Peles Castle, located near the town of Sinaia in the Prahova Valley, deeply nestled in the Bucegi Mountains

It was built between 1873 and 1883 by order of King Carol I of Romania and was confiscated by the communist regime in 1947. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, Peles Castle was returned to the former King Michael, who was living in exile in Switzerland.

Today, tomorrow, and also on December 1st, a Christmas market will take place at Conacul Mocioni in Foeni (right on the border with Serbia and about 20 km southwest of Timisoara in Timis County).

In addition to the Christmas market, there will be a concert with Christmas carols (Colinde) and activities for children. Of course, everything is accompanied by local specialties from Banat and Serbia.

The Cheile Turzii (also called Thorenburger Schlucht in German) is a limestone gorge in the Trascau Mountains, on the eastern edge of the Western Carpathians in western Transylvania, Romania, not far from the city of Turda (Thorenburg).

The gorge, about two kilometers long, is traversed by the Hasdate stream, which has carved its way into the limestone here. On both sides, the gorge is bordered by steep walls about 300 meters high, in which several caves are found. As early as 1938, the gorge was declared a nature reserve due to the presence of over 1,000 plant species, some of them alpine. On an area of 176 hectares, about 70 species of birds, fish, amphibians, and some mammals such as foxes, weasels, martens, and wild boars live here.

Perfect for all stair climbers… Mount Toaca, at 1,904 meters, is the second highest peak in the Ceahlau Massif (Neamt County) in the northeast of Romania and… it can be “climbed” via a staircase

The number of steps is roughly equivalent to the number of steps leading to the viewing platform in Cologne Cathedral. We don’t have exact figures, but both routes are said to have around 500 steps. This is roughly equivalent to 31 floors in a high-rise building (information for anyone who wants to practice at home).

The Transalpina, or “The King’s Way” as the road is also called, has been fully open again since the beginning of June (like the Transfagarasan).

It connects the towns of Novaci in Gorj County and Sebes in Alba County. Over a length of 138 kilometers, this road crosses the Parang Mountains and reaches its highest point at the Urdele Pass.

Bistritz, Romanian Bistrita, Hungarian Beszterce, located in Bistrita-Nasaud County in the north of Transylvania, during Christmas time.

Just stroll through the city and enjoy the lights and/or visit the highest church tower in the city, that of the Evangelical Church. You can take the elevator to the top and have a wonderful view over the city and the Nösnerland*.

The gorges are located in the commune of Banita in Hunedoara County and run along high limestone walls.

They are about 300 meters long and have been deeply carved into the limestone by water. On calm summer days, they can be visited, but waterproof shoes are a must, as the path through the gorges also leads through water.

The height of the rock walls is about 10-15 meters and shows how the water eroded the stone. In many places, the rocks form a roof, which was created by horizontal erosion depending on the current over hundreds of years.

The Shoemakers’ Tower, first documented in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 after the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prism with unequal sides.

Its broken roof, with two observation turrets on the south and north sides, gives it a distinctive appearance. From this tower comes the stone tablet with the oldest coat of arms of the city and the motto “Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (translated: “The name of the Lord is the strongest fortress”), which is preserved in the History Museum in the Clock Tower (Turnul cu Ceas) in Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg).

After the Second World War, the tower’s appearance underwent some changes. The windows were widened and the entrance modified, and later the exterior staircase was added.

The Fagaras Mountains (Munții Făgăraș) have been among the best-known and most popular Romanian hiking areas since the end of the 19th century.

The ridge hike in the Fagaras Mountains, the highest mountain range of the Carpathians, is a spectacular adventure for hikers and nature lovers. Horezu Monastery (also known as Hurezi Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox nunnery located in the historical region of Valahia Mică in Vâlcea.

At the foot of the Căpățânii mountains, a massive mountain range of the Transylvanian Alps, on the territory of the Romani de Jos village, the monastery is located about three kilometers (airline) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian huhurezi) that live in the surrounding forests of the monastery probably gave the name of the place. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 until 1862 it was a human monastery. After the monks were transferred to your Bistrita, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.

On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The exterior of a smaller wall surrounded the entire estate of the monastery with its hermits. The second consists of three parts of different buildings and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is in the south part of a bell tower, armored with a solid wooden steel gate. The church of the monastery of Saints Emperors Constantine and Helen, built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape, is 32 meters long and was built between 1693 and 1697. Brâncoveanu, however, did not fulfill its purpose and, therefore, was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and wrapped in gold.

