Corbii de Piatra Monastery | Argeș county

(16 January 2025)

Certainly one of the oldest monasteries in Romania is Corbii de Piatra Monastery.

It is located in the village of Jgheaburi, Corbi commune, Argeș county. It was built in a cave complex in 1512, during the reign of Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521).

The monastery church is carved into the rock (sandstone). Next to the church, also carved into the rock, is the monastery’s trapeza, a room which, according to tradition, is said to have been used by Neagoe Basarab as an open-air courtroom for public trials. The monastery is located about 400 m from the center of Corbi, on the left bank of the Doamnei River. The cave church was carved into a massive rock wall, about 30 meters high and 14.5 meters long.

Our advice: Hiking Macinului Mountains | Vraju Peak | Tulcea county

(15 January 2025)

At the beginning of September, cross the new bridge from Brăila over the Danube, continue for about 15 km to Macin and continue straight ahead for about 500 meters after you reach the end of the village.

Then turn left from the main road to the Izvorul Tămăduirii Monastery (also Macin Monastery) and as soon as you turn left again to the monastery, park on the right and walk to the right … into the Macin mountains.

Butterflies, lizards, a tortoise and lots and lots of nature all the way to the Vraju peak, (probably) the highest point in the mountain range, 335 meters above sea level. A marvelous view of the monastery and its surroundings towards the Danube Delta, Brăila and Galați, including the new bridge over the Danube, rewards the ascent in the afternoon, when it is still around 28 degrees.

Duration of the ascent/ descent hike: 4 hours, the last 30-45 minutes of which are rockier and therefore good footwear is a must. The hiking trails are well signed and easy to follow/find.

You can already think about it! Summer at the Black Sea / Beach

(14 January 2025)

Pictures from last years August, which will be repeated in six months time. It was hot, very hot (32 to 38 degrees and sometimes more) and the water was wonderfully refreshing.

Our destination was Vama Veche , the southernmost place on the Romanian Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the Bulgarian border. This year, 30 degrees are already forecast for the end of June, and from the beginning of July the summer vacation on the Black Sea starts…

Romania’s coastline stretches for about 70 km and includes, in addition to Vama Veche, towns such as Constanța, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Costinești, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia and others. There are also long (and deserted) beaches in the Danube Delta region between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe.

Vama Veche is mainly frequented by a young crowd; it’s the party epicenter, practically the “Malle” of Romania, with around 3,000-4,000 visitors on weekends and non-stop loud music.

It is the third largest salt mine and one of the oldest salt mines in Romania. With the Trotuș mine, located at a depth of 240 meters, it hosts the largest respiratory disease treatment unit in the country. The mine is also home to one of the few places of worship in Romania built in the salt mines and dedicated to Saint Varvara. The salt mine is still used today to extract, process and sell salt in Romania and abroad. Between 90,000 and 120,000 tons of salt are extracted every year.

Salina Târgu Ocna is one of the oldest salt mines in Romania and is mentioned in documents dating back to 1502, being listed as a salt extraction area at least since 1353.

Charlotenburg | The only “round village” in Romania

(13 January 2025)

If you want to visit Charlotenburg, you can find this place in the Romanian Banat, Timis County.

Charlotenburg (or Sarlota, also known as Barita) is a village in the commune of Bogda, Timiș county. It is the only “round village” in Romania.

The village was founded by 32 families (171 people) who emigrated from Baden-Württemberg, Alsace-Lorraine and the German-speaking Trentino region. Its existence owes much to Count Karl-Ignaz von Clary and Aldringen, who was appointed president of the Banat administration in 1769. The village was designed and built in a circular shape with an inner diameter of 210 meters.

If you travel on the road (E671) from Timișoara to Arad, you will pass the commune of Vinga (Theresiopolis in German) about 25 km before Arad.

The two churches are very large for such a small community. The Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church, on the left in the picture) and the Roman Catholic Church (Catholic Church, on the right in the picture and in other pictures).

The first documentary mention of Vinga dates back to 1231. After it was sacked and destroyed by the Turks, Vinga was resettled in 1737 and 1741 by about 125 families of “Bulgarian-Bavarians” from Cyprovts in western Bulgaria, who crossed the Danube and settled in different parts of the Banat Plain. Fortified Church Viscri | Brasov county (part 2 of 2)

(10 January 2025)

Both the Transalpina and the Transfăgărășan are open… and especially here, but in many other regions, you can meet them again… brown bears.

