Piatra Neamț
(30 October 2020 / Images: August 2020)
Piatra Neamt is located in northeastern Romania, at the foot of the Eastern Carpathians. The earliest traces of a settlement date back to 12,000 BC, in the Mesolithic period. The town (today about 80,000 inhabitants) was founded in the late 14th century under the name Piatra lui Crăciun. After the establishment of a royal court by nachtefan the Great, prince of Moldavia (1433-1504), it developed into a renowned center of arts and crafts. The nearby town of Târgu Neamț was the center of a colony of German-speaking settlers in the Middle Ages. Hence the name, “Neamț” is an obsolete Romanian term for “German”. Find out more …
Take a closer look at a small volcano … there it is
(29 October 2020 / Images: January 2020)
The mud volcanoes (Romanian: Vulcanii Noroioși) are located in the municipality of Berca in the Buzău district. The 30 km² area was declared a nature reserve in 1924. The main attraction of the protected area are the small mud volcanoes, which are a few centimeters/meter high, i.e. cold volcanism. The volcanoes are created by gases rising from a depth of about 3,000 m through clay and layers containing water. The mud dries on the earth’s surface and forms volcano-like structures.

And believe it or not, it works perfectly
(21 October 2020)
Ok, sometimes it seems a bit bold how fiber optic cables are connected and “laid” here. But Romania has one of the best fiber and cellular networks in the world. Fiber-optic connections of 1,000 Mbit including cable TV can be installed in cities for about 55 lei (about €12) a month and within 3-4 days. Phone cards with 80 GByte (!) data volume and nationwide internet coverage (download from 75 to 100 MBit in 4G or 5G network, upload up to 20 MBit) are available for €5 per month (provider: DIGI). You can only dream of this in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
PS: The traffic light (second to last picture in the gallery) is in Bucharest, another sign of what can be possible.

Bucovina – Moldovan monasteries
(11 September 2020)
The Moldavian monasteries are located in Bucovina and were built in the 15th and 16th centuries in what was then the Princely Tower of Moldova. The monasteries are famous for their magnificent frescoes. Many of the buildings go back to Stephen the Great, who is believed to have founded a monastery for every battle he won. Eight are World Cultural Heritage sites. The special thing about Moldovan monasteries is their colorful painting, which is unique in Europe. The monks also wanted to bring the contents of the Holy Scriptures closer to the inferior people who could neither read nor write. And so they used the monastery’s interior walls, facades and protective walls to depict scenes and parables from the Bible in colorful drawings, paintings and frescoes. They are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.
