Curtea de Arges is a Romanian town in Arges County. It is located on the right bank of the Arges River, which flows here through a valley of the Southern Carpathians.

It is one of the oldest towns in Romania. According to a tradition, it was founded in the 14th century by Prince Radu Negru, who named it the first capital of the Principality of Wallachia.

The Cathedral of Curtea de Arges (Manastirea Curtea de Arges, Catedrala Curtea de Arges) is one of the most famous buildings in Romania. It stands on the foundations of a monastery and is located about one and a half kilometers north of the city. It resembles a very large and ornate mausoleum and was built in Byzantine style with Moorish arabesques.

Information: The Transalpina (also known as the neighboring road) has been open since June 1st, the Transfagarasan is expected to open at the end of June (more details will probably be known in mid-June) depending on the snow conditions.

Certainly one of the oldest monasteries in Romania is the Corbii de Piatra Monastery.

It is located in the village of Jgheaburi, Corbi commune, in Argeș County. It was built within a cave complex in 1512 during the reign of Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521).

The church of the monastery is carved into the rock (sandstone). Next to the church, also carved into the rock, is the monastery's dining hall, a chamber that, according to tradition, was used by Neagoe Basarab as an open-air courtroom for public trials. The monastery is about 400 meters from the center of Corbi, on the left bank of the Doamnei River. The rock church itself was excavated into a massive rock wall about 30 meters high and 14.5 meters long.

Moldoveanu Peak is the highest mountain in Romania, standing at 2,545 meters. It is located in Argeș County, within the Făgăraș Mountains in the Southern Carpathians.

The most popular routes to reach Moldoveanu are via trails coming from Podragu and Sâmbăta or through the Viștea Valley.

Lake Vidraru is an artificial reservoir in Romania, at the bottom of which, at great depth, lies an entire village.

It was created in 1965 by the construction of the Vidraru dam on the Argeș river. The dam is located in Argeș county, in the shadow of the Făgăraș Mountains.

Please note: Photos without snow are from previous dates. There is currently snow at Balea Lake and on the Transfăgărășan and the road is expected to be closed by mid/late June. However, Lake Balea can also be visited in winter by cable car.

Please note: The road is normally only passable from the end of June / beginning of July, depending on the snow conditions. However, Lake Balea can be visited all year round by cable car / gondola.

Always beautiful ... and soon to be visited / driven on again. There is still snow at the moment and the Transfagarasan road in the Fagaras Mountains is closed, as is the equally well-known Transalpina.

In the middle of one of the most beautiful mountainous regions of the Carpathians is Cabana ( cottage / mountain hotel ) Balea Lac, right next to the glacier lake of the same name.

Direct access via the legendary Transfagarasan Street ( winter via a cable car ) and located at an altitude of 2,034 meters, the hotel offers accommodation according to international standards.

Even though the road has been closed for almost a month and isn't expected to reopen until mid/late June 2024 ... it's an experience you only have to experience once 🥰 ...

And if you still want to see the road in winter, you can take the cable car (Telegondola) to visit Balea Lake and the ice hotel at any time.

The Mausoleum of Heroes from the municipality of Valea Mare-Pravat in the district of Arges is dedicated to the heroes of the National War of Integration between 1916 and 1918. The building houses the remains of over 2,300 Romanian soldiers in 31 crypts.

The mausoleum was built between 1928 and 1935 according to the plans of the architects Dumitru Ionescu-Berechet and Balosin by the master builder De Nicolo. Albesti limestone was mainly used for construction.

From 1980 to 1985, the mausoleum was expanded by building a parade terrace, imposing access stairs, museum rooms, a bas-relief 16 m long and 3.5 m high. The Albeşti stone teapot was also built, in which an eternal flame burns in the memory of the fallen heroes of Mateias.

Curtea de Arges Cathedral ( built in 1517 ) is a Romanian Orthodox cathedral in Curtea de Argeș, Argeș County in the central-eastern part of Romania.

It is located on the site of the Curtea de Arges monastery and is dedicated to the Ascension of Mary ( Assumption, Mother of God. The cathedral is dressed in light gray limestone, and the interior is brick, plastered and decorated with frescoes.
