In the pictures, you can see a “certain density of parked cars,” and the number of huts (an insider joke: are there flamingos there too? 😁) is unfortunately also increasing at an alarming rate. Well, people attract people… We neither want to nor can decide to what extent this is still a good thing here.

Also take a look at pictures 4 and 5—the so-called “before / after” effect 😅 Mobile phones make it possible, and suddenly you can find yourself at the most isolated place in the world 😁

But despite everything, it is and remains a beautiful region / road, which is definitely worth visiting, especially outside the holiday season.

The Museum of Traditional Folk Culture in Sibiu (in German, Hermannstadt) is one of the largest open-air museums in Romania.

Located just south of Sibiu (in German, Hermannstadt), the museum is in the “Dumbrava Sibiului” forest, along the road connecting Sibiu and Rășinari, about three (3) kilometers from the city.

It features installations of traditional, pre-industrial Romanian folk civilization. Houses, workshops, and building complexes are scattered around a lake, among the trees of Dumbrava Sibiului.

Putna Monastery is located about 70 kilometres from the city of Suceava and is part of the Moldavian monasteries, a group of Romanian Orthodox monasteries in southern Bukovina.

According to a legend recorded by the chronicler Ion Neculce, in 1466, before founding the monastery, Stephen the Great shot an arrow from a mountain peak into the nearby Carpathian valley. The prince decided to erect an altar where his arrow landed. Subsequently, Prince Stephen had the monastery built between 1466 and 1469.

On September 3, 1470, the monastery was consecrated. Putna Monastery was a flourishing cultural centre at that time. Clerics and chroniclers from the region were trained there between the 15th and 16th centuries.

Lake Ochiul Beiului (The Eye of the Bei) is located in the Cheile Nerei-Beusnița National Park in the southwest of Romania (County: Caras-Severin), near the border with Serbia and the villages of Deutsch-Orawitz (Oravita) and Steierdorf (to the west and east, respectively).

It has a depth of up to 3.6 meters and a diameter of about 15 meters. The fairytale-like green-blue water never freezes in winter, as the lake is constantly supplied with water from a spring.

The Cârța Monastery (German: Kerz) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in Transylvania, Romania.

It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, almost exactly halfway between the cities of Sibiu and Fagaras, and is today an Evangelical-Lutheran church.

The exact founding date of the Cârța Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A Constance charter dated April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, states vaguely that the monastery was founded, built, and endowed with rights and privileges by his predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th to 15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the founding year of the monastery as being around 1202–1203.

It is located about 220 kilometers west of Bucharest, in the Wallachian Plain, on the left bank of the Jiu (Shil) River. A Dacian settlement called Pelendava existed on the site of today’s city from around 400-350 BC. At the beginning of the 2nd century AD, the Romans set up a camp here. Remains of this Roman fort have been excavated in the Craiova urban area.

The city of Targu Mures (Hungarian: Marosvásárhely, German: Neumarkt am Mieresch), first documented in the year 1300, is located on the Mures River (German: Mieresch, Hungarian: Maros), on the route between Brasov and Cluj-Napoca.

Targu Mures was founded by the Székely people. The city was first mentioned in historical records in 1300 as Forum Siculorum. The history of the city, like that of all Transylvania, was shaped by the Kingdom of Hungary, the Principality of Transylvania, and from the end of the 17th century by the Habsburg Monarchy, later Hungary, and then Romania.

The village of Saschiz (in Saxon: Keist, Kaest; in German: Keisd; in Hungarian: Szaszkezd) is part of the municipality of the same name in Mures County, Transylvania. High up on the mountain sits the fortress of the same name.

Saschiz is located on the way from Rupea to Sighisoara, about 15 km before Sighisoara.

Motorhomes and “free camping” / wild camping | Many things are possible, but not everything is permitted, and some situations can also become very dangerous. Romania’s Carpathians are home to brown bears, and there are many national parks and protected areas. Many activities are prohibited and therefore not allowed 😅

If you nevertheless do not want to stay at an official campsite, please ask in the town or village where you wish to spend the night. There will certainly be opportunities to find a place on private property (with permission), in front of a guesthouse (with permission), or elsewhere. But please ask first… as local residents can warn you about possible dangers (such as bears).

Our online overview currently lists more than 300 campsites / motorhome pitches, but many details and pieces of information are still missing. Therefore… we would be grateful for any help in completing this overview.