Our big request in advance:
DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!
DO NOT ATTRACT BEARS!

BEARS are wild forest animals and not “objects of adventure”, please respect this during your trip and when you encounter one or more bears! Have fun, but stay in the car and keep going slowly.

There are around 8,000-10,000 brown bears living in the wild in Romania, and more and more bears are being attracted to roads and cities, the bears unfortunately getting food from some travelers and so they keep coming back on the roads, even with their cubs.

We understand, it’s quite an experience … but bears can also be dangerous and, more importantly, by feeding them, you are destroying the natural basis of life and perhaps even the life of animals … for a moment of attraction.

Therefore, please let the bears… be bears and show responsibility … Do not feed the bears and please do not stop when you see one or more bears by the roadside. This behavior will attract the bear because it thinks it has food. However, leaving your vehicle in such a situation to get a closer look at a bear should NEVER happen. Thank you!

A worth reading article on dealing with bears:
https://www.trentino.com/…/verhaltensregeln-bei…/

It should be noted that feeding bears in Romania has now become a punishable offense. Your vacation can end quickly and prematurely here!

Fortified Church Viscri | Brasov county (part 2 of 2)

(10 January 2025)

The village of Viscri (German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in the county of Brasov in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town/castle of Rupea (German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighișoara (German: Schäßburg). The village had about 700 inhabitants between the 18th and 20th centuries, mainly Transylvanian Saxons plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterized by both the fortified church and the village structure, characterized by Saxon farms.

INFO ROMÂNIA 2024 | Markets (weekly) in Romania | Pictures from a market in Galati

(10 January 2025)

In addition to the “typical German” shops like Lidl, Penny, Kaufland, DM and many others, there are many more shopping opportunities in Romania than in Germany and Austria.

The so-called “Grocers” in every village and almost on every street corner (comparable to the Edeka stores of 30 years ago) in the cities are open 7 days a week, many of them (especially in the cities) even 24/7.

Unlike in Germany and Austria, all supermarkets in Romania are also open every day (even Sundays), usually from 7:00 to 22:00 or from 10:00 in shopping centers. Before public holidays or during school vacations, some supermarkets may even be open 7 days a week / 24 hours a day (e.g. the Carrefour supermarket chain in France).

But, back to the pictures, there are daily markets (called piata, comparable to German weekly markets, but seven times a week) all over the country, which also offer fresh produce (mostly fruits and vegetables, bakery products, but also many other products) fresh from the region and from neighboring or nearby countries (Turkey). One thing that makes Romania even more attractive for a vacation … Walking through the market every morning and buying fresh food for the day. Where else can you do that in German-speaking countries?

As for prices, the images are as of March 2023 in LEI (RON) (5 Lei / Ron corresponds to approx. 1 Euro)

Please note: The prices are in 2024 and have increased in some cases depending on the offer / season and, more importantly, vary greatly from region to region. The pictures shown are from Galați. The city is in a quiet location, directly on the Danube (800 meters wide and more) and at the beginning of the Danube Delta (bordering Ukraine). Current daytime temperatures, using this week (June 10-15, 2024) as an example: 27-35 degrees.

INFOS RUMÄNIEN 2025 | Camping | Glamping | Camping sites for caravans and more

(10 January 2025)

We continue to work on our new information section (sorted by regions in Romania) on camping, caravanning and more.

https://xn--urlaub-in-rumnien-2qb.de/en/uir/camping-in-romania-en/

RV and free camping / wild camping | Many things are possible, not all are allowed and some can even be dangerous. Romania’s Carpathian Mountains are inhabited by brown bears, there are many national parks and protected areas, and many things are forbidden. However, if you don’t want to stay in an official campsite, ask in the town you want to camp in. It is certainly possible to stay on private property (with permission), in front of a hostel (with permission) or elsewhere. But please ask… and so that locals can inform you about possible dangers (e.g. bears).

Our online list is still missing a lot of information and details, so please help us to complete this list (in Romanian, German and English).

New places can be added to the site for free and after a quick check we will publish them online. Thanks in advance to everyone who helps us

There is also a small rating system so that those who wish to leave their impressions can do so. Please, of course, choose the right words. Thank you.

