Rasnov Fortress / Castle | Brasov County

(31 August 2025)

The Rasnov Fortress (German: Rosenau Castle) is a historic monument and a landmark in Romania and … we begin with a question!

In fact, the renovation of the fortress was supposed to be completed this summer, but … unfortunately we have no / cannot find any information about it. Who has been there and can tell us (and our readers) more? That would be very, very kind

It is located in Rasnov (Rosenau), Brasov County, about 20 km from the city of Brasov (Kronstadt).

https://discover-brasov.com | https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de

The fortress was built as part of a defense system for the Transylvanian villages. The present medieval fortress was probably built between 1211 and 1225, during the rule of the Teutonic Knights in Burzenland.

Bears on the Transfăgărășan and in Romania !!!

(30 August 2025)

You will most often encounter them on the Transfagarasan road, but increasingly in many other regions of Romania as well… the brown bears.

First of all, our BIG REQUEST:
DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!!
DO NOT ATTRACT THE BEARS!!
DO NOT stop and, ABOVE ALL, NEVER GET OUT OF THE CAR!!

BEARS are wild animals of the forest, not “tourist attractions.” Please respect this when driving and when encountering one or more bears! Enjoy the moment, but stay in your car and simply continue driving slowly.
In Romania, especially in the Carpathians, there are about 8,000 to 12,000 wild brown bears, and unfortunately more and more are drawn to roads and towns because they receive food from drivers or travelers. As a result, they keep returning, often with their cubs, to the roadside.

We understand, it is a special experience… but bears can also be very dangerous, especially a mother bear with her cubs. Mothers know: when it comes to the kids, the fun ends quickly, and things can become very dangerous. So once again… PLEASE SHOW RESPONSIBILITY AND RESPECT for these animals.

Feeding or attracting bears destroys their natural way of life… for just a moment of entertainment. So please, let the bears be bears, do not feed them and also do not stop when you see one or more on the roadside. Standing still only signals to the bear that food is coming. And getting out of the car to see a bear up close should NEVER happen. Thank you!

And for those who truly want to see bears up close, there are bear-watching stations (for example, here in Covasna County > https://medveles.hu/en/programs/tourist-bear-watching) where you can observe them safely, together with experienced guides.

The route starts in Oravița and then ascends to the plateau of the Semenic Mountains massif on a path where no other road exists.

Tree & magnificent garden in Buzias | Timis County

(21 August 2025)

A plane tree, planted exactly 25 years before the birth of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (nicknamed Sissi) and now already 213 years old (again, the tree).

The tree stands in the city of Buzias in Timis County, in the magnificent garden with a round wooden pavilion, whose construction was commissioned in 1875 by Emperor Franz Joseph for Empress Sissi.

A place with history, a lot of history, and we would love to know what this tree has seen in its lifetime and especially whom it has met

At the Airport | Buzias | Timis County

(21 August 2025)

A small town in Banat with its own airport… well, actually just with its own airplanes, which probably belong to the owner of the café/restaurant.

Buzias in Timis County is alive with the charm of the past: Emperor Franz Joseph commissioned the construction of a magnificent garden with a round wooden pavilion here for Empress Sissi in 1875 (more about this in a future post).

And for 20 years now, right next to it, there has been La Aeroport, the only airport/airplane restaurant in Romania. Both are definitely worth a visit.

The place is also perfect for children and families, as you can not only enjoy a coffee, ice cream, or more under the airplanes… but one airplane is also ready to take the little guests on a journey into the realm of fantasy ✈️

Cathedral of Curtea de Arges | Arges County

(20 August 2025)

Curtea de Arges is a Romanian town in Arges County. It is located on the right bank of the Arges River, which flows here through a valley of the Southern Carpathians.

It is one of the oldest towns in Romania. According to a tradition, it was founded in the 14th century by Prince Radu Negru, who named it the first capital of the Principality of Wallachia.

The Cathedral of Curtea de Arges (Manastirea Curtea de Arges, Catedrala Curtea de Arges) is one of the most famous buildings in Romania. It stands on the foundations of a monastery and is located about one and a half kilometers north of the city. It resembles a very large and ornate mausoleum and was built in Byzantine style with Moorish arabesques.

https://xn--willkommen-in-rumnien-m2b.de/ | https://xn--urlaub-in-rumnien-2qb.de/

The castle was built in the 11th century and is the landmark of the town of Rupea (Reps). High above the town on Kohalm Hill (578 meters), it can be seen from afar. It was first mentioned in documents in 1324, when the Saxons fought against the King of Hungary.