Constanța (Konstanza in German) is not only home to the recently renovated “Old Casino”; it also offers an opera house, museums, the Great Mosque, the House with Lions, the marina, many cafés and restaurants, and the Black Sea.

Constanța has a history spanning more than 2,000 years, documented in the National Museum of History and Archaeology. The nearby Mosaic Museum displays Roman floor mosaics from the 4th century AD. The Carol I Mosque is also located nearby; its floor is covered with a huge Persian carpet, and its minaret rises high above the city.

The Transalpina (DN67C) is the highest road in Romania at 2,145 meters (Urdele Pass). The spectacular 148 km long mountain panorama road connects Novaci (Gorj County) with Sebes (Alba County) 😍

The Sphinx (in Romanian: Sfinxul) is a natural rock formation located in the Bucegi Mountains*, at an altitude of approximately 2,215 metres.

*The Bucegi Mountains lie south of the city of Brașov (Kronstadt), on the eastern edge of the Southern Carpathians in Romania. The Sphinx can be reached via the town of Bușteni in Prahova County / the Prahova Valley. However, the Sphinx itself is already located in Dâmbovița County.

The fortified church / village is part of the commune of Moșna and is also known by the outdated Romanian names Alma Săsească and Alma Între Vii, as well as by the Hungarian names Almád, Szászalmás, Német-Almás, and Almás.

The old town and the fortress walls were built by Saxon settlers (the Transylvanian Saxons) during the 12th and 13th centuries and are still preserved today in much of their original form (pictured).

The Carpenters’ Tower (Romanian: Turnul Dulgherilor) was built in the 14th century by the Saxon carpenters’ guild. The tower was part of the city’s third ring of fortifications and today is the left tower of the surviving defensive wall. It is located on Citadel Street (Harteneckgasse), named after the mayor Johann Sachs von Harteneck.

The Potters’ Tower (Romanian: Turnul Olarilor) was built in the 15th century by the Saxon potters’ guild. It was also part of the city’s third ring of fortifications and stands to the right of the preserved defensive wall.

The Muntele Mic Massif is a mountain group in the Țarcu–Godeanu Mountains, which are part of the Southern Carpathians.

Muntele Mic is popular with hikers in spring, summer, and autumn and is easily accessible by car. It is located between the Țarcu Mountains, the Godeanu Mountains, and the Retezat Mountains. The highest peak is Vârful Muntele Mic, with an elevation of 1,802 metres.

In winter, it is a small but popular ski resort in the Banat region, located 130 km from Timișoara. There are six (6) slopes with varying levels of difficulty: Borlova 1, Borlova 2, Vălsanu, Nordica, Isai, and Felix.

Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Fortress, in German Burg Eisenmarkt, in Romanian Castelul Corvinilor or Castelul Huniazilor, in Hungarian Vajdahunyadi vár) is one of the most important non‑ecclesiastical buildings in Transylvania.

The stone fortress was built on the remains of a 14th‑century fortification and is located in the southwestern part of the city of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The castle, a listed historic monument, is also known under many other names (Corvin Castle, Castle of the Corvins, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which trace back to its location or owners.

The Hungarian statesman and military leader John Hunyadi transformed an existing fortification after 1440 into the ancestral seat of the Hunyadi family. During the second construction phase, starting in 1458, the castle was expanded under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, further significant modifications were made under Prince Gábor Bethlen. Today, the castle therefore displays a mix of architectural styles.

From 1724 the castle was in Austrian possession, and since 1918 it has belonged to the Romanian state. Aside from being a tourist attraction, the castle has been (and still is) used as a backdrop for numerous Romanian and international film productions. Today, it houses a museum.

The Church of the Annunciation is an old Greek Catholic church (now Orthodox), built between 1926 and 1936 after the model of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Tismana is a small town in the Romanian region of Wallachia, in Gorj County, in the southwest of Romania.

This town is known for the Romanian Orthodox Tismana Monastery, the oldest still existing monastery in Wallachia.

As early as 1377, a monastery was built here by Prince Radu II, which was rebuilt in 1495 (after falling into ruin). The town (since 2004, Tismana has city status) developed in the 15th/16th century around the monastery and is today an important Romanian center of the wood industry.

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County, in western Romania, is the oldest stone church in the country.

In its present form, it was built in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple, using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. The church contains 15th-century wall paintings depicting Jesus in traditional Romanian clothing.