The square chapel with octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was erected in 1697. The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

Vultul Negru Palace is a secessionally built commercial arch in 1908 with a glass roof and cafes and boutiques inside.

The city of Oradea (German: Großwardein, Hungarian: Nagyvárad) is the capital of Bihor County and is located on the eastern edge of the Great Hungarian Plain on the Crisul Repede River (German: Schnelle Kreisch, Hungarian: Sebes-Körös).

The city center is 13 km from the Hungarian border.

This church/fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom) in Sibiu County, Transylvania.

Biertan is part of the first German-Saxon settlements and was officially mentioned in documents in 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like every Saxon settlement, it stands out with a row of houses surrounding a central square, above which rises the imposing fortified church. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon episcopate (bishopric of the Evangelical Church A.C.), which favored the development of one of the largest peasant communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, definitely worth a visit.

Not only in Maramureș and Transylvania but also in Bukovina, there is a “Mocănița” (pronounced: Mokaniza). The word Mocănița specifically refers to a narrow-gauge railway operated by steam locomotives.

Bukovina (also called Buchenland in German, Bucovina in Romanian) is a historical region northeast of the Carpathians at the crossroads of Central, Southeastern, and Eastern Europe.

In the center of Bucharest (northwest), in the Old Town / Lipscani area, lies the Macca-Villacrosse Passage.

This covered passage is a historical monument that connects Calea Victoriei and Lipscani Street through the passage’s exit on Eugeniu Carada Street.

The museum / mill of Mecles dates back to 1890 and consists of two mills which are moved by the power of the river Iza. The mill is located in the village of Sacel on the DJ186 road (a junction of the 17C) in Maramures County.

One of the two mills is of German origin, popularly known as ‘Fosalai’ and has been in operation since 1905. It is used to wash raw wool so that it can be processed further.

The fortified church of Tartlau, in the commune of Prejmer, Brasov County, has the most powerful ring wall of all the Saxon fortified churches in Transylvania. The oldest fortification ring is said to have been built before 1300 and was expanded at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century.

In its present form, the walls still stand 12 to 14 meters high and up to 5 meters thick at the base. Inside the fortress are over 270 refuge and storage chambers, arranged on up to four levels.

The Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Palace, in German Burg Eisenmarkt, in Romanian Castelul Corvinilor or Castelul Huniazilor, in Hungarian Vajdahunyadi var) is one of the most important non-religious buildings in Transylvania.

The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the southwestern part of the city of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The listed castle has many other names (Corvin Castle, Castle of the Corvins, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which refer to its location or its owners.

The Hungarian statesman and military leader John Hunyadi converted an existing fortification into the ancestral seat of the Hunyadi family after 1440. In the second construction phase, the castle was expanded from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, further major alterations were made under Prince Gabor Bethlen. The present-day castle therefore shows a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle was in Austrian possession from 1724 and has been in Romanian state ownership since 1918. In addition to being a tourist attraction, the castle has been and is used as a backdrop for numerous Romanian and international film productions. Today, the castle houses a museum.

The Targu Ocna salt mine is located in the spa town of Targu Ocna in Bacau County.

The Salina Targu Ocna is one of the oldest salt mines in Romania, documented as early as 1502 and listed as a salt extraction area since at least 1353.

Targu Ocna is the third largest salt mine and one of the oldest in Romania. It houses the Trotuș Mine at a depth of 240 m, the largest facility in the country for the treatment of respiratory diseases. There is also one of the few places of worship in Romania built in a salt mine, dedicated to Saint Varvara.

The salt mine is still used today for the extraction, processing, and marketing of salt in Romania and abroad. Annually, between 90,000 and 120,000 tons of salt are extracted.

The Moskovits Palace in the city of Oradea was a project by the architect Rimanoczy Kalman from 1905.

It is a two-story building with many plant motif ornaments and is one of the most beautiful examples of the Secession style (a variant of Art Nouveau, which developed mainly in Austria) of that time.

The palace is located on Republicii Boulevard in the city of Oradea, Bihor County, in the northwest of Romania.

Always a pleasure: The Turda Salt Mine is a true museum of the history of salt mining. It is located in the city of Turda, in Cluj County.

The temperature in the salt mine is constantly between 10-12 degrees. It is one of the oldest and most famous salt mines in Transylvania / Romania.