Summer at the Black Sea / Beach

(19 August 2025)

Photos from past Augusts. It was hot, very hot (between 32 and 38 degrees, sometimes even more), and the water was wonderfully refreshing.

Our destination was once again Vama Veche, the southernmost spot on Romania’s Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the Bulgarian border. Even now, the weather is gradually warming up again, and we’re already dreaming of our summer holiday at the Black Sea.

The Romanian seaside stretches for about 70 km and includes, besides Vama Veche, towns like Constanța, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Costinești, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia, and more. There are also long (and deserted) beaches in the Danube Delta region, between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe.

Vama Veche is mainly visited by a younger crowd, known as the party zone – Romania’s version of “Malle” – with around 3,000 to 4,000 visitors on weekends and loud music around the clock.

Salbagelu Nou | A Banat village through changing times

(17 August 2025)

Eichenthal (in Romanian: Sălbăgelu Nou) is located in Caraș-Severin County in the historical region of Banat. In 1894, the village was settled by German colonists from various German villages in Banat and the Banat Mountains, and it remained a German village until the 1970s.

From then on, the Germans migrated to the cities and to Germany. Afterwards, Ukrainians from Maramureș (a region in northern Romania) settled in the village. The small former Catholic church is now Ukrainian Orthodox. There are no Germans living in the village anymore. However, most of the oaks that gave the village its name still stand.

We thank Mr. Frank Schleßmann for sending these beautiful pictures (April 23/24, 2025) and the corresponding text/explanation.

Peles Castle | Wonderful views | Prahova County

(16 August 2025)

Peles Castle is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the city of Sinaia, Prahova County.

https://welcome-in-romania.com | https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de

It was built between 1873 and 1883 by order of King Carol I of Romania and was confiscated by the communist regime in 1947. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, Peles was returned to the former King Michael, who was living in exile in Switzerland.

The bay windows and half-timbered walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the king’s homeland. Seven terraces surround the castle. Part of the 160 rooms can now be visited. The castle museum houses weapons, sculptures, furniture, and decorative objects from the 15th–19th centuries, as well as an orchestrion. The castle is especially impressive for its magnificent woodwork.

Manastirea Hurezi (Horezu Monastery) | Valcea County

(14 August 2025)

Horezu Monastery (also known as Hurezi Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox nunnery located in the historical region of Valahia Mică in Vâlcea.

At the foot of the Căpățânii mountains, a massive mountain range of the Transylvanian Alps, on the territory of the Romani de Jos village, the monastery is located about three kilometers (airline) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian huhurezi) that live in the surrounding forests of the monastery probably gave the name of the place. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 until 1862 it was a human monastery. After the monks were transferred to your Bistrita, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.

On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The exterior of a smaller wall surrounded the entire estate of the monastery with its hermits. The second consists of three parts of different buildings and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is in the south part of a bell tower, armored with a solid wooden steel gate. The church of the monastery of Saints Emperors Constantine and Helen, built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape, is 32 meters long and was built between 1693 and 1697. Brâncoveanu, however, did not fulfill its purpose and, therefore, was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and wrapped in gold.

The square chapel with octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was erected in 1697. The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

Marienburg / Feldioara | Brasov County

(12 August 2025)

Marienburg from Feldioara (Romanian name of Marienburg) is a medieval castle of the Teutonic Order in the region of Transylvania in the district of Brașov.

https://xn--willkommen-in-rumnien-m2b.de/ | https://welcome-to-romania.com

The castle offers a wonderful view of the surrounding area and the mountains of Brașov (German name: Kronstadt), it is located at approx. 20 kilometers away from Brașov on the way to Sighișoara (in German: Schäßburg) and was built on a hill (almost 500 meters above sea level).

In 1211 King Andrew II called. from Hungary The Teutonic Knights in support of the Kumans in the country to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them many privileges, including immunity, the right to self-government, and the construction of stone fortresses to ensure the environment. In 1838, the city of Marienburg (Romanian name: Feldioara) was severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the ruins of the castle were renovated and largely rebuilt.