According to Romanian historians, a Dacian temple dedicated to the god Zamolxis once stood on the site of the present church. Later, after the Roman conquest, the Romans built another temple there, dedicated to the god Mars. Given its long history, the origins of the church in Densuș are said to date back to the 4th century AD, making it one of the oldest churches in Romania and southeastern Europe.

Near the village of Rosiori (about 15 km south of the city of Suceava) lies the Monastery of Saint Mina. The “Saint Mina” Monastery of Rosiori is an old-style Orthodox monks’ monastery, built in 1995.

Historical chronicles mention the existence of a hermitage dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel in the 19th century. During excavations around the monastery, the remains of monks buried here were found. Also discovered was a brick from 1864 bearing the name of a monk, Porphyr, who was buried next to the church wall.

Between 1934 and 1937, there was already a monastery here. A monk from Neamț Monastery, Protosinghel Gamaliil, established a new monastic settlement on the site of the ruins of the former hermitage.

In 2023, we followed the journey of “Schnuff” 😊 and his motorcyclist friends, which took us to many wonderful places in Romania.

Neamț Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery for monks located in the north-east of Romania, approximately 10 km west of Târgu Neamț in Neamț County, and more or less… right next to the Saint John Jacob of Neamț Church.

Râșnov Fortress (German: Rosenauer Burg) is a historic monument and landmark in Romania. It is located in Râșnov (Rosenau), Brașov County, approximately 20 km from Brașov (Kronstadt).

The fortress was built as part of a defensive system for the Transylvanian villages. The present-day medieval fortress was probably built between 1211 and 1225, during the rule of the Teutonic Knights in the Burzenland region.

At present (August 2026), the fortress is still under renovation (pictures from early January 2022), and, as far as we know, access to the interior is not possible.

The CEC Palace in Bucharest was built between 1897 and 1900.

It is located in the western part of Bucharest’s old centre (Old Town, Lipscani), on Calea Victoriei, opposite the National Museum of Romanian History, and is now the headquarters of CEC Bank. It should be noted that, unfortunately, public access to the building is no longer possible.

Bran Castle (German: Törzburg, Hungarian: Törcsvar) is located in the Transylvania region, Brasov County, in Romania.

In 2011, the largest statue of Jesus in Eastern Europe was erected on Mount Gordon in Harghita County, between the towns of Odorheiu Secuiesc and Praid.

The statue, called the Heart of Jesus, is approximately 22 meters tall, built from iron and stainless steel, and was funded through donations collected by the town hall of the village of Lupeni.

If you ever get to Bucharest, you really must visit it! Caru’ cu Bere is a famous brewery in Bucharest that opened in 1879.

The brewery is located in the eastern part of downtown Bucharest (Old Centre), between Lipscani and Stavropoleus streets.

The dining room on the ground floor is seven (7) meters high and decorated in Gothic style with columns, stucco ceilings, carved panelling and paintings. Access to the other floors is via a carved oak staircase.

The building was first constructed as a wooden structure in 1880. In 1910, the casino was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style according to the plans of architect Daniel Renard. It is regarded as Romania’s most famous Art Nouveau building and is the landmark of the city of Constanta.

The Black Church is one of the landmarks of the city of Brasov (German: Kronstadt) in Transylvania (German: Siebenbürgen).

Originally, it was consecrated as a Catholic church dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary. With the Reformation in Transylvania, which among the Transylvanian Saxon population was strongly influenced by the reformer and later parish priest of Brasov, Johannes Honterus, the Catholic patronage was abandoned. The church has borne the name “Black Church” since the great city fire of 1689.

The Administrative Palace (originally the Town Hall of the Free Royal City of Targu Mures, in Hungarian Közigazgatási Palota, originally Varoshaza) was built between 1905 and 1907 at the initiative of Mayor György Bernady as the seat of the city administration of Targu Mures.

It was the first building at the beginning of the 20th century to give the city center a new look and is distinguished by its Art Nouveau style.

Peles Castle is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the town of Sinaia, in Prahova County.

It was built between 1873 and 1883 at the request of King Carol I of Romania and was confiscated by the communist regime in 1947. After the Romanian Revolution in 1989, Peles was returned to the exiled former King Michael, who was living in Switzerland.

