Rupea Fortress (Repser Burg in German) is located near the town of Rupea (Reps in German), approximately 50 km from Brașov (Kronstadt), on the way to Târgu Mureș, and is one of the oldest fortresses on Romanian territory.

The fortress was built in the 11th century and is the landmark of the town of Rupea (Reps). Standing high above the town on Cohalm Hill, at an altitude of 578 metres, it can be seen from a long distance. It was first mentioned in documents in 1324, when the Saxons fought against the King of Hungary.

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County, in western Romania, is the oldest stone church in the country.

Built in its current form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple, it used materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. The church interior features 15th-century frescoes depicting Jesus in traditional Romanian attire.

Historians suggest the site once housed a Dacian temple for the god Zamolxis, later turned into a Roman temple for Mars. The church's origins trace back to the 4th century, making it the oldest church in Romania and Southeast Europe.

We thank Mr. Frank Schleßmann for sending these beautiful pictures (April 22, 2025).

Pictures from July of a previous year, from Alba Iulia (Alba County), showing the city centre and the fortress, located in the heart of Transylvania.

The city of Făgăraș lies on the route from Sibiu to Brașov. At the end of the 12th century, the town’s fortress was still only a wooden fortification; in the 14th century, it was expanded into a stone fortress.

The fortress houses a museum, which can be visited along with the fortification itself. The “Saint John the Baptist” Cathedral / Church is located directly next to the fortress.

Wonderful pictures taken by Mr Iercosan Marian at the end of September 2025.

The old town and the fortress walls were built by Saxon settlers (the Transylvanian Saxons) in the 12th and 13th centuries and are still preserved in many of their original parts today.

The Alba Carolina Citadel in Alba Iulia (Karlsburg) was built between 1715 and 1738 under the rule of Emperor Charles VI as a fortification with seven bastions.

It served the Habsburgs as a strategic defense point along the military border with the Ottoman Empire. Alba Iulia is located near the highway on the route to or from Sibiu (Hermannstadt). A visit is definitely worthwhile.

Hunedoara Castle (also known as Corvin Castle or Hunyadi Castle; Burg Eisenmarkt in German and Vajdahunyadi vár in Hungarian) is one of the most important secular buildings in Transylvania.

The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the south-western part of the city of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt), in western Romania.

The village of Saschiz (in Saxon: Keist, Kaest; in German: Keisd; in Hungarian: Szaszkezd) is part of the municipality of the same name in Mures County, Transylvania. High up on the mountain sits the fortress of the same name.

Saschiz is located on the way from Rupea to Sighisoara, about 15 km before Sighisoara.

The church / fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (German: Birthälm, Hungarian: Berethalom) in Sibiu County, Transylvania.

Biertan is part of the first German-Saxon settlements and was already mentioned in documents in 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like every Saxon settlement, it stands out for its row of houses arranged around a central square, above which the imposing fortified church rises. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon episcopate (bishop’s seat of the Evangelical Church A.B.), which favored the development of one of the largest rural communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, definitely worth a visit.

Where could you celebrate Halloween better than in Transylvania?... the birthplace of Vlad III Tepes Dracula... in Sighișoara / Schäßburg 😍😍

Plan your visit now and experience a very special night. Street performers, street food, lights and multimedia projections, guided tours, and much more!

Siria (in Hungarian Világos, in German Hellburg) is a commune in Arad County.

On the territory of the current commune, there was already a settlement called "Villa Siri" in 1169. Documentarily, Világosvár was mentioned in 1326, referring to the Világos fortress, today the ruins of Siria fortress.

An important part of Siria's history is the story of the fortress ruins from the 13th century. In 1444, the fortress briefly came into the possession of John Hunyadi, and in the second half of the 15th century, it passed to Matthias Corvinus. For strategic reasons, the Habsburg army destroyed the fortress in 1784.

Today, the fortress ruins are a popular excursion destination 🥰

An hour flies by and there is something for everyone: for the lover of history and stories, for the friend of Transylvania, the adventurer, for families with children who can explore the battlements and the way of life from long ago and so much more!

Our conclusion: The visit is 100% worth it

The village of Posmus was founded by German settlers. Mihaly Teleki (1634–1690), Chancellor of Transylvania, acquired a significant estate in this area around 1680. In the mid-18th century, several dilapidated wooden buildings stood on the site of today’s manor house.

Pal Teleki and Borbala Haller had the building rebuilt in the Baroque style. They commissioned the rectangular shape of the castle: on the sides were the warehouses, the stable, and the prison; at the back, the main building, rebuilt between 1750 and 1752; and at the front, the gate bastion, built around 1760. The gate bastion, which also housed a chapel, was later used as a guest house.

