At the beginning of the 17th century, further major redesigns were carried out under Prince Gabriel Bethlen. Today’s castle therefore exhibits a mixture of different architectural styles.

Fish, fish and fish – Traditional cuisine in the Danube Delta

(13 February 2026)

Besides the natural beauties, there is of course more in the Danube Delta, for example, plenty of fish.

There are many traditional dishes, and the preparation is not exactly like in a German kitchen But from personal experience, it is very, very tasty

Viscri Fortified Church | Brasov County

(12 February 2026)

The village of Viscri (German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in Brasov County in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town / fortress of Rupea (German: Reps) and southeast of the city of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg). Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had about 700 inhabitants, mainly Transylvanian Saxons plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterized by both its fortified church and the village structure shaped by Saxon farmsteads.

Romania | What you definitely should see

(12 February 2026)

A small selection of cities, places, and destinations that you should definitely visit at least once on a trip through Romania (Part 1 of 500 ).

Here: Bucharest, the capital of Romania

https://welcome-to-romania.com | https://willkommen-in-rumänien.de

INFO ROMANIA | Bears on the Transfagarasan and in Romania !!

(11 February 2026)

Both the Transalpina and the Transfagarasan are open … and especially here, but also in many other regions, you can meet them again … the brown bears.

First of all our BIG request:
DO NOT FEED THE BEARS !!!
DO NOT ATTRACT BEARS !!!

BEARS are wild animals of the forest and not “adventure objects”, please respect this on your trip and when encountering one or more bears! Enjoy yourself, but stay in the car and just drive on slowly.

In Romania there are about 8,000 to 10,000 brown bears living in the wild and more and more bears are drawn towards the roads and towns, as the bears unfortunately receive food from some travelers and therefore return to the roads again and again, even with their own offspring.

We understand, it is a special experience … but bears can also be dangerous and, above all, feeding them destroys their natural habitat and possibly even their lives … for a moment of attraction.

We therefore ask you to let the bears … be bears and show responsibility … Do not feed the bears and please do not stop when you see one or more bears at the roadside. This behavior will attract the bear because it thinks it will get food. Leaving the vehicle in such a situation to get a closer look at a bear should NEVER happen anyway. Thank you !

An article worth reading on dealing with bears:
https://www.trentino.com/…/verhaltensregeln-bei…/

It should be mentioned that feeding bears in Romania has now been made a punishable offense. Your vacation can quickly come to a premature end here!

INFO ROMANIA 2024 | (Weekly) markets in Romania | Pictures of a market in Galati

(11 February 2026)

In addition to the “typically German” shopping options such as Lidl, Penny, Kaufland, DM, and many more, there are far more ways to shop in Romania than in Germany and Austria.

So-called “Alimentare” in every village and on almost every corner in the cities (comparable to Edeka stores from 40 years ago) are open 7 days a week, many of them (mostly in the cities) even around the clock, 24 hours a day.

Unlike in Germany and Austria, all supermarkets in Romania are also open daily (including Sundays), usually from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, or from 10:00 AM in shopping centers. Before public holidays or during vacation periods, it can happen that some supermarkets even open 7 days / 24 hours (including the Carrefour supermarket chain from France).

But back to the pictures: throughout the country, there are regular markets (called Piata, comparable to German weekly markets, but in many cities like Galati still held seven times a week and even in every district), which offer fresh goods daily (mostly fruit and vegetables, baked goods, meat, but also many other products) fresh from the region and neighboring or nearby countries (Turkey). Something that makes Romania even more attractive for a holiday… strolling through the market every morning and buying fresh food for the day. Where else in the German-speaking world can you still do that!?

Regarding the prices, the pictures are from March 2023 in LEI (RON) (5 Lei / Ron still correspond to approx. 1 Euro today).

Please note: Prices have partially increased since then depending on the offer/season and, above all, vary greatly by region. The pictures shown are from Galati. The city is quietly located, directly on the Danube (800 meters wide and more) and at the beginning of the Danube Delta (on the border with Ukraine).

