Tismana is a small town in the Romanian region of Wallachia, in Gorj County, in the southwest of Romania.

This town is known for the Romanian Orthodox Tismana Monastery, the oldest still existing monastery in Wallachia.

As early as 1377, a monastery was built here by Prince Radu II, which was rebuilt in 1495 (after falling into ruin). The town (since 2004, Tismana has city status) developed in the 15th/16th century around the monastery and is today an important Romanian center of the wood industry.

The Transalpina or “The King’s Way,” as the road is also called, has been fully open again since the beginning of June (just like the Transfagarasan).

It connects the towns of Novaci in Gorj County and Sebes in Alba County. Over a length of 138 kilometers, this road crosses the Parang Mountains and reaches its highest point at the Urdele Pass.

Transalpina, also known as National Road 67C (Romanian for national road), is a major tourist road in Romania. It crosses a part of the Carpathian Mountains (also called the Transylvanian Alps), connects the Gorj district of Ţara Românească Mică with Alba County in Transylvania and reaches a height of up to 2,140 meters.