About 35 km northeast of the city of Brasov, in the direction of Sfântu Gheorghe, is the Medveles találkozóhely bear observation point in Covasna county. INFO ROMANIA 2025 | Parking in Romanian cities

(9 January 2025)

Many tourists arrive with their own car or rent a car at the airport and are … a bit overwhelmed by the parking situation in Romania’s cities, so here are some tips and information.

Relaxed parking in Brăila
The city of Brăila is located in south-eastern Romania and has around 150,000 inhabitants. There is always plenty of parking in the center and …

Neighboring city Galati …
The city of Galati is also located in southeastern Romania and is neighboring the city of Brăila with about 300,000 inhabitants. In many parts of the city ( center, but also in the peripheral areas ) parking places are payable ( Monday to Saturday, every 8:00 – 20:00 clock ) Payment can be done via the parking machine on the website or via SMS ( Romanian phone number required ). IMPORTANT: On average, it takes only a short time to find a stylish yellow or orange immobilizer on the front wheel. Depending on the time of day, 200 or 300 lei ( about 40 or 60 euro ) are then due for removal.

Kronstadt ( Brasov ), take/plan time for your search
In the center or close to the center of Brasov ( Brasov ) is almost any time of the day it is not easy to find a parking place. There are few parking places and due to many restrictions ( single streets ) you may need to find a parking place. You really shouldn’t rush here! Parking spaces are subject to a fee ( Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am – 8:00 pm clock ) and can be via the parking machine on the website ( usually only one or two hours ) or. via the app ( also 24 hours/day ). Also, in Brasov there are paid parking spaces all over the city, so always pay attention to the appropriate signs.

Bucharest … without words
Parking in Bucharest is easy, either in the hotel parking lot or 20 km outside the city. Anyone who has ever been to Bucharest in their car will quickly notice … you need a lot of time, patience and also a certain serenity towards the driving style, which here is similar to some Italian cities. In many districts, downtown, shopping centers and many others, the traffic is usually quite rough ( Navi: in 800 meters you reach your destination. Expected travel time: 48 minutes ) Parking is chargeable and can usually be paid on site, by SMS ( Roman phone number required ) or by app. Depending on the district ( old town ), it is very difficult or at extreme prices ( 300 lei ( 60 euro ) for 24 hours. On a “private parking lot” to find a parking space. Find a hotel with free parking and walk around or use a taxi / Uber or buses / metro, it’s worth it !
In the countryside and small towns

Here is almost always very relaxed, park, point. But please always take a look at any pointers ( usually near sights/destinations ). May also be charged there.

More cities, experiences for parking in Romania are welcome as comments!

And on the side : RO Vignette …, to be able to use the highway, but also the country roads ( so it’s mandatory for every car ) you need a vignette. The Vignette ( RO Viniete ) can be bought and paid online ( German Surface ) one month in advance ( so before your vacation ) Also the costs are manageable and ok. For a car, 3 euro for 7 days, 7 euro for 30 days, 13 euro for 90 days and / or 28 euro for a whole year. Rental cars already have this vignette, but still wondering …

Here the link: https://www.roviniete.ro/de/

INFORMATION ROMANIA 2025 | Traveling in / to Romania | The daily obligation and much more … !!!!!

(9 January 2025)

Please note that when traveling in and to Romania. As of July 01, 2023, lights have also become mandatory during daylight hours in cities as well as outside cities (previously only outside cities).

Please also note that you need a vignette for almost all roads outside cities (highways, but also country roads). The costs are not high, and the vignette can be bought in advance at many gas stations, but also online (at least one month before arrival) https://www.roviniete.ro/en/.

You also need a vignette for traveling to and from Hungary (on the highway). This can also be purchased online (link as above). You can also purchase the Austrian vignette via https://asfinag.at or from gas stations in Germany / Hungary (and of course in Austria, only then it is probably too late). Please always keep/take the invoice with you, in Austria you can also check the receipt in addition to the vignette.

Please note the speed limits in Romania:
max. 50 km / cities
max. 90 km / country roads (even if Google Maps shows 100 km!!!)
max. 130 km / highways.

Even if other drivers (trucks!!!) drive faster in cities, please respect the speed limit. For safety reasons and to avoid fines.