The bay windows and half-timbered walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the king’s homeland. The castle is surrounded by seven terraces. A part of the 160 rooms can now be visited. The castle museum houses weapons, sculptures, furniture, and decorative objects from the 15th to 19th centuries, as well as an orchestrion. The castle is particularly impressive for its magnificent woodwork.

The Oravița – Lisava – Anina railway line (in Caraș-Severin County) was inaugurated on 15 December 1863 as the first mountain railway on the present-day territory of Romania.

Construction began in 1861 and was a challenging engineering feat, as the railway runs through a mountainous region (the western part of the Banat Mountains). The 33.4 km railway line features no fewer than 14 tunnels with a total length of 2.1 km and nine (9) viaducts.

The route starts in Oravița and then ascends to the plateau of the Semenic Mountains massif on a path where no other road exists.

PS: The pictures are from Germany, the state of Baden-Württemberg, in the Black Forest, which is located near the border triangle of Germany, France, and Switzerland.

The church / fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom) in Sibiu County, Transylvania.

Biertan is part of the early German-Saxon settlements and was already mentioned in documents in 1398 (other sources say 1402).

Curtea de Arges is a Romanian town in Arges County. It is located on the right bank of the Arges River, which flows here through a valley of the Southern Carpathians.

She is one of the oldest towns in Romania. According to a tradition, it was founded in the 14th century by Prince Radu Negru, who named it the first capital of the Principality of Wallachia.

The Cathedral of Curtea de Arges (Manastirea Curtea de Arges, Catedrala Curtea de Arges) is one of the most famous buildings in Romania. It stands on the foundations of a monastery and is located about one and a half kilometers north of the city. It resembles a very large and ornate mausoleum and was built in Byzantine style with Moorish arabesques.

Rasnov is located about 20 km from Brasov (Kronstadt), on the way to the village / castle of Bran.

Rasnov is a small town with about 15 thousand inhabitants. inhabitants, a fortress and a dinosaur park. The castle was built in the 14th century on the limestone cliffs above the town. The Dinopark Rasnov is located only 200 meters from the back of the fortress (referring to the picture). So nothing stands in the way of a wonderful family day out.

Lugoj (Hungarian: Lugos, German: Lugosch) is a town in Timis County in the historical region of Banat. It consists of the town of Lugoj and the villages of Maguri and Tapia.

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, also known as the “Church with Two Towers,” is a Romanian Orthodox church located on Victory Square in Lugoj. The church was built between 1759 and 1766 in Baroque style. It is one of the most significant Baroque buildings in the Banat.

The village of Viscri (in German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, in Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in Brașov County in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town/citadel of Rupea and southeast of the city of Sighișoara. Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had about 700 inhabitants, mainly Transylvanian Saxons and a Romanian village section. Viscri is notable for its fortified church and the typical Saxon village layout.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1185. At the northwest end of the village stands the fortified church.

In the 12th century, before the German settlers arrived, the Székelys (a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here. In the 13th century, it was expanded. After the first Turkish incursions, the church was fortified in the 14th century, and a defensive wall with towers was built.

Siria (in Hungarian Világos, in German Hellburg) is a commune in Arad County.

On the territory of the current commune, there was already a settlement called “Villa Siri” in 1169. Documentarily, Világosvár was mentioned in 1326, referring to the Világos fortress, today the ruins of Siria fortress.

An important part of Siria’s history is the story of the fortress ruins from the 13th century. In 1444, the fortress briefly came into the possession of John Hunyadi, and in the second half of the 15th century, it passed to Matthias Corvinus. For strategic reasons, the Habsburg army destroyed the fortress in 1784.

The “Bridge of Lies” is one of the most famous landmarks of Sibiu. Manufactured in 1859* at Friedrichshütte in Hesse, it was the first cast-iron bridge in all of Romania (and the second in all of Europe).

There are many legends about its name, but since it was also the first bridge that did not stand on pillars, it was initially called the “lying bridge” (Liegebrücke)… and from there it wasn’t far to the name “Bridge of Lies”… 😅😊

The cenobitic monastery, dedicated to the patron saint “Holy Great Martyr Demetrius, the Myroblyte,” is located just four kilometres south of the town centre of Sighisoara (Schässburg in German).

The old town / city centre in current pictures from August 2026. Hermannstadt (Sibiu in Romanian, Nagyszeben in Hungarian, and Hermestatt in Transylvanian Saxon) is the county capital of Sibiu County in the historic region of Transylvania.