INFO ROMANIA | Parking in Romanian Cities

(11 February 2026)

Many travelers drive to Romania with their own car or rent one at the airport and … some may feel a bit overwhelmed by parking situations in certain cities. So here are a few tips.

**First of all, don’t copy the creative parking habits of some locals**. Cars can be **towed quickly** (especially in fire zones, in front of hospitals, intersections, pedestrian crossings, etc.), and recovering them requires **cash payment** – but first, you need to find out where your car was taken, which can be a long process .

# Stress-free parking in Brăila
Brăila, located in southeastern Romania, has about 150,000 residents. **Parking is always available and completely free, even in the city center**.

# The neighboring city, Galați … a bit more complicated
Galați, with around 300,000 residents, has **many paid parking zones** (not only downtown). Parking is charged **Monday-Saturday, 08:00-20:00**, and can be paid at parking meters or via SMS (Romanian phone number required). **IMPORTANT**: If you don’t pay, you may quickly find a **wheel clamp** . The unlocking fee is **200-300 Lei (40-60 Euros)** depending on the time of day.

# Brașov – parking requires patience
Finding a parking spot **near the center of Brașov is difficult at any time**. Many streets are one-way, and it takes time to locate an available space. **Parking is charged (Monday-Saturday, 08:00-20:00)** and can be paid at meters, via SMS (per hour, multiple SMS needed – Romanian number required), or via an app (24h tickets available). Paid parking applies citywide, so always check the signs.

# Timișoara, European Capital of Culture 2023 … going high-tech
Paid parking in the city center is monitored using a **special camera-equipped vehicle** that scans parked cars and checks payment records in real-time. We’re not sure how it works exactly, but … we suspect fines are issued automatically.

# Bucharest … no words
Parking in Bucharest means **either at the hotel or 20 km outside the city** . The **traffic is intense**, and the **driving style is reminiscent of Italian movies**. Most areas, including downtown, require **paid parking** (via meter, SMS – Romanian number needed, or app). Finding a spot in the **Old Town is extremely difficult**, and private parking can cost up to **300 Lei (60 Euros) for 24h**. **Our advice**: book a hotel with free parking and use taxis, Uber, or public transport instead. It’s worth it!

# Small towns & rural areas
Parking here is usually **free and easy** , but check signs near tourist attractions.

# Ignoring a parking fine?
Not a good idea! Most cities **clamp the front wheel** (yellow or orange). The release fee depends on the time of day. **Better pay for parking in advance** – it’s cheaper!

Any parking experiences in Romania? Share your comments!

# And a reminder: RO Vignette
Driving on **Romanian highways and national roads** requires a vignette (Rovinieta). Buy it online **up to a month before your trip**: [https://www.roviniete.ro/de/](https://www.roviniete.ro/de/). Prices:
– 3 Euros / 7 days
– 7 Euros / 30 days
– 13 Euros / 90 days
– 28 Euros / 1 year

Rental cars usually have it included, but double-check.

Safe travels & stress-free parking!

INFO ROMANIA | Camping | Glamping | Motorhome parking spots and more

(11 February 2026)

We continue to work on our new information section (sorted by regions in Romania) about camping, motorhome travel, and more.

https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de/en/uir/camping-in-romania-en/

Motorhomes and wild camping | Many things are possible, not everything is allowed, and some things can be quite dangerous. Romania’s Carpathian Mountains are home to brown bears, there are many national parks and protected areas, and many activities are forbidden However, if you don’t want to stay at an official campsite, please ask in the local area. There is usually a possibility to park on private property (with permission), in front of a guesthouse (with permission), or elsewhere. But please, always ask… local residents can also inform you about possible dangers (e.g., bears).

Our online list still lacks a lot of information, so we kindly ask for your help to complete this overview (in German, Romanian, and English).

You can submit new places for free directly on the site, and after a quick review, we will publish them online. Many thanks in advance to all the contributors

INFO ROMANIA | Traveling in / to Romania | Daytime Running Lights Requirement and More …!