About 18 km west of Sighetu Marmatiei lies the “Merry Cemetery,” one of the most visited sights in the region / Maramures County.

The crosses, painted by local craftsmen, are done in bright and predominantly blue colors.

The idea for this cemetery originated in 1935 and comes from the wood sculptor Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a cemetery unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful way. Each cross features a carved image at the top, depicting a special moment in the life of the deceased. Below, humorous, short poems or rhymed texts describe the life of the person buried there.

To cross rivers, there are many regions in Transylvania that are still hanging bridges, suitable only for pedestrians.

They are mostly made of wood and remind a bit of Indiana Jones movies in terms of construction and condition / accessibility

The commune of Harman (German: Honigberg) is located in the historical region of Burzenland, about 12 kilometers northeast of the city of Brasov (Kronstadt).

The Hungarian King Andrew II granted Burzenland to the Teutonic Order in 1211, who settled there, built castles, brought German settlers to the land, and founded villages such as Honigberg. Romanian cuisine is rich in traditional dishes, which can vary from one region to another.

The most famous Romanian dishes include mititeii*, belly soup** and mămăliguța***

*Mititei or Mici is a national dish in Romania. These are rolls with grilled minced meat. Mititei were created in the Bucharest restaurant “Caru cu bere” and offered for the first time in 1902.

** Belly soup belongs to the category of soups and is common in Romania in many recipe variants. Its peculiarity is the acidification with lemon and the addition of a lot of garlic. Belly means belly, which is the belly (Romanian / kuddel) of a ruminant (cattle).

*** Mămăliguţa, also known as mămăligă, is the Romanian name for a preparation made from corn flour.

The castle is especially impressive for its magnificent woodwork.

We don’t know exactly if the “nice gentleman” in the picture is meant to represent the former voivode of Wallachia or if he’s just showcasing his stylish attire as a witness of the times.

He never actually lived here, but either way, the castle in Brasov County is definitely worth a visit

Pictures from the day before yesterday of the medieval hilltop fortress / Poenari Fortress. Today it is only partially preserved and is located in Arges County, in Greater Wallachia.

At the beginning of the 13th century, the rulers of Wallachia built the fortress. The legendary founder of Wallachia, Prince Rudolf Bessaraba the Black (Romanian: Radu Negru Vodă), is mentioned as the builder.

In the 15th century, Vlad III recognized the strategic importance of this hilltop fortress and ordered its repair and reinforcement using forced labor. He also made it one of his most important fortresses. In June 1462, Vlad III Drăculea fled from Tatars and Turks under Sultan Mehmed II to the fortress but managed to escape his enemies, who discovered his remote hideout and bombarded it from the neighboring mountain, through a war stratagem. Until 1529, the fortress remained a stronghold for Wallachian and Transylvanian princes.

Brateiu (also Bratei; German: Pretai, Transylvanian Saxon: Pretai or Pretua, Hungarian: Barathely) is a commune in Sibiu County.

The village was founded by German settlers and was first mentioned in 1283 as Mons Mariae (Marienberg). The village experienced its heyday towards the end of the 18th century. After complaints to Emperor Joseph II about the poor condition of the fortified church, which was in danger of collapsing — as it was built on marshy ground — were successful, the commune was expanded towards Schäßburg, the natural course of the Kokel river was diverted, and the surrounding marsh was drained.

Targu Mures, first mentioned in documents in 1300, is located on the Mures River (German: Mieresch, Hungarian: Maros) in the historical county* of Maros-Torda, on the route from Brasov to Cluj-Napoca.

Eroii Revolutiei (in German: Heroes of the Revolution) is a metro station in Bucharest on Line M2. It is meant to commemorate the people who lost their lives during the Romanian Revolution of 1989. The station was opened on January 24, 1986, and was completely redesigned in recent years (pictures).

It is located in Sector 4, south of the city center (Old Town, Lipscani), near Tineretului Park.

The Church of St. George is located at Strada Cavafii Vechi 6, at the “Kilometer 0” of Romania (regarding the distance indications to Bucharest) and east of the Old Town of Bucharest.

As early as 1574, the Frenchman Pierre Lescalopier, when traveling through Bucharest, testified that there were two beautiful and holy places in the city center, one of which was the St. George Church. Thus, the church is one of the oldest in the city.

It is a beautiful church in the middle of the city. In front of the church, you can find a bell with the German inscription: “Mich goss Johann Freisinger Glockengiesser in Wien 1856”.

