Corvin Castle / Fortress in Hunedoara | Hunedoara County

(31 July 2025)

The Hunedoara Castle (also known as Corvin Castle, in German Burg Eisenmarkt, in Romanian Castelul Corvinilor or Castelul Huniazilor, in Hungarian Vajdahunyadi vár) is one of the most important non-religious buildings in Transylvania.

https://welcome-to-romania.com | https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de

The stone castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the southwestern part of the city of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The listed castle has many other names (Corvin Castle, Castle of the Corvins, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which refer to its location or its owners.

The Hungarian statesman and military leader John Hunyadi had an existing fortification converted into the ancestral seat of the Hunyadi family after 1440. In the second construction phase, the castle was expanded from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, further major modifications were made under Prince Gabor Bethlen. The present-day castle therefore shows a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle was in Austrian possession from 1724 and has been in Romanian state ownership since 1918. In addition to being a tourist attraction, the castle has been and is used as a backdrop for numerous Romanian and international film productions. Today, the castle houses a museum.

We thank Tom & Helga for these beautiful pictures from their Romania tour in September and October 2024. Many thanks!

Transalpina | DN 67C

(29 July 2025)

The Transalpina, also called “The King’s Way,” connects the towns of Novaci in Gorj County (to the south) and Sebes in Alba County (to the north).

Over a length of 138 kilometers, this road crosses the Parang Mountains (Carpathians) and reaches its highest point at the Urdele Pass.

Our tip: Hike Muntii Macinului | Vraju Peak | Tulcea Rural District

(29 July 2025)

In early September, cross the new bridge at Braila over the Danube, continue for about 15 km to Macin and continue straight on for about 500 metres after reaching the end of the village.

Then turn left off the main road towards the Monastery of the Spring of Healing (also Macin Monastery) and as soon as you turn left again towards the monastery, park on the right and walk to the right … into the Macin mountains.

Butterflies, lizards, a tortoise and lots and lots of nature all the way to the top of Vraju, (probably) the highest point in the mountain range, 335 metres above sea level. A great view of the monastery and the surrounding area towards the Danube Delta, Braila and Galati, including the new bridge over the Danube, rewards the afternoon climb, when it’s still around 28 degrees.

Hike time up/down: 4 hours, with the last 30-45 minutes being rockier and therefore good footwear is a must. The hiking trails are well signposted and easy to follow/find.

The historic city center is full of life at night. The wonderful, very large city park invites visitors to linger, and many historic buildings can be explored and experienced. One day is not enough, and certainly not just one evening

The town of Târgoviște (German: Tergowiste or Tergowisch) is the county seat of Dâmbovița County and the former capital of the historical region Greater Wallachia. The first known mention of the town dates to 1396 and comes from the Bavarian crusader Johannes Schiltberger. In Târgoviște, Vlad III. Drăculea was enthroned in 1456. In 1499 the Wallachian prince Radu cel Mare (Radu the Great) rebuilt the Hill Church of Saint Nicholas, but it was not consecrated until 1514 under the rule of Prince Neagoe Basarab. Today it is known as Dealu Monastery.

Prince Matei Basarab (1632–1654) repaired the city walls, renovated the old churches, and built several new houses of worship. Until 1659 Târgoviște was the capital of Wallachia and remained a princely residence until 1714.

See a small volcano up close… here it is

(27 July 2025)

The mud volcanoes (Romanian: Vulcanii Noroioși) are located in the commune of Berca in Buzau County. As early as 1924, the area, covering 30 km², was declared a nature reserve.

https://welcome-to-romania.com | https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de

The main attraction of the reserve is the small mud volcanoes, which are only a few centimeters or meters high, and are an example of cold volcanism. The volcanoes are formed by gases rising from about 3,000 meters deep through clay and water-bearing layers. At the surface, the mud dries and forms structures that resemble volcanoes.

Syrian Fortress and Municipality | Arad County

(25 July 2025)

Șiria (in Hungarian Világos, in German Hellburg) is a commune in Arad County.