The first German settlers probably arrived in the area in 1147. The first documented mention of the town dates back to 1191. The Latin name “Villa Hermanni” is recorded from 1223, and the German equivalent Hermannstorf from 1241.

The city of Sfantu Gheorghe is the capital of Covasna County, located north and northeast of Brasov.

Măcin Mountains are a mountain range in the historical landscape of Dobrogea … and anyone traveling on the new bridge over the Danube between Braila and Galati will see it right in front of them.

As part of Dobrogea’s northern massif, it lies between the Danube and the Black Sea. The highest peak is called Varful Țutuiatul and is 467 meters high. Culmea Pricopanului (photo) is about 20 kilometers east of the city of Brăila.

The village of Botsch, called Batoș in Romanian, is located in Mureș County (Muresch in German). This commune, situated in the Reghin region, still has a small German community that regularly meets for church services. The renovation of the beautiful old village church will begin shortly. There is a winery in the village. Wine, as well as other products such as honey, vinegar, liqueur, and schnapps, can be purchased in Batoș.

First of all, admission costs 30 Lei (currently about €5.75), and the ticket office is located about 80 meters to the right of the entrance (around the corner to the left) 😅😁. But anyone visiting the city should definitely see the Palace of Culture (including the museum and the Hall of Mirrors)!

The Palace of Culture is located in the center of Targu Mures, Mures County. The building houses the Mures County Library, the Mures County Museum, and the Targu Mures State Philharmonic.

It was built between 1911 and 1914 in the Secession style* and consists of three sections: the main building, the right wing, and the left wing. Above the entrance hall is the Hall of Mirrors, located on the first floor of the building.

* The Vienna Secession (also known as the “Association of Austrian Visual Artists”) was an artistic movement closely related to Art Nouveau, founded in 1897 by a group of Austrian painters, graphic artists, sculptors, and architects including Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Otto Wagner, and Gustav Klimt.

The town of Sighisoara (Schässburg / Schäßburg in German, Segesvár in Hungarian) is one of the most important and most colourful towns in Mures County.

Bistritz (Romanian: Bistrita, Hungarian: Beszterce), located in Bistrita-Nasaud County in northern Transylvania, is the capital of the so-called Nösnerland.

The landmark of the city is the Evangelical Parish Church, which features the highest church tower in Romania (75 m); a service in German is held here every Sunday. The church was severely damaged during a major fire in 2008 and was subsequently restored through extensive renovation work. From the tower of the parish church, the top of which can be reached by lift, there is a fantastic view over the city and the surrounding mountains.

Pictures from Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg in German, Kolozsvar in Hungarian) from early August 2026. The city is (probably*) the second-largest city in Romania and the capital of Cluj County in Transylvania.

With approximately 400,000 to 450,000 inhabitants, Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania region. It has universities, a lively nightlife, and many buildings dating from the periods of Hungarian and Saxon rule. Around the main square, Piata Unirii, are the Gothic St. Michael’s Church and an equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus, who lived in the 15th century. The Baroque Banffy Palace is now a museum displaying Romanian art.

Beautiful pictures of the ‘Happy Cemetery’ and the museum / workshop of Sapanta (Maramures County), which we received today from Mr Alexander Laszlo. Thank you very much for this.🥰

The ‘Happy Cemetery’ is located about 18 kilometres west of Sighetu Marmatiei and is one of the most visited sights in the Maramures region.

The crosses, which were painted by local craftsmen, are vivid and predominantly blue in colour.

The idea for this cemetery was conceived in 1935 by the wood sculptor Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a cemetery, unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has a carved image in the upper part, depicting a special moment in the life of the deceased. Underneath, humorous, short poems or rhymed texts describe the life of the person buried there.

Certainly the largest cathedral in Romania and likely one of the largest in Europe built in this millennium. The cathedral is 127 meters high (Cologne Cathedral is 157 meters) and can accommodate 5,000 people across an interior area of 17,800 m².

The total area of the complex, located in the center of Bucharest and in direct proximity to the Parliament building (visible in the background on the left in some pictures), covers حوالي 36,900 m². Construction / planning of the cathedral / complex began in 2009, and full completion (including all additional buildings) will take place in the coming years.

“The Home of Dracula”, even though he never lived there and his “flesh-and-blood” prototype, Vlad III Țepeș Drăculea, probably was never there.