(11 February 2026)

Please take note when driving to and in Romania. Since July 1, 2023, it is mandatory to use dipped headlights during the day, both in cities and outside of them (so, everywhere ).

Also, a vignette is required for almost all roads outside cities (highways and even national roads). The costs are low, and the vignette can be purchased at many gas stations or online (up to one month before your trip): https://www.roviniete.ro/de/

If you are traveling through Hungary on the highway, you will also need a vignette, which can be purchased online (same link as above). Additionally, the Austrian vignette can be purchased at https://asfinag.at or at gas stations in Germany / Hungary (and of course in Austria – but then it might be too late ). Always keep the receipt, as Austria may check both the vignette and proof of payment.

In Romania, the **blood alcohol limit for driving is 0.00‰** !!!

Speed limits in Romania:
– max. 50 km/h in cities
– max. 90 km/h on national roads (even if Google Maps suggests 100 km/h!!)
– max. 130 km/h on highways

A **fire extinguisher** (though sometimes overlooked for tourists) and **two warning triangles** are mandatory.

Even if other drivers (especially trucks!!!) exceed speed limits in towns, please follow them for your safety, your family’s, and others on the road – and to avoid fines.

Pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way at crosswalks (unless there is a traffic light). You must usually stop if you see a potential pedestrian about to cross.

At unguarded railway crossings, **you must stop** and check both directions for approaching trains. This is required by law and, more importantly, ensures your safety. The road over the tracks is often bumpy – maintain distance from the car in front and never start crossing while another vehicle is still on the tracks!

Safe travels! | Drum bun!

“Romania, Day 10 – Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. ❤️
Getting up early was worth it. The sunrise boat tour was WOW.
Today a lazy day at the campsite, doing a bit of laundry; tomorrow we move on. A few pictures of the enchanting Danube Delta — I have many more. Hard to believe that about 25 km away, drone attacks took place last week on a Ukrainian port. Still, we feel very safe here. ”

Thanks to Mrs. Daniela and Mr. Gerhard Zitzmann for the pictures and text.

Hermannstadt (Sibiu) | Bridge of lies

(9 February 2026)

The “Bridge of Lies” is one of the most famous landmarks of Sibiu. Manufactured in 1859* at the Friedrichshütte foundry in Hesse, it was the first cast-iron bridge in all of Romania (and the second in all of Europe).

There are many legends regarding the name, but since it was also the first bridge that did not stand on pillars, it was called the “lying bridge” (Liegebrücke) … and from there to the word “Bridge of Lies” (Lügenbrücke) it wasn’t a long way …

* Information: In 1859, Sibiu, as well as the Transylvania region, belonged to the Austrian Empire of that time (from 1867, the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary).

The “Merry Cemetery” of Sapanta

(9 February 2026)

Beautiful pictures of the ‘Happy Cemetery’ and the museum / workshop of Sapanta (Maramures County), which we received today from Mr Alexander Laszlo. Thank you very much for this.

The ‘Happy Cemetery’ is located about 18 kilometres west of Sighetu Marmatiei and is one of the most visited sights in the Maramures region.

The crosses, which were painted by local craftsmen, are vivid and predominantly blue in colour.

The idea for this cemetery was conceived in 1935 by the wood sculptor Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a cemetery, unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has a carved image in the upper part, depicting a special moment in the life of the deceased. Underneath, humorous, short poems or rhymed texts describe the life of the person buried there.

Eroii Revolutiei Metro Station | Bucharest

(8 February 2026)

Eroii Revolutiei (in German: Heroes of the Revolution) is a metro station in Bucharest on Line M2. It is meant to commemorate the people who lost their lives during the Romanian Revolution of 1989. The station was opened on January 24, 1986, and was completely redesigned in recent years (pictures).

It is located in Sector 4, south of the city center (Old Town, Lipscani), near Tineretului Park.

Sighisoara / Schässburg | Always worth a visit

(8 February 2026)

The city of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg / Schäßburg, Hungarian: Segesvár) is one of the most important and also most colorful towns in Mureș County.