On the territory of today’s commune, there was already a settlement called “Villa Siri” in 1169. Vilagosvar was mentioned in documents in 1326, referring to the Vilagos fortress, today the Șiria castle ruins.

Part of Șiria’s history is the story of the 13th-century castle ruins. In 1444, the fortress briefly came into the possession of John Hunyadi, and in the second half of the 15th century, it passed to Matthias Corvinus. For strategic reasons, the Habsburg army destroyed the fortress in 1784.

Today, the castle ruins are a popular excursion destination

Mamaia – Black Sea – Welcome to summer 2025

Summer is here | Black Sea / Beach

(24 July 2025)

Pictures from August in previous years, which will soon be repeated. The sun is shining, it will get very hot, and the water is wonderfully fresh.

The Romanian seaside stretches for about 70 km and includes, besides Vama Veche, places like Constanta, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Costinesti, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia, and several others. There are also long (and deserted) beaches in the Danube Delta region, between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe. The total length of the Romanian Black Sea coast is about 280 kilometers.

Our destination (the pictures) was Vama Veche , the southernmost place on the Romanian Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the border with Bulgaria.

Vama Veche is mainly visited by a younger crowd; it is the party zone, the so-called “Malle” of Romania, with about 3,000 to 4,000 visitors on weekends and loud music around the clock.

The Barsana Monastery, located on the southeastern edge of the village, was first mentioned in 1390, but was abandoned and dismantled around 1800. The buildings currently on the site were later rebuilt in traditional wooden style. Today, it is home to a Romanian Orthodox nunnery.

Beautiful pictures of the Manastirea (monastery) Tismana | Gorj County

(23 July 2025)

Tismana is a small town in the Romanian region of Wallachia, in Gorj County, in the southwest of Romania.

This town is known for the Romanian Orthodox Tismana Monastery, the oldest still existing monastery in Wallachia.

As early as 1377, a monastery was built here by Prince Radu II, which was rebuilt in 1495 (after falling into ruin). The town (since 2004, Tismana has city status) developed in the 15th/16th century around the monastery and is today an important Romanian center of the wood industry.

Viscri | German-Weisskirch | Transylvania

(22 July 2025)

The village of Viscri (German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in the district of Brasov (Kronstadt) in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town/castle of Rupea (German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighișoara (German: Schäßburg). The village had about 700 inhabitants between the 18th and 20th centuries, mainly Transylvanian Saxons, plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterised both by the fortified church and the village structure, which was shaped by Saxon farms.

The village was founded by the Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in a document from 1185. The fortified church stands at the north-western end of the village.

We would like to thank “Schnuff” and his biker friends, who showed us a lot of new things in and about Romania on their motorcycle trip in August 2023.

The “Merry Cemetery” of Săpânța | Maramures County

(22 July 2025)

Beautiful pictures from the “Merry Cemetery” and the museum/workshop of Săpânța (Maramures County), which we received in May 2025 from Mr. Alexander Laszlo (first photo by Biro Zoltan). The “Merry Cemetery” is located about 18 km west of Sighetu Marmatiei and is one of the most visited attractions in the Maramures region.

The crosses, painted by local craftsmen, are done in vivid and predominantly blue colors.

The idea for this cemetery originated in 1935 and comes from the wood sculptor Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a cemetery unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful way. Each cross features a carved image at the top, depicting a special moment in the life of the deceased. Below, humorous, short poems or rhymed texts describe the life of the person buried there.

Transfagarasan in the Carpathians of Romania

(21 July 2025)

A magical road in and through the Fagaras Mountains. The Transfagarasan road connects the two historical regions of Wallachia and Transylvania in a breathtaking mountain landscape.

Currently open (probably until sometime in mid/end of October) and if you are already here, you should definitely also check out the “neighboring road,” the Transalpina.

