician Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu as a small castle. Work on it began in 1893 after Hasdeu’s daughter, Iulia Hasdeu, died at the age of 19, an event that dramatically shocked Hasdeu’s life. He claimed that his late daughter offered the plans for the castle’s construction during seances. The building was completed in 1896.

Stories tell of the castle being deeply sinister. There are rooms specially designed for spiritual rituals, equipped with spirit seats. Many claim that Hasdeu (the father) did not build the castle at all to commemorate his daughter Iulia, but to worship Satan. Others say that they have seen Juliet’s ghost, dressed in white and adorned with daisies, still haunting the castle to this day.

Since 1994, Iulia Hașdeu Castle has housed the “B.P. Hașdeu” memorial museum, which displays furniture and personal belongings of the Hașdeu family, including photographs, original documents, manuscripts, reviews of Hasdeu and pictures by Nicolae Grigorescu and Sava Henția.

495 years of Băile Olănești

(20 July 2022)

The small spa town of Băile Olănești was mentioned for the first time on July 19, 1527 and is now 495 years old. Happy Birthday!

Băile Olănești is located in the county of Valcea, in the historical region of Ță Românești, in the southern part of the Căpățâna Mountains, part of the Transylvanian Alps. The district capital Râmnicu Vâlcea is located about 15 km southeast.

The curative properties of the springs above the village are known at the latest since 1760. In 1821, several noblemen from Muntenia fled to the village from the revolutionaries under Tudor Vladimirescu. In 1830, physician Karl Friedrich Siller first analyzed the composition of the healing waters, after which he started the spa operation with combined bathing and drinking cures.

Delicious Romanian cuisine

(14 July 2022)

Romanian cuisine is rich in traditional dishes, which can vary from region to region.

The most popular dishes in Romania include mititeii*, ciorba de burta** and mămăliguța***

** Ciorba de belly belongs to the category of soups and is common in Romania in many recipe variations. Its particularity is the acidification with lemon and the addition of a lot of garlic. Burta means belly, which is the belly (rumen / kuddel) of a ruminant (bovine).

*** Mămăliguța, also known as mămăligă, is the Romanian name for a dish made from corn flour.

The picture shows a traditional dish from the Bucovina region: Pastrav in a corn crust with mămăligă and garlic (in English: trout in a corn crust with mămăligă and garlic)

Region / Lake Trei Ape, Caras-Severin county

(13 July 2022)

In the heart of the Semenic Mountains there is a place full of marvelous landscapes, an oasis of peace and relaxation. It is the Trei Ape Resort in the village of the same name in Caras-Severin county, about 35 kilometers from the city of Resita. The resort is located right next to Lake Trei Ape, the highest lake in the Semenic massif.

The name Trei Ape, given to both the resort and the lake that formed in the area, comes from the three streams that flow down from the mountains. Grădiște and Semenic, which meet here to create the Timiș River.

The three-water resort is popular with winter sports enthusiasts, and that’s because there’s also a ski section. In addition, tourists who want to explore the surroundings can start off on well-marked trails to the Anina or Semenic mountains, but also to nearby tourist villages such as Gărâna or Brebu Nou. Those wishing to spend the night at the Trei Ape Lake can do so in several huts, country cottages, guesthouses and a hotel located in the tourist resort of the same name.

To reach the area, drive from Reșița on a 37-kilometer paved road through Secu, Văliug, Brebu Nou and Gărâna.

On a starry winter night.

The Black Church (Die Schwarze Kirche in German) is a Gothic hall church in the Transylvanian city of Brasov (Kronstadt in German). It was originally consecrated as the Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary. With the Reformation in Transylvania, which was largely driven from the Transylvanian-Saxon population by the reformer and later Kronstadt pastor Johannes Honterus, the Catholic patronage was abandoned. The Black Church took its present name after a fire in the town in 1689.

Romania’s haunted forest, Hoia Baciu

(11 July 2022)

Just outside Cluj-Napoca (in German: Klausenburg), in north-western Romania, lies the Hoia Baciu Forest, one of the most visited forests in the world, also known as Romania’s Bermuda Triangle. Why? Over the decades there have been hundreds of reports of paranormal activity, ranging from cell phone outages, sightings of balls of light and ghosts, to people and animals disappearing and returning years later.

Hoia Baciu Forest takes its name from a shepherd in the region who disappeared into the forest with his flock of sheep. Another story tells of a five-year-old girl who went into the forest and five years later came back wearing the same clothes and not looking a day older. Many stories are about a glade in which nothing grows and although scientists have examined the land and determined that all is well.

And whether you’re looking for the supernatural or just an interesting hike, this forest is a fascinating and unique place and definitely worth a visit.

Fortified Church of Biertan

(11 July 2022)

The church is located in the municipality of Biertan in Sibiu county in Transylvania. Biertan is one of the first German-Saxon settlements and was mentioned in a document in 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like any Saxon settlement, it is characterized by a string of villages around a central square, above which rises the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (Episcopal See of the Evangelical Church A.B.), which fostered the building of one of the largest farming communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania that is definitely worth a visit.

The Shoemakers’ Tower in Sighisoara (Schäßburg)

(7 July 2022)

The shoemakers’ tower, first mentioned in documents in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 after the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prism with unequal sides.

The jagged roof with two observation towers on the south and north sides gives it a distinctive appearance. The stone tablet with the oldest coat of arms of the town and the motto “Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (in translation: The name of the Lord is the strongest castle), which is kept in the History Museum in the town of Sighisoara (Schäßburg in German), comes from this tower.

Driving at night is not recommended for many rural roads in Romania! Sometimes the median is missing, sometimes the verge, pedestrians are usually dressed in dark clothes and it can happen that a cow is warming up on the road (usually in spring or fall) and patiently waits until the driver stops and takes the other lane passing by. There are also potholes to mention, these are certainly more frequent and larger than in Germany and you should pay sufficient attention to them if you are interested in continuing your journey

Hermannstadt (Sibiu) in Transylvania

(1 July 2022)

Sibiu (in Hungarian Nagyszeben and in Transylvanian-Saxon Hermestatt) is a town in the geographical region of Transylvania and was/is one of the centers of the Transylvanian Saxons.

The first German settlers probably arrived in the area in 1147; they settled on the hill above the Zibin River, today’s upper town. The first written mention of the town dates from 1191 as praepositum Cibiniensem; a priest was established. From 1223 the Latin name “Villa Hermanni” is documented and from 1241 the German equivalent Hermannstorf.

In the 14th century, Sibiu developed into a commercial center of international importance. It was one of the most important towns in Transylvania – perhaps even the most important, as it was not only a center of trade, administration and church, but also had the largest fortifications in the whole of Transylvania.