The village of Viscri (Deutsch-Weisskirch in German, Szászfehéregyháza in Hungarian) is located in Brașov County, in Transylvania.

It lies north-west of the town and fortress of Rupea (Reps in German) and south-east of the town of Sighișoara (Schäßburg in German). Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had approximately 700 inhabitants, mainly Transylvanian Saxons, as well as a Romanian section of the village. Viscri is characterised both by its fortified church and by its village structure, shaped by Saxon farmsteads.

Viscri also became known through King Charles III, who owns a house / estate here and regularly visits the village.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first documented in 1185. The fortified church stands at the north-western end of the village.

In the 12th century, before the arrival of the German settlers, the Székelys—a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group from eastern Transylvania—built a small Romanesque hall church here. It was expanded in the 13th century. Following the first Ottoman incursions, the church was fortified in the 14th century, and a defensive wall with defensive towers was built around it.

We would like to thank the photographer Brian Randall for permission to use these pictures.

Upstairs, at the highest point of the water shore, with a fantastic view over the Danube, is the church of St. The Precista from Galați.

The church is the oldest building in the city and was consecrated in September 1647, during the reign of Vasile Lupu. The architectural style of the church, which was also used as a defensive fortress, is typical of the architecture of the Romanian church from the 17th century.

Pictures from the day before yesterday of the medieval hilltop fortress / Poenari Fortress. Today it is only partially preserved and is located in Arges County, in Greater Wallachia.

At the beginning of the 13th century, the rulers of Wallachia built the fortress. The legendary founder of Wallachia, Prince Rudolf Bessaraba the Black (Romanian: Radu Negru Vodă), is mentioned as the builder.

In the 15th century, Vlad III recognized the strategic importance of this hilltop fortress and ordered its repair and reinforcement using forced labor. He also made it one of his most important fortresses. In June 1462, Vlad III Drăculea fled from Tatars and Turks under Sultan Mehmed II to the fortress but managed to escape his enemies, who discovered his remote hideout and bombarded it from the neighboring mountain, through a war stratagem. Until 1529, the fortress remained a stronghold for Wallachian and Transylvanian princes.

The old town and the fortress walls were built by Saxon settlers (the Transylvanian Saxons) during the 12th and 13th centuries and are still preserved today in much of their original form (pictured).

The Carpenters' Tower (Romanian: Turnul Dulgherilor) was built in the 14th century by the Saxon carpenters' guild. The tower was part of the city's third ring of fortifications and today is the left tower of the surviving defensive wall. It is located on Citadel Street (Harteneckgasse), named after the mayor Johann Sachs von Harteneck.

The Potters' Tower (Romanian: Turnul Olarilor) was built in the 15th century by the Saxon potters' guild. It was also part of the city's third ring of fortifications and stands to the right of the preserved defensive wall.

The castle, a listed historic monument, is also known under many other names (Corvin Castle, Castle of the Corvins, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which trace back to its location or owners.

The Hungarian statesman and military leader John Hunyadi transformed an existing fortification after 1440 into the ancestral seat of the Hunyadi family. During the second construction phase, starting in 1458, the castle was expanded under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, further significant modifications were made under Prince Gábor Bethlen. Today, the castle therefore displays a mix of architectural styles.

From 1724 the castle was in Austrian possession, and since 1918 it has belonged to the Romanian state. Aside from being a tourist attraction, the castle has been (and still is) used as a backdrop for numerous Romanian and international film productions. Today, it houses a museum.

The castle offers a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside and the mountains of Brașov (German name: Kronstadt), is located about 20 kilometres from Brașov on the road to Sighișoara (German: Schäßburg), and was built on an elevation, nearly 500 metres above sea level.

Râșnov Fortress (German: Rosenauer Burg) is a historic monument and landmark in Romania. It is located in Râșnov (Rosenau), Brașov County, approximately 20 km from Brașov (Kronstadt).

https://willkommen-in-rumänien.de/ | https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de/

The fortress was built as part of a defensive system for the Transylvanian villages. The present-day medieval fortress was probably built between 1211 and 1225, during the rule of the Teutonic Knights in the Burzenland region.

At present (August 2026), the fortress is still under renovation (pictures from early January 2022), and, as far as we know, access to the interior is not possible.

Rasnov is located about 20 km from Brasov (Kronstadt), on the way to the village / castle of Bran.

Rasnov is a small town with about 15 thousand inhabitants. inhabitants, a fortress and a dinosaur park. The castle was built in the 14th century on the limestone cliffs above the town. The Dinopark Rasnov is located only 200 meters from the back of the fortress (referring to the picture). So nothing stands in the way of a wonderful family day out.

