Ardei umpluti (German: stuffed peppers) and our beloved sarmale, but this time all vegetarian, no meat. We had lots of comments on our Facebook post a couple weeks ago asking for a meatless version. Here it is. And, as many wrote then, you can substitute the meat and leaves used to coat the sarmals in a variety of ways.

PS: Three photos were taken before they were cooked. The photo of the two peppers shows them after they were cooked.

Delicious Romanian cuisine

(13 July 2024)

Romanian cuisine is rich in traditional dishes, which can vary from region to region.

The best known Romanian dishes include mititeii*, ciorba de burta** and mămăliguța***

Bucovina | Moldovan Monasteries

(12 July 2024)

The Moldavian monasteries are located in the historical region of Bukovina and were built in the 15th and 16th centuries in the former tower of the ruler of Moldavia.

The monasteries are famous for their magnificent frescoes. Many of the buildings date back to Stephen the Great, who is believed to have founded a monastery for every battle he won. Eight of them are world heritage sites.

The special feature of Moldavian monasteries is their colorful painting unique in Europe. The monks also wanted to bring the content of the Holy Scriptures closer to the people down below, who could neither read nor write. So they used the monastery’s interior walls, facades and protective walls to depict scenes and parables from the Bible in colorful drawings, paintings and frescoes. They are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.

Each cross has an image carved on the top, representing a special moment in the life of the deceased. Underneath, short, humorous poems or rhyming texts describe the life of the person buried there.

With a population of around 400 000, Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of Transylvania. Castle of Wolves Transylvania | Hunedoara county

(8 July 2024)

The Castle of the Transylvanian Wolves is located in Chimindina (Hunedoara county), just 15 minutes from Deva.

“In the distant past, the Castle of the Wolves of Chimindia was the place where the Great White Wolf gathered the wolves of Dacia to plan their support in the Dacian-Roman war. Rooted in a medieval history and used as a military base by Austria-Hungary, the castle combines historic architecture with the beauty of nature, offering an oasis of tranquility.

The 15,000-square-meter courtyard is illuminated by miniatures of traditional households and churches created by master Ion Rodo ș, the only Romanian folk master in the Romanian Guinness Book of Records. The courtyard also offers a spacious play area and the ticket price of 20 lei (€4) includes all activities for children.”

Nuremberg – Brasov twinning signed ceremonially

(8 July 2024)

On the occasion of the German-Romanian Cultural Festival in Nuremberg last weekend, the Mayor of Nuremberg, Markus König, and the Mayor of Brasov (Kronstadt), Allen Coliban, ceremoniously signed the twinning certificate of the city.

https://kronstadt-erleben.de | https://tourismus.nuernberg.de

All the guests, including Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder, were delighted by the “hearty Romanian food … with lots of garlic, of course”. Following Romania’s participation in the 2024 European Football Championship, Mr. Cristian Macedonschi presented the guests of honor (including Nuremberg City Councillor Werner Henning, who has been involved in this urban partnership for many years) with gifts of T-shirts and supporter hats from the Romanian Football Federation. Romania once again showed its positive energy and left a good impression, which is documented in the atmosphere and in the media in many ways.

Vinga | Arad county | Arad | Banat

(8 July 2024)

If you drive on the road (E671) from Timișoara to Arad, you will pass the community of Vinga (Theresiopolis in German) about 25 km before Arad.

The two churches are very large for such a small community. The Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church, on the left in the picture) and the Roman Catholic Church (Catholic Church, on the right in the picture and in other pictures).

The first documentary mention of Vinga dates back to 1231. After it was sacked and destroyed by the Turks, Vinga was resettled in 1737 and 1741 by about 125 families of “Bulgarian-Bavarians” from Cyprovts in western Bulgaria, who crossed the Danube and settled in different parts of the Banat Plain. On August 1, 1744, Vinga received the status of a town with a magistrate and various privileges from Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.

Hurezi Monastery (Horezu Monastery) | Valcea county

(8 July 2024)

Horezu Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of nuns located in the historical region of Muntenia Mică, in Valcea county.

https://discover-valcea.com

Situated at the foot of the Căpățânii Mountains, a mountain massif in the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romanii de Jos, the monastery is about three kilometers (in a straight line) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (huhurezi in Romanian) nesting in the woods around the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then Prince of Muntenia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and completed in 1709. It was a men’s monastery until 1862. After the monks were transferred to Bistrița, nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is a listed building.

Situated on a hill, the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The smaller outer wall surrounds the entire monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by buildings of different heights and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side through a bell tower with a massive wooden gate armored with steel. The monastery church of Saints Constantine and Helen in the center of the complex is 32 meters long, 14 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697. There are several tombs in the vestibule of the church, the most beautiful of which is decorated with marble and a carved lid, intended for Prince Brâncoveanu, but which never fulfilled its purpose and was therefore never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and covered in gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was built in 1697. The frescoes in the chapel were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

Let’s go! Summer at the Black Sea / Beach

(5 July 2024)

Pictures from early August this year, which will be repeated soon. It was hot, very hot (between 32 and 38 degrees and sometimes more) and the water was wonderfully fresh.

Our destination was Vama Veche, the southernmost town on the Romanian Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the Bulgarian border. This year, 30 degrees have already been forecast for the end of June, and the summer vacation on the Black Sea will start in early July at the latest.

Romania’s coastline stretches for about 70 kilometers and, in addition to Vama Veche, includes towns such as Constanța, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Constinești, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia and many others. There are also long (and secluded) beaches in the Danube Delta region between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe.

Vama Veche is mainly visited by a younger crowd, it’s the party kilometer, so to say, the “Shore” of Romania, with about 3 – 4,000 visitors on weekends and non-stop loud music.