Schäßburg is located in the historical region of Siebenbürgen (Transylvania) in the heart of Romania and is also named as a possible birthplace (around 1431 — the alternative would be Nuremberg) of Vlad III Drăculea / Țepeș.

Großpold / Apoldu de Sus | Sibiu County

(7 February 2026)

The village of Großpold, in Romanian Apoldu de Sus, is located in the county of Sibiu and is one of the three so-called Landler villages in Transylvania.

The Landler were forced to leave their Austrian homeland in the 18th century due to their Protestant faith and settled mainly in three villages near Sibiu. They have preserved their language and traditional costumes to this day. In Großpold, the typical architecture of the houses has largely been preserved. The two other Landler villages are Neppendorf, in Romanian Turnisor, today incorporated into Sibiu, and Großau, in Romanian Cristian.

We would like to thank Mr. Frank Schleßmann for sending us these beautiful pictures and the corresponding text/explanation.

Sria Fortress and Municipality | Arad County

(7 February 2026)

Siria (in Hungarian Világos, in German Hellburg) is a commune in Arad County.

On the territory of the current commune, there was already a settlement called “Villa Siri” in 1169. Documentarily, Világosvár was mentioned in 1326, referring to the Világos fortress, today the ruins of Siria fortress.

An important part of Siria’s history is the story of the fortress ruins from the 13th century. In 1444, the fortress briefly came into the possession of John Hunyadi, and in the second half of the 15th century, it passed to Matthias Corvinus. For strategic reasons, the Habsburg army destroyed the fortress in 1784.

Today, the fortress ruins are a popular excursion destination

Făgăraș Fortress | Brașov County

(7 February 2026)

On the way from Sibiu to Brașov lies the town of Făgăraș. At the end of the 12th century the town’s fortress was only a wooden fortification, which was expanded into a stone fortress in the 14th century.

The fortress houses a museum, which—like the fortress itself—can be visited. Directly next to the fortress is the cathedral / church Sfantul Ioan Botezatorul.

Beautiful pictures by Mr. Iercosan Marian from a few days ago (end of September 2025).

Cârța Monastery in Transylvania | Sibiu County

(7 February 2026)

The Cârța Monastery (German: Kerz) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in Transylvania, Romania.

It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, almost exactly halfway between the cities of Sibiu and Fagaras, and is today an Evangelical-Lutheran church.

The exact founding date of the Cârța Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A Constance charter dated April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, states vaguely that the monastery was founded, built, and endowed with rights and privileges by his predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th to 15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the founding year of the monastery as being around 1202–1203.

The elegant 19th-century building came into the possession of the famous Chrissoveloni banking family in 1903, then was confiscated during the communist period and converted into a shop. After 1990, the building was brought back to life by its current owner, Jean Chrissoveloni, in collaboration with the architectural firm Square One.

Cluj-Napoca | Impressions

(2 February 2026)

Pictures from Cluj-Napoca (German: Klausenburg, Hungarian: Kolozsvar) from June 29 and 30. The city is (probably*) the second largest city in Romania and the capital of Cluj County in Transylvania.

Cluj-Napoca, with about 400,000 inhabitants, is considered the unofficial capital of the Transylvania region. Holiday 2026 in Sulina | Danube, Delta, Black Sea

(1 February 2026)

The small town of Sulina is located at the mouth of the Danube into the Black Sea, in the Danube Delta.

https://discover-sulina.com (in German, English, French, Dutch, Japanese, and Romanian)

It can only be reached by boat / ships, but it is a dream destination for holidays, nature, tours into the delta, relaxation, and a variety of activities (e.g., kayak tours on the Danube or in the Danube Delta) almost all year round.

Since Sulina is in the southeast of Romania, it is really hot in summer (over 35 degrees), ideal for the more than 40 km long beach on the Black Sea. In spring and autumn, the Danube Delta with its wildlife and nature, the wild horses of the Letea Forest, the Sulina promenade, and much more invite you to stay.

Discover Sulina, you will love it!