The cenobitic monastery, dedicated to the patron saint "Holy Great Martyr Demetrius, the Myroblyte," is located just four kilometres south of the town centre of Sighisoara (Schässburg in German).

In earlier times, the Aurel Vlaicu neighbourhood was a village inhabited by Romanians near the medieval Saxon fortress. Over time, however, it became integrated into the outskirts of Sighisoara, to which it belongs today. The area has preserved its rural character and natural atmosphere, far away from the noise of the city. The wooded surroundings and the beauty of the landscape give it a picturesque and contemplative character, and the path leading up to the monastery gradually immerses you in the atmosphere of stillness and prayer that prevails in this place.

The listed castle has many other names (Corvinilor Castle, Castle of the Corvinians, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Iron Market Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which can be traced back to its location or its owners.

After 1440, the Hungarian statesman and military commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification converted into the ancestral castle of the Hunyadis. In the second construction phase, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, Prince Gábor Bethlen carried out further major alterations to the building. Today's castle therefore features a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle was in Austrian hands from 1724 and has been Romanian state property since 1918. As well as being an attraction for tourists, the castle is (and has been) used as a backdrop for a number of Romanian and international film productions. The castle now houses a museum.

The village of Saschiz (in Saxon: Keist, Kaest; in German: Keisd; in Hungarian: Szászkézd) is part of the municipality of the same name in Mures County, Transylvania.

The village and the fortress are located on the road from Rupea to Sighisoara, about 15 km before Schässburg / Sighisoara. The fortress is open from Friday to Sunday.

The Carpenters' Tower in Sibiu (German: Zimmermannsturm) was built in the 14th century by the Saxon carpenters' guild in Sibiu. The tower was part of the city's third fortification belt and is today the left tower of the preserved defensive and fortress wall. It is located on Citadel Street (Harteneckgasse, named after Mayor Johann Sachs von Harteneck).

The Potters' Tower (Romanian: Turnul Olarilor) was built in the 15th century by the Saxon potters' guild. It was also part of the city's third fortification belt and is located to the right of the preserved defensive and fortress wall.

Located high above the city and currently (and probably for the next few years) under renovation.

https://discover-brasov.com | https://kronstadt-erleben.de

It’s good that these old fortresses are being preserved (Rasnov Fortress is also currently being renovated), but less good that it usually takes 4–7 years. One might think it’s the same planners / contractors at work as on a certain well-known German train station in a city in Baden-Württemberg 🙈🙈😅

The fortified church of Tartlau, in the commune of Prejmer, Brasov County, has the most powerful ring wall of all the Saxon fortified churches in Transylvania. The oldest fortification ring is said to have been built before 1300 and was expanded at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century.

In its present form, the walls still stand 12 to 14 meters high and up to 5 meters thick at the base. Inside the fortress are over 270 refuge and storage chambers, arranged on up to four levels.

We thank Tom & Helga for these beautiful pictures from their Romania tour in September and October 2024. Many thanks 🥰

Marienburg Fortress in Feldioara (Feldioara being the Romanian name of the town Marienburg) is a medieval Teutonic Order fortress in the Transylvania region, Brasov County.

https://willkommen-in-rumänien.de | https://welcome-to-romania.com

The fortress offers a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside and the mountains of Brașov (German: Kronstadt). It is located about 20 km from Brasov on the way to Sighișoara (German: Schäßburg) and was built on a hill (just under 500 m above sea level).

In 1211, King Andrew II of Hungary invited the Teutonic Order to help defend against the Cumans in order to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them numerous privileges, including immunity, the right to self-administration, and the right to build stone fortresses to secure the area. In 1838, the town of Marienburg (Romanian: Feldioara) and the fortress were heavily damaged by an earthquake. From 2013 to 2017, restoration work and a largely complete reconstruction of the castle ruins were carried out.

We stayed there for four days; the tenant/owner is new and we can wholeheartedly recommend it. A very quiet location at Strada Tibles 7-9, only a few minutes' walk (about 10 min.) from the old town. Large rooms, a delicious breakfast (included), and—considering Kronstadt / Brasov—really very good room rates.

And... there is always a free parking space right in front of the hotel, despite the excellent central location. We must say it’s almost an insider tip 🥰 and also a great base for many trips around the region (Bran / Dracula, Dino Park Râșnov and Magic Park, as well as the fortress, Poiana Brașov, Marienburg (Feldioara) and much more) > https://kronstadt-erleben.de | https://discover-brasov.com

A beautiful shot of the fortified church / peasant fortress of Tartlau in Prejmer (Tartlau), Brasov County, in the Transylvania region.