The Tower of the Cizmarilor in Sighisoara (Schäßburg) | Mures County

(12 August 2025)

The pavement tower, mentioned in documents in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 after the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prisms with uneven sides.

The robust roof, with two observation towers on the south and north sides, gives it a special look. From this tower comes the stone tablet with the oldest coat of arms of the city and the motto Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (translation: The name of the Lord is the most solid castle), which is preserved in the History Museum in the Clock Tower (in the German clock tower) in the city of Sighișoara (in German Schäßburg).

After World War II, the appearance of the tower underwent some changes. The windows were enlarged and the entrance was changed, and the exterior staircase was added in the following years.

Viscri City and Fortified Church | Brasov County

(12 August 2025)

The village of Viscri (in German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, in Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in Brașov County in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town/citadel of Rupea and southeast of the city of Sighișoara. Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had about 700 inhabitants, mainly Transylvanian Saxons and a Romanian village section. Viscri is notable for its fortified church and the typical Saxon village layout.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1185. At the northwest end of the village stands the fortified church.

In the 12th century, before the German settlers arrived, the Székelys (a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here. In the 13th century, it was expanded. After the first Turkish incursions, the church was fortified in the 14th century, and a defensive wall with towers was built.

Cheile Turzii – German: Thorenburger Klamm | Cluj County

(10 August 2025)

The Cheile Turzii (also called Thorenburger Schlucht in German) is a limestone gorge in the Trascau Mountains, on the eastern edge of the Western Carpathians in western Transylvania, Romania, not far from the city of Turda (Thorenburg).

The gorge, about two kilometers long, is traversed by the Hasdate stream, which has carved its way into the limestone here. On both sides, the gorge is bordered by steep walls about 300 meters high, in which several caves are found. As early as 1938, the gorge was declared a nature reserve due to the presence of over 1,000 plant species, some of them alpine. On an area of 176 hectares, about 70 species of birds, fish, amphibians, and some mammals such as foxes, weasels, martens, and wild boars live here.

Fortified churches in Transylvania | Pretai

(9 August 2025)

There are approximately 180 fortified churches in the Transylvania region; one of them is Pretai / Brateiu.

Only a few remains of the 14th‑century Gothic basilica survive today. The present church bears characteristics of the 15th century. The church interior was significantly altered by removing the southern row of pillars, raising the exterior walls, and installing a barrel vault. Particularly notable are the pillars between the north and central nave, which feature profiled cross‑sections and capitals with figurative depictions.

On the route through the Vale of the Great Kokel (Târnava Mare), a few kilometres east of Mediaș, the fortified church of Brateiu appears. It is located in the middle of the village at the village entrance.

Mici & Kürtőskalács… Delicious

Mediaș | Sibiu County | Early August 2024

(8 August 2025)

Mediaș (in German Mediasch, in Hungarian Medgyes, and in Saxon dialect Medwesch, Medves, or Meddesch) is a town (and municipality, explanation below) in Sibiu County, Transylvania.

The town of Mediaș also includes the village of Ighișu Nou (German: Sächsisch-Eibesdorf) and has a population of approximately 35,000 to 55,000 inhabitants. After Sibiu, Mediaș is the second-largest and most populous city in Sibiu County.

In Roman times, a fortress named “Media” was located on the present-day site of the city. Later, in the 12th to 13th centuries, Hungarian kings settled German and Western European colonists in this area, known as the Transylvanian Saxons.

At the Airport | Buzias | Timis County

(7 August 2025)

Sarmale… A magical word and only, DELICIOUS

(6 August 2025)

They are not prepared everywhere in Romania according to the same recipe. Depending on the region and taste of the individual, they also in size vary from one place to another.

Sarmas contains meat wrapped with other ingredients in vine leaves or sauerkraut. Sarmale can be without meat (vegetarian) with vegetables.

We present a special recipe from Moldova with meat filling.
For 1 kg of minced meat (pork, beef, chicken or a mixture) add:
– 4 – 5 medium onions
– 100 grams of rice
– salt, pepper – one teaspoon each
– Dill and parsley – to taste
– Tomato broth (150 grams)
– 4 tablespoons oil (in combination with chicken)

If the meat is lean, add a few tablespoons of breadcrumbs or corn flour to better tie the mixture. Mix the contents well and then wrap it in vine leaves or cabbage, according to your preferences.