Cluj-Napoca (German: Klausenburg, Hungarian: Kolozsvar) is (probably*) the second largest city in Romania and the capital of Cluj County in Transylvania.

Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania region. The city has universities, a vibrant nightlife, and many buildings from the times of Hungarian and Saxon rule. Around the main square, Piata Unirii, are the Gothic St. Michael’s Church and an equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus, who lived in the 15th century. The baroque Banffy Palace is now a museum displaying Romanian art.

Cluj-Napoca also has an international airport and is located in the northwest of Romania.

The Carturesti Carusel bookstore is much more than just a “bookstore.” It is located in the historic center of Bucharest and spans six (6) floors with a total area of 1,000 m².

A bistro on the top floor, a multimedia room in the basement, and a contemporary art gallery on the first floor invite you to explore, browse, linger, and shop.

The Humor Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox women’s monastery, located about 5 km north of the town of Gura Humorului, Suceava County (historical region of Bukovina / Bucovina).

Near the village of Rosiori (about 15 km south of the city of Suceava) lies the Monastery of Saint Mina. The “Saint Mina” Monastery of Rosiori is an old-style Orthodox monks’ monastery, built in 1995.

Historical chronicles mention the existence of a hermitage dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel in the 19th century. During excavations around the monastery, the remains of monks buried here were found. Also discovered was a brick from 1864 bearing the name of a monk, Porphyr, who was buried next to the church wall.

Between 1934 and 1937, there was already a monastery here. A monk from Neamț Monastery, Protosinghel Gamaliil, established a new monastic settlement on the site of the ruins of the former hermitage.

Cheile Manastirii is a nature reserve located in the west of Transylvania, in Alba County.

It is situated in the central-eastern part of the Trascau Mountains (highest peak: 1,250 meters), on the territory of the communes of Ramet (Valea Manastirii village) and Stremt (Fata Pietrii village).

Eichenthal (in Romanian: Sălbăgelu Nou) is located in Caraș-Severin County in the historical region of Banat. In 1894, the village was settled by German colonists from various German villages in Banat and the Banat Mountains, and it remained a German village until the 1970s.

From then on, the Germans migrated to the cities and to Germany. Afterwards, Ukrainians from Maramureș (a region in northern Romania) settled in the village. The small former Catholic church is now Ukrainian Orthodox. There are no Germans living in the village anymore. However, most of the oaks that gave the village its name still stand.

CIORBA DE ZARZAVAT, a delicious Romanian vegetable soup, where “lovage” is essential as it gives the dish its special flavor.

Ingredients:
1/2 onion
1 red bell pepper
3-4 carrots
A piece of celery
4 fresh tomatoes
1 small bowl of frozen peas (or a can)
250 ml of tomato purée
500 grams of stew meat
Vegetable broth, salt, pepper
A bit of lemon juice
Sour cream
Hot peppers
Lovage

Dice the onion, bell pepper, carrots, celery, and tomatoes and briefly sauté them. You can also add diced potatoes to taste.

Then cover the ingredients with water and let them simmer. Add the stew meat (cut into bite-sized pieces). Add enough water to cover, along with the peas and tomato purée. Stir occasionally and add water as needed.

Once the vegetables and meat are cooked, season the soup with vegetable broth (homemade or store-bought), salt, pepper, and a bit of lemon juice. The soup tastes best with sour cream, hot peppers, and freshly chopped lovage, added just before serving.

Bistritz (Romanian: Bistrița, Hungarian: Beszterce) is located in Bistrița‑Năsăud County, in the north of Transylvania.

Around 140 years ago, Timișoara / Temeswar already proved its uniqueness as a city in Europe.

On 12 November 1884, nearly 60 kilometers of streets in the city center of Timișoara were electrically illuminated with 731 lamps*. At that time, it was a record in Europe and the second place in the world after New York.

Cârța Monastery (German: Kerz) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in Transylvania, Romania.

It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, almost exactly halfway between the towns of Sibiu and Făgăraș, and today serves as an Evangelical Lutheran church.

The exact founding date of Cârța Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A Konstanz document dated 17 April 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built and endowed with rights and privileges by its predecessors. Cistercian documents collected and analysed by Leopold Janauschek from the 13th–15th centuries mention the monastery’s founding around 1202–1203.