The construction of the church in the center of the complex was probably started in 1218 by the Teutonic Order, which, however, was expelled from the region in 1225. Under the Cistercian monastery of Cârța, the construction was then continued. A special feature of the inventory is the late Gothic winged altar from the mid-15th century.

Untouched nature and plenty of history, traditions and customs, vibrant cities and quiet country life, time for hiking, the beach and the Black Sea, the Danube Delta, castles and fortresses, 180 fortified churches in Transylvania, diverse delicious specialties, Count Dracula and sooooo much more 🥰

The church / fortified church is located in the municipality of Biertan (Biertan in German, Berethalom in Hungarian) in the county of Sibiu in Transylvania.

Biertan is part of the first German-Saxon settlements and was already mentioned in documents in 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like every Saxon settlement, it stands out for its row of houses around a central square, above which rises the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon episcopate (episcopal see of the Evangelical Church of A.B.), which favored the construction of one of the largest farming communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, which is definitely worth a visit.

Rupea Fortress (German: Repser Burg) is located near the town of Rupea (German: Reps), about 50 km from Brasov (Kronstadt) – on the way to Targu Mures – and is one of the oldest castles on Romanian territory.

The fortress was built in the 11th century and is the landmark of the city of Rupea. Situated high above the town on the Kohalm Hill (578 meters), it can be seen from afar. It is first mentioned in documents in 1324, when the Saxons fought against the King of Hungary.

The fortress of Brasov (in German Kronstadt) is a fortification built in the 15th century on Straja Hill (Castle Hill) to repel enemy attacks.

https://kronstadt-erleben.de | https://discover-brasov.com

Throughout its history, it has been attacked and rebuilt time and again, and was even an important point of defense during the First World War. Originally, there was only the fortress tower. From 1630-1631 the outer fortress was built. The horseshoe-shaped central tower has three floors and served several purposes over the centuries: it was used as a storehouse, was a prison for Turkish prisoners in the 18th century, and was also used as a fortress.

In the 18th century it was a prison for Turkish prisoners and later, during the plague, a special ward was set up for the sick.

The Clock Tower is the landmark of Sighisoara (German name: Schäßburg) and... a wonderful viewing platform over the city of Sighisoara.

The tower (Turnul cu ceas) was built in the second half of the 14th century as a defensive structure for the main gate of the fortress and as the town council’s seat (until the end of 1656). Its current appearance dates from the end of the 17th century, when on April 30, 1676, a devastating fire that started in the lower town also spread to the tower. The Clock Tower, including the weather vane, has a total height of about 64 meters. The wall thickness on the ground floor is 2.4 meters, the masonry height is 39.5 meters (since 1804), and the tower has five floors. On the top floor, the tower is surrounded by an open wooden gallery, which was also used as a fire watch and lookout over the city’s surroundings.

The Shoemakers’ Tower, first documented in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 after the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prism with unequal sides.

Its broken roof, with two observation turrets on the south and north sides, gives it a distinctive appearance. From this tower comes the stone tablet with the oldest coat of arms of the city and the motto “Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (translated: “The name of the Lord is the strongest fortress”), which is preserved in the History Museum in the Clock Tower (Turnul cu Ceas) in Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg).

After the Second World War, the tower’s appearance underwent some changes. The windows were widened and the entrance modified, and later the exterior staircase was added.

Károlyi Castle is a neo-Gothic-Neo-Baroque palace complex in the town of Carei (Gross Karol in German, Nagykároly in Hungarian) in Satu Mare County in northwestern Romania. It was once the ancestral seat of the Hungarian noble family Károlyi von Nagykároly.

The castle with its gardens and museums is open to visitors and hosts several exhibitions.

Short history:
The origins of the castle are in a stone house built in 1482 by Láncz László Károlyi with the permission of King Matthias. Due to its strategic position, the fortress was part of the system of fortifications used against the Turks in the seventeenth century, after the expansion of the fortifications in 1661 and 1666.

This fortress was demolished by József Károlyi in 1794 to build a baroque castle designed by Joseph Bitthauser in its place. There were also several towers of different shapes and sizes. The inner courtyard was covered with a solid wood ceiling and thus transformed into a reception hall. A ditch was also built around the castle.

It was built between 1456 and 1526 in the late Gothic style, and in 1643 the slender, 71-meter-high tower was later added / erected.

Deva is the county seat of Hunedoara County, known for the Deva Fortress which sits high on the city’s hilltop, and is only a few kilometers from Corvin Castle / Hunedoara.

The Carpenters’ Tower in Hermannstadt / Sibiu (in Romanian: Turnul Dulgherilor) was built in the 14th century by the Saxon carpenters’ guild in Hermannstadt.