Pedestrians ALWAYS have priority at zebra pedestrian crossings (unless there are traffic lights). Please note!

And … in Romania you must have two reflective triangles and a fire extinguisher in your car. “Normally”, the lack of these in foreign vehicles is not penalized, but it is required by law and should be respected!

Have a good trip | Have a safe journey!

Corvin Castle / Fortress in Hunedoara

(9 January 2025)

Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Castle) is one of the most important non-church buildings in Transylvania.
The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification. Built and located in the south-western part of Hunedoara ( German name: Eisenmarkt ) in western Romania.

The listed castle bears many other names ( Corvin’s Castle, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle ) which can be traced in its location or its owners.

Hungarian statesman and army leader Johann Hunyadi rebuilt an existing fortification after 1440 to become the ancestral castle of Hunyadis. In the second phase of construction, the castle was extended in 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. In the 19th century, Prince Gabor Bethlen made further major changes to the building. As a result, the current castle has a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle has been in Austria since 1724 and has been in Romanian state ownership since 1918. In addition to attracting tourists, the castle is ( and has been used as a backdrop for a variety of Romanian and international movie productions. The castle now houses a museum.

Valea Viilor | Sibiu county

(7 January 2025)

Valea Viilor (German: Wurmloch) is a commune in Sibiu county, Transylvania region.

Valea Viilor, originally Vorumloc, was probably first mentioned under the Hungarian name Baromlak in 1224 (possibly 1305). Transylvanian-Saxon Hörigendorf, which was originally held by the nobility, was later able to join the Mediascher see and thus become free. Until 1964, the place in Romania was run under the German-derived name Vorumloc, later renamed “Valea Viilor” (German: valley of the vines).

In 1850 the proportion of Germans was over 65% and in 1977 over 50%. Today only about 1-2% of the inhabitants are German.

Biertan fortified church in winter

(6 January 2025)

This church/fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom) in Sibiu county, Transylvania.

Biertan belongs to the first German-Saxon settlements and was officially mentioned in documents in 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like any Saxon settlement, it is distinguished by a row of houses arranged around a central square, above which rises the imposing fortified church. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal residence of the Evangelical Church C.A.), which favored the development of one of the largest peasant communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, which is definitely worth a visit.

Hermannstadt (Sibiu) in Transylvania

(6 January 2025)

Hermannstadt (Sibiu in Romanian, Nagyszeben in Hungarian and Hermestatt in Sieburg-Saxon) is a town in the geographical region of Seiburg and was/is one of the centers of the Seven Citizens of Saxony.

Probably in 1147 the first German settlers arrived in the area; they settled on the hill above the river Zibin, today’s Oberstadt. The first documented mention of the town dates back to 1191 as praepositum Cibiniensem; a fool appeared. From 1223 the Latin name is “Villa Hermannni” and from 1241 the German equivalent is Hermannstorf.

In the 14s. Century, Hermannstadt developed into a commercial center of international importance. It was one of the most important towns in Transylvania – perhaps even the most important, as it was not only the center of trade, administration and the church, but also the largest fortress in the whole of Transylvania.

Country life is very different from city life. It’s marked by family, hospitality, traditions, traditions, deprivation and hard work until old age.

And … it’s often a happier life than we imagine. Those who have little, have fewer worries, and the many daily world news items that we constantly receive on our phones (and don’t necessarily need), reach these people less often, or perhaps not at all.

Banitei Gorges | Hunedoara county

(3 January 2025)

The gorges are located in the municipality of Bănița in Hunedoara County and run along high limestone walls.

They are about 300 meters long and were dug deep into the limestone by water. They can be visited on calm summer days, although waterproof shoes are a must as the gorge path also passes through water.

The height of the rock walls is about 10-15 meters and show how water has eroded the rock. In many places, the rocks form a roof that has been formed over hundreds of years by horizontal erosion, depending on the current.

The German-speaking Kálnoky’s guesthouse in the Transylvanian village of Miklósvár / Micloșoara dates back to the 19th century. The building has been carefully restored to preserve the original charm and character of the time and place.

The village itself doesn’t have great infrastructure, so no claims to technical perfection can (and should) be made. It’s living history in a wonderful setting… if you like it, you’ll love it and never forget it.