Cook for about two (2) hours, placing the sarmale close to each other in a saucepan and adding water. When the liquid in which the sarmale boils is low, add hot water to compensate. Check after the first hour of cooking and then whenever you think it is necessary.

We thank “Mama” Postolache for the recipe and her daughter for work and images.

From the amount of ingredients, about 120 wires are produced. They are usually consumed with sour cream (cream / cream) and hot pepper (chili pepper). Also, depending on the region, white bread and polenta (from maize semolina, similar to Italian polenta) are added.

We wish you good appetite (Bon appetite)

Something special The Steam Locomotive Museum in Sibiu

(6 August 2025)

First of all, a beautiful and typically German word, “Dampflokomotivenmuseum” (in Romanian: Muzeul locomotivelor cu abur), but definitely a wonderful place here in Hermannstadt / Sibiu for all railway fans and those who want to become one.

The museum, inaugurated in 1994, includes about 40 locomotives, both standard gauge and narrow gauge, as well as snow plows and steam cranes. Seven of these locomotives are still operational today and can be admired and ridden during special trips or trains.

The Steam Locomotive Museum is located opposite the main train station in Sibiu (in German: Hermannstadt) and consists of the former roundhouse and the turntable of the railway line. The exhibited locomotives were built between 1885 and 1959 in Romania and other countries such as Germany (Henschel & Sohn, Borsig, Schwartzkopff) and the United States (Baldwin Locomotive Works).

Mr. Roland Schmid sent us these photos. Thank you, dear Roland, we didn’t know about it until now and it really is something special.

Biertan fortified church in winter

(4 August 2025)

This church/fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom) in Sibiu County, Transylvania.

Biertan is part of the first German-Saxon settlements and was officially mentioned in documents in 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like every Saxon settlement, it stands out with a row of houses surrounding a central square, above which rises the imposing fortified church. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon episcopate (bishopric of the Evangelical Church A.C.), which favored the development of one of the largest peasant communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, definitely worth a visit.

Moldovita Monastery | Suceava County

(4 August 2025)

Moldovita Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery located in the commune of Vatra Moldovitei, Suceava County. The monastery was built in 1532 by Petru Rares, the illegitimate son of Stephen III of Moldavia.

It is one of the eight monasteries in Northern Moldavia with frescoes on the exterior walls. Sister Maika, who has lived in the monastery for more than 50 years, says it is “the Holy Scripture in color.” The frescoes of Moldovita were painted by Toma of Suceava in 1537. They are filled with yellow accents and are well preserved. The predominantly yellow-blue paintings on the outside depict recurring themes in Christian Orthodox art.

We thank Mrs. Monika Opreapopa for sending and allowing us to use these pictures.

Putna Monastery | Suceava County

(4 August 2025)

Putna Monastery is located about 70 kilometers from the city of Suceava and is part of the so-called Moldavian monasteries, a group of Romanian Orthodox monasteries in southern Bukovina.

According to a legend told by the historian Ion Neculce, before founding the monastery, Stephen the Great shot an arrow from a mountain into the nearby Carpathian valley. The prince decided to build an altar at the spot where his arrow landed. Afterwards, Prince Stephen had the monastery built between 1466 and 1469.

The monastery was consecrated on September 3, 1470. At that time, Putna Monastery was a flourishing cultural center. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, clergy and chroniclers from the region were trained there.

We thank Mrs. Monika Opreapopa for sending and allowing us to use these pictures.

Saint Mina Monastery | Suceava County

(2 August 2025)

Near the village of Rosiori (about 15 km south of the city of Suceava) lies the Monastery of Saint Mina. The “Saint Mina” Monastery of Rosiori is an old-style Orthodox monks’ monastery, built in 1995.

Historical chronicles mention the existence of a hermitage dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel in the 19th century. During excavations around the monastery, the remains of monks buried here were found. Also discovered was a brick from 1864 bearing the name of a monk, Porphyr, who was buried next to the church wall.

Between 1934 and 1937, there was already a monastery here. A monk from Neamț Monastery, Protosinghel Gamaliil, established a new monastic settlement on the site of the ruins of the former hermitage.

We thank Mr. Daniel Sippel for sending these impressive pictures.

https://welcome-in-romania.com | https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de