The tower was part of the city’s third fortress belt and today is the left tower of the still-preserved defensive and fortress wall. It is located on Citadel Street (Harteneckgasse, named after Mayor Johann Sachs von Harteneck).

The Potters’ Tower (in Romanian: Turnul Olarilor) was built in the 15th century by the Saxon potters’ guild. It was also part of the city’s third fortress belt and is located to the right of the preserved defensive and fortress wall.

A lot has happened in recent years, and Corvin has developed, in addition to the magnificent castle, into a history museum with many galleries.

Pictures from yesterday, June 16, 2025, and a short travel description from Mr. Michael Thiele about his tour through Transylvania / Romania, on which he is currently traveling. Many thanks for this 😊

"The wooden church 'Michael the Brave' stands next to the impressive 18th-century fortress – which was built on the orders of Prince Eugene in the Vauban style. As I was told during a private tour of the church, the predecessor of the wooden church was destroyed during the construction of the fortress."

Medias (in German Mediasch, in Hungarian Medgyes, and in Saxon Medwesch, Medves or Meddesch) is a city / municipality in Sibiu County in Transylvania. Hunedoara Castle ( also known as Hunedoara Castle ) is one of the most important non-ecclesiastical buildings in Transylvania.
The rock castle was built on the remains of a fortification from the 14th century. Built and located in the southwestern part of Hunedoara ( German name: Eisenmarkt ) in western Romania.

The listed castle bears many other names ( Corvin Castle, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle ) which can be traced to its location or that of its owners.

The statesman and leader of the Hungarian army, Johann Hunyadi, rebuilt an existing fortification after 1440 to become the ancestral castle of Hunyadis. In the second phase of construction, the castle was expanded in 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. In the 19th century, Prince Gabor Bethlen made other major changes to the building. Therefore, the current castle has a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle has been in Austria since 1724 and has been owned by the Romanian state since 1918. In addition to the attraction for tourists, the castle is ( and has been used as a background for a variety of Romanian and international film productions. The castle now houses a museum.

Iulia Hasdeu Castle is located in the small town of Câmpina in Prahova County.

The Iulia Hasdeu Castle was built by historian and politician Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu in the form of a small fortress. Construction began in 1893 after Hasdeu's daughter, Iulia Hasdeu, died at the age of 19, an event that deeply shattered Hasdeu's life. He claimed that his deceased daughter provided the plans for the castle's construction during spiritualism sessions. The building was completed in 1896.

Stories tell that the castle is profoundly eerie. There are rooms specifically designed for spiritualist rituals, complete with seating for spirits. Many claim that Hasdeu (the father) did not build the castle to honor his daughter Iulia but to worship Satan. Others report seeing Iulia's ghost, haunting the castle to this day, dressed in white and adorned with daisies.

Since 1994, the Iulia Hasdeu Castle has housed the "B.P. Hașdeu" Memorial Museum, which displays the furniture and personal belongings of the Hașdeu family, including photos, original documents, manuscripts, reviews by Hasdeu, and paintings by Nicolae Grigorescu and Sava Henția.

Later, the inhabitants added three defense towers and two inner courtyards to the original structure, which served as shelters. In the first courtyard, there is a 59-meter-deep well that still provides water today.

Hermannstadt (Sibiu in Romanian, Nagyszeben in Hungarian and Hermestatt in Sieburg-Saxon) is a city in the geographical region of Seiburg and was/is one of the centers of the seven citizens of Saxony.

Probably in 1147 the first German settlers arrived in the area; they settled on the hill above the Zibin River, today's Oberstadt. The first documented mention of the city dates back to 1191 under the name praepositum Cibiniensem; a fool appeared. From 1223 the Latin name is "Villa Hermannni" and from 1241 the German equivalent is Hermannstorf.

In the 14. During the century, Hermannstadt developed into a commercial center of international importance. It was one of the most important cities in Transylvania - perhaps even the most important, as it was not only the center of trade, administration and the church, but also the largest fortresses in all of Transylvania.

The Carpenters' Tower in Sibiu (on the left of the wall) was built in the 14th century by the Saxon carpenters' guild of Sibiu.

The tower was part of the city's third fortification belt, and is now the surviving tower on the left of the city wall and fortress. It is located on Zitadellenstraße (Harteneckgasse, named after the mayor Johann Sachs von Harteneck).

The Olarilor Tower (Olarilor's Tower in Romanian, to the right of the wall) was built in the 15th century by the Saxon potters' guild. It was also part of the city's third fortification belt and stands to the right of the preserved defensive wall and fortress.