Pictures from the beginning of May 2026, taken on a wonderful Sunday. Cișmigiu Park is the largest and oldest public park in the center of Bucharest. The park covers an area of 17 hectares (170,000 m²).

The park dates back to the end of the 18th century, with the first works beginning in 1798. At that time, the construction of two fountains, known as “cișmele,” began, from which the name “Cișmigiu” is derived.

Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Castle, in German Burg Eisenmarkt, in Romanian Castelul Corvinilor or Castelul Huniazilor, in Hungarian Vajdahunyadi var) is one of the most important non-ecclesiastical buildings in Transylvania.

The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th century fortification and is located in the south-western part of the town of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

Marienburg from Feldioara (Romanian name of Marienburg) is a medieval castle of the Teutonic Order in the region of Transylvania in the district of Brașov.

The castle offers a wonderful view of the surrounding area and the mountains of Brașov (German name: Kronstadt), it is located at approx. 20 kilometers away from Brașov on the way to Sighișoara (in German: Schäßburg) and was built on a hill (almost 500 meters above sea level).

In 1211 King Andrew II called. from Hungary The Teutonic Knights in support of the Kumans in the country to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them many privileges, including immunity, the right to self-government, and the construction of stone fortresses to ensure the environment. In 1838, the city of Marienburg (Romanian name: Feldioara) was severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the ruins of the castle were renovated and largely rebuilt.

The tuberose* is a strongly scented bulbous plant from the agave subfamily. In Transylvania, the village of Hoghilag (in German Hockendorf) in Sibiu County is particularly famous as the “home of the tuberoses.” The cultivation of these fragrant flowers dates back to the Transylvanian Saxons.

Every year in August, during the flowering season, the Tuberose Festival takes place in Hoghilag. A market and various activities are held within the evangelical fortified church and its surroundings. Additionally, the residents open their gardens to offer visitors the chance to admire them.

* The tuberose (Agave amica, syn. Polianthes tuberosa) is a plant species from the agave subfamily (Agavoideae) and, despite the name, is actually part of the asparagus family. Originally from Mexico, it is known for its strongly and intensely scented whitish flowers, which are often used in perfumery. (Text: Wikipedia)

Mönchsdorf, known as Herina in Romanian, is located in Bistrita-Nasaud County in northern Transylvania. The Romanesque church was built in 1215 and has been a Protestant church since the Reformation.

The Roman Catholic Church „ Saints Peter and Paul ” from Brașov ( Brasov ) was founded in the second half of the 18th century. 19th century built according to the plans of the architect Karl Joseph Lamasch.

The church building is the only baroque building in the city, the altar is made of wood and gilded, the stained glass windows were built in Budapest, and the organ comes from Timisoara. The church houses statues of St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Anna and St. Anthony of Padua

Priest Ignatius Wagensei asked Empress Maria Theresa for support for the construction of this church, and construction began in the summer of 1776. In 1787 the church was consecrated by the bishop of Transylvania, Ignatie Batthyany.

Peles Castle was built between 1873 and 1883 at the initiative of Carol I, the first Romanian king.

It is located about 1.5 km northwest of the town of Sinaia in Prahova County. Just a few steps away (about 300 meters) lies its “little” brother, Pelisor Castle 🥰

Miercurea Ciuc (in Hungarian: Csíkszereda, in German: Szeklerburg) is the county seat of Harghita County. It is located in the Szeklerland, a predominantly Hungarian-speaking ethnocultural region in eastern Transylvania, in the valley of the Olt River.

In the Jigodin district of Miercurea Ciuc, the remains of three Dacian fortifications were found, belonging to the Dacian culture of the 1st century. Between 1876 and 1918, Csíkszereda was the seat of Csík County in the historical Szeklerland in the Kingdom of Hungary. After the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, it became part of the Kingdom of Romania.

Miercurea Ciuc became part of Hungary again between 1940 and 1944 as a result of the Second Vienna Award. In March 1945, it was returned to Romania, which was confirmed by the Paris Peace Treaties of 1947. Between 1952 and 1960, the city belonged to the Magyar Autonomous Region, which was later renamed the Mureș-Magyar Autonomous Region between 1960 and 1968. Since 1968, Miercurea Ciuc has been the county seat of Harghita County.

