Făgăraș – cathedral and fortress
(31 January 2021)
The town of Făgăraș lies on the road from Sibiu to Brasov. At the end of the 12th century, the castle was just a wooden fortress, which was enlarged into a stone fortress in the 14th century. The castle contains a museum which, like the castle, can be viewed and visited.
Right next to the fortress is the cathedral/church of St. John the Baptist.

Fish, fish, fish … in the Danube Delta
(29 January 2021)
Whether as a fish broth (a delicious Romanian fish soup) cooked over an open fire, grilled or fried as fish with caper sauce, garlic and butter or simply eaten whole and raw (picture pelican), the Danube Delta is rich in birds, mammals, insects, amphibians and fish. More than 130 species of fish inhabit the delta’s river arms and waters.

Pure nature in Piatra Craiului National Park
(27 January 2021)
Romania is one of the most biodiverse countries in Europe in terms of flora and fauna. The flora and fauna is pristine and diverse, and as well as bears (two-thirds of Europe’s bear population lives in the forests here), with a bit of luck you can also see wild boars, foxes and owls during the day. The experience of meeting local people or seeing the tracks of a wild boar leaving them on a tree, bear tracks in the grass, a young bear or small owls live, is unforgettable.
The photos were taken in the Piatra Craiului National Park (in German: Königstein, district of Brasov and Arges) by Mr. Udo Krauss, who made them available to us. Thank you for that. Mr. Krauss works as a tour guide and leads small groups on day or multi-day tours in this area (if interested: Mr. Krauss speaks German and can be contacted at carpatmountains@gmx.de).
Important information: please note that an “encounter” with a wild bear can be very dangerous. Never try to lure these animals (even at the side of the road from your car) and only undertake your forest walks with experienced tour guides.

Iasi – the cradle of Romanian culture
(8 January 2021)
Iași was the capital of Moldavia between 1564-1859, one of the two capitals of the United Principalities between 1859 and 1862 and the capital of the Kingdom of Romania between 1916-1918.
You should not miss the opportunity to come to Iasi, where “every stone speaks of the past” and a large number of historic buildings, monasteries, museums and memorials. You could say that Iași is a national museum of history and art.
Iași is probably the fourth largest city in Romania (after Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara). Information about inhabitants fluctuates between 350 Tds. and 800 thousand, depending on the source and the surrounding area or just the city.

Peles Castle
(5 January 2021)
is a former 19th-century royal palace built between 1873 and 1883 for King Carol I of Romania.
It is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the town of Sinaia, which lies on the road from Bucharest to Brasov, in a valley of the Bucegi Mountains.
Seven terraces surround the castle. Some of the 160 rooms can be visited, and the castle’s museum houses weapons, sculptures, furniture and decorative objects from the 15th-19th centuries, as well as an orchestrion. Above all, the castle impresses with its splendid woodwork.
