Terrestrial Nun (Mantodea)

(19 August 2022)

A balmy evening in Bucharest invites you to linger outside your hotel. Another guest just says… “Look, something is crawling up there” and yes, we see it too… a praying mantis. Known from biology classes and movies and TV… but really in real life, never seen before.

Praying mantids or praying mantids (Mantodea) are an order of insects and belong to the flying insects (Pterygota). They are often referred to as mantids (Text: Wikipedia).

There is a small lake and a forest nearby and the animals also come (fly) at night at the hotel next door. A very pleasant experience for us and after a short photo shoot our model left…. Back to the next bush.

Plopi (in German Pappeln) is a village in the commune of Valea Ierii in Transylvania, Cluj county. The village takes its name from the poplar forests that surround it.

The mountain village is characterized by small, traditionally run farms and holiday homes. A beautiful monastery called the Monastery “Ascension of the Lord” is located on the mountain.

The mountain/landscape around Plopi invites you to hike, discover nature and also some wildlife species are native here. A lynx was seen only a short time ago, there are wolves, foxes, vipers, bears, a large number of species of birds of prey and many more.

On the roads (partly still very rocky and passable only with an off-road vehicle) a horse-drawn carriage is often used, you see herds of sheep and goats or suddenly find yourself in a “cow moo”.

The landscape is characterized by the fact that here people have built typical Romanian huts. The wooden construction blends beautifully with nature to this day.

St. Nicholas Church in Densuș

(10 August 2022)

The Church of St. Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara county in western Romania is the oldest stone church in the country. It was built in its present form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. There are 15th-century murals in the church, showing Jesus in traditional Romanian clothes.

According to Romanian historians, there was once a Dacian temple on the site of today’s church, which was built for the god Zamolxis. Later conquered by the Romans, they again built a temple there, which was dedicated to the god Mars. Given its later prehistory, the origins of this church in Densuș date back to the 4th century AD and is therefore the oldest church in Romania and south-eastern Europe.

(9 August 2022)

Bukovina – Moldovan monasteries

The monasteries are famous for their magnificent frescoes. Many of the buildings date back to Stephen the Great, who is said to have founded a monastery for every battle he won. Eight are world heritage sites.

What’s special about the Vltava monasteries is their colorful painting, which is unique in Europe. The monks wanted to bring the contents of the Holy Scriptures closer to the lower classes, who could neither read nor write. And so they used the monastery’s interior walls, facades and protective walls to depict scenes and parables from the Bible in colorful drawings, paintings and frescoes. They are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.

Bears on the Transfăgărășan

(8 August 2022)

The Transfăgărășan is open again from June 15, 2022 and so you can meet them again… the brown bears.

Our big request in advance:
DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!
DO NOT lure bears!!!
BEARS are wild forest animals and not “objects of experience”, please respect this when driving on this road!

There are still about 6,000 wild brown bears in Romania and more and more bears are being attracted to this road, as the bears unfortunately get food from some travelers and therefore return to the road again and again with their own offspring.

We understand that this is a special experience… but bears can also be dangerous and, more importantly, by feeding them, you are destroying the animals natural basis of life… for a moment of attraction.

Therefore, please let bears be… bears and show responsibility… don’t feed bears and please don’t stop if you see one or more bears on the side of the road. By doing so, you are tricking the bear into thinking it is getting food. Leaving your vehicle in such a situation to get a closer look at a bear should not happen anyway. Thanks!

Horseback riding lessons and excursions, Sibiu county

(1 August 2022)

Exactly one year ago (2021), in August we were here, it was hot, very hot (32-38 degrees, like now) and the water was wonderfully fresh. Our destination was again Vama Veche, the southernmost place on the Romanian Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the Bulgarian border.

The Romanian bathing coast stretches for about 70 km and, in addition to Vama Veche, includes places such as Constanța, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Constinești, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia and others. Vama Veche is visited primarily by a younger crowd, it’s the party mile, in other words the “Malle” of Romania with about 3 – 4,000 visitors on weekends and non-stop loud music (in 2021 clubs had 2:00 to 5:00 AM stationary, but that didn’t stop anyone. The party started at 2:00 a.m. on the beach and at 5:00 a.m. we continued where we stopped at 2:00 a.m. … sometimes again until 9 or 10 a.m. in the morning).