In June 2026, we spent a longer period travelling around Mures County and Targu Mures, and something we noticed more and more was that Targu Mures is a city with many, many trees and green spaces.

Almost every street has its own densely wooded avenue, while parks and public squares are lined with trees. Everywhere, including in the city centre, there is always space for a tree or, in most cases, several trees… and the city’s zoo is located in a large adjacent forest.

The city offers plenty of shade, and the many trees make the high temperatures more bearable. It is perfect for residents and visitors—and perhaps also for one or two urban planners—to see first-hand what “green” can achieve.

Historical documents confirm that the ancestors of today’s horse population in the Danube Delta arrived there 300 to 400 years ago, brought by the Tatars. They settled there, gradually adapting to the environment, and became increasingly feral.

In the northeastern Delta (Tulcea County), between the Chilia and Sulina branches, lies the village and forest of Letea (Romanian: Pădurea Letea), covering an area of over 5,000 hectares (50,000,000 m²). This is Europe’s northernmost subtropical forest, Romania’s oldest nature reserve, and home to these horses.

It is warm, many would even say hot, and somehow everything seems to move a little more slowly—not just for the people.

Anyone who wants to see the “relaxed” cats simply needs to take the alley with the umbrellas towards the Clock Tower. Apparently, both the left and right sides are particularly good places to sleep 🥰

The Maria Radna Pilgrimage Church in Lipova, known as Lippa in German, is located in the historic region of Banat. The basilica was built in the 18th century. Catholic believers from Banat (Germans, Hungarians, Slovaks, Bulgarians, and Czechs) regularly come here on pilgrimage. The altar contains the miraculous image, which remained unharmed when the previous church was destroyed by fire.

Alongside the Transalpina, the Transfagarasan is one of the most beautiful mountain roads in Romania (Sibiu County), usually open from mid-June (therefore also currently) until October.

The Transalpina (DN67C) is Romania’s highest road / mountain pass, reaching 2,145 metres (Urdele Pass). The spectacular 148 km long panoramic mountain road connects Novaci (Gorj County) with Sebes (Alba County).

Shortly after leaving Brasov in the direction of Sinaia (Bucharest), turn left towards the Sapte Scari (Seven Ladders) gorge.

It is a good hour’s walk to the gorge or the seven ladders, which is lined by a stream with clear, cold water and lots of nature. Even if you don’t enter the gorge via the ladders (there’s a charge, another three hours’ walk!), the hike there and back is definitely beautiful.

For the hike: sturdy footwear is highly recommended. In places, you walk over tree trunks, small wooden bridges and loose stones or you walk directly in the stream bed or on a stony path. You should definitely take something to drink with you.

The Shoemakers’ Tower, first mentioned in documents in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 after the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prism with unequal sides.

The jagged roof with two observation turrets on the south and north sides gives it a special appearance. From this tower comes the stone plaque with the city’s oldest coat of arms and the motto “Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (translated: The name of the Lord is the strongest fortress), which is kept in the History Museum in the Turnul cu Ceas (Clock Tower) in the city of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg).

After the Second World War, the appearance of the tower underwent some changes. The windows were widened and the entrance was altered, and the external staircase was added in later years.

Kleinschelken (in Romanian Seica Mica, in Hungarian Kissely) is a commune in Sibiu County, in the historic region of Transylvania. It consists of the main village of Kleinschelken and the village of Sorostin (in German Schorsten).

The fortified church of Kleinschelken is actually a Gothic complex dating from the 14th century, which was gradually developed into a fortified church by the Transylvanian Saxons. The church is impressive with its three-aisled pillar basilica, fortified bell tower, and distinctive well courtyard.

Around 1280, the first settlement was founded in the middle of the ridge between Kleinschelken and Kleinkopisch. In 1318, the name “Kleinschelken” was first mentioned in a document. In 1494, Kleinschelken became a market town, and in 1576 it was granted the right to exercise capital jurisdiction by the voivode of Transylvania.

A cool half-litre of beer for 10 lei (approx. €1.95), delicious food, German music (Schlager, folk songs, and a little “disco”), and lots and lots of good cheer… that was on offer yesterday evening / last night at the first Beer Festival in Kleinschelken / Șeica Mică, Sibiu County.

Many, many Transylvanian Saxons, as well as local residents, attended the festival. German seemed to be spoken more often than Romanian, and the inner courtyard of the fortified church proved to be the perfect venue 🥰