On the way from Sibiu to Brașov lies the town of Făgăraș. At the end of the 12th century the town’s fortress was only a wooden fortification, which was expanded into a stone fortress in the 14th century.

The fortress houses a museum, which—like the fortress itself—can be visited. Directly next to the fortress is the cathedral / church Sfantul Ioan Botezatorul.

Siria (in Hungarian Világos, in German Hellburg) is a commune in Arad County.

On the territory of the current commune, there was already a settlement called “Villa Siri” in 1169. Documentarily, Világosvár was mentioned in 1326, referring to the Világos fortress, today the ruins of Siria fortress.

An important part of Siria’s history is the story of the fortress ruins from the 13th century. In 1444, the fortress briefly came into the possession of John Hunyadi, and in the second half of the 15th century, it passed to Matthias Corvinus. For strategic reasons, the Habsburg army destroyed the fortress in 1784.

Bistrița Gorges is located in Buila-Vânturarița National Park, Vâlcea county and flows along the Bistrița river with the same name.

The statue of the Dacian king Decebalus (ca. 86 to 106 AD) is 55 meters high and the largest / highest rock sculpture in Europe.

It is located on a rock formation in the Almaj Mountains on the banks of the Danube, close to the municipality of Dubova (Mehedinti district) in the Iron Gate Nature Park (Parcul Natural Portile de Fier).

It took 10 years, one million US dollars and 12 sculptors to create it … and it was not commissioned by the Dacian king himself, as was perhaps thought, but by a Romanian businessman and historian between 1994 and 2004.

Today is a lazy day at the campsite, a bit of laundry, tomorrow we move on. A few pictures from the enchanting Danube Delta, I could share many more. It’s almost hard to believe that just 25 km away, last week, there were drone attacks on a Ukrainian port. But we feel very safe here. “

“Romania, day 14, today is the day of the fortified churches in Transylvania, where there are and were many Saxon Germans. Fortified churches could shelter the inhabitants of entire villages during attacks. Each family received a small chamber. In one of the fortified churches, there were over 200 such chambers. There was also a school, weaving workshop, etc. inside, because the villages were often besieged for a long time… very interesting to see, at some fortified churches we were allowed to climb up to the tower on adventurous paths. Without any safety precautions, something that would be impossible in Austria. They just say: be careful, steep steps. When you stand under a bell supported by rotten wooden beams, you better not think about it. Another day with many new impressions. “

The village of Großpold, in Romanian Apoldu de Sus, is located in the county of Sibiu and is one of the three so-called Landler villages in Transylvania.

The Landler were forced to leave their Austrian homeland in the 18th century due to their Protestant faith and settled mainly in three villages near Sibiu. They have preserved their language and traditional costumes to this day. In Großpold, the typical architecture of the houses has largely been preserved. The two other Landler villages are Neppendorf, in Romanian Turnisor, today incorporated into Sibiu, and Großau, in Romanian Cristian.

The Holy Trinity Parish Church is a baroque Roman Catholic church in Sibiu ( Sibiu ).

It is located on the Great Square ( Large Market ) and forms a set of buildings with the former Jesuit residence. It is a wonderful church worth visiting!

Beautiful in every season, by day and by night … Hermannstadt / Sibiu / Nagyszeben in Transylvania.

The old town and the city’s fortification walls were built by Saxon settlers (the Transylvanian Saxons) in the 12th and 13th centuries and are still preserved today in many of their original features.

The Sulina Waterfront (promenade) is approximately five (5) km long. It starts at Mile 2 and, alongside the typical houses in blue and green, the path is interrupted by new constructions (mostly hotels and accommodations) until reaching the old center of the town.

Also, right in the town, you encounter horses that belong to no one and move freely as they please. There are few cars (as they must be brought to Sulina by ship), the clocks run slower here … and that’s a good thing!

To reach Sulina, it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes by a small boat (max. 12 people, up to 80 km/h!!) from Tulcea. This ride must be experienced at least once.

Timisoara, always beautiful, and if you are there, you should take the time to enjoy a delicious coffee or hot chocolate with our probably biggest fan (pictured)

He calls Take Five Coffee / Bazara, Strada Lucian Blaga 5, parallel to the street with the umbrellas, right in the center of Timisoara, his home and was happy to pose for a photo with us.

The small café, located in the heart of the city yet on the first quiet side street, is always worth a visit. And besides many delicious drinks, you might also be lucky enough to get a copy of our current Timisoara brochure there (as long as stocks last).