Our tip for a round trip: Sibiu (Hermannstadt) > towards Avrig / Brasov and then head south onto the Transfagarasan > Curtea de Arges, Arges County > Valcea County > Brezoi and via the Transalpina to Sebes and back to Sibiu. We recommend at least one, if not two or three overnight stays along the way.

At the Airport | Buzias | Timis County

(21 July 2025)

A small town in Banat with its own airport… well, actually just with its own airplanes, which probably belong to the owner of the café/restaurant.

Buzias in Timis County is alive with the charm of the past: Emperor Franz Joseph commissioned the construction of a magnificent garden with a round wooden pavilion here for Empress Sissi in 1875 (more about this in a future post).

And for 20 years now, right next to it, there has been La Aeroport, the only airport/airplane restaurant in Romania. Both are definitely worth a visit.

The place is also perfect for children and families, as you can not only enjoy a coffee, ice cream, or more under the airplanes… but one airplane is also ready to take the little guests on a journey into the realm of fantasy ✈️

SO BEAUTIFUL | On the Timis River near Hitias

(21 July 2025)

On the way from Charlotenburg to Buzias, just before the village of Hitias, you cross the Timis River. We were there (July 20, 2025), at the right time to take beautiful photos of a flock of sheep being driven across the river.

Charlotenburg | The only “round village” in Romania

(21 July 2025)

The village of Charlotenburg is located in the historical region of Banat, in Timis County. Charlotenburg (or Sarlota, also Barita) belongs to the commune of Bogda and is the only “round village” in Romania.

The village was founded by 32 families (171 people) who immigrated from Baden-Württemberg, Alsace-Lorraine, and the German-speaking Trentino. Its existence is mainly due to Count Karl-Ignaz von Clary und Aldringen, who was appointed president of the Banat administration in 1769. The village was planned and built in a circular shape, with an inner diameter of 210 meters.

We thank Mr. Frank Schleßmann for sending these pictures and the corresponding (partial) text / explanation.

PS: We followed the spelling on the village sign. Alternatively, Charlottenburg with double T is also often used. Just for your information.

Charlotenburg | Land of the Swabians | Timis County

Our visit yesterday took us to the Land of the Swabians, more precisely to the Schwabenland Swabian restaurant in the village of Charlotenburg (the only round village in Romania) in the historical region of Banat, Timis County.

Delicious Swabian specialties (Käsespätzle, Maultaschen soup, …) in a wonderful, peaceful atmosphere, perfect

In addition to a beer garden with a Code Playground, there is also a small museum showcasing the Swabian past and present from the region, Banat… the homeland of the Banat Swabians in Romania.

Fortified church | Tartlau Farm | Prejmer

(19 July 2025)

A beautiful shot of the fortified church / peasant fortress of Tartlau in Prejmer (Tartlau), Brasov County, in the Transylvania region.

The construction of the church in the center of the complex was probably started in 1218 by the Teutonic Order, which, however, was expelled from the region in 1225. Under the Cistercian monastery of Cârța, the construction was then continued. A special feature of the inventory is the late Gothic winged altar from the mid-15th century.

We thank Mrs. Daniela and Mr. Gerhard Zitzmann for the permission to use this picture.

Church of St. Nicholas in Densus | Hunedoara County

(18 July 2025)

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County, in western Romania, is the oldest stone church in the country.

Built in its current form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple, it used materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. The church interior features 15th-century frescoes depicting Jesus in traditional Romanian attire.

Historians suggest the site once housed a Dacian temple for the god Zamolxis, later turned into a Roman temple for Mars. The church’s origins trace back to the 4th century, making it the oldest church in Romania and Southeast Europe.

We thank Mr. Frank Schleßmann for sending these beautiful pictures (April 22, 2025).

Targoviste | Dambovita County

We are here, completely underestimated the city, and just have to say: it is 100% worth a visit!!!

The historic center is full of life at night, the wonderful and very large city park invites you to stay, and many historic buildings can be explored and experienced. One day is not enough, and just one evening is definitely not either

The city of Targoviste (in German Tergowiste or Tergowisch) is the county seat of Dambovita County and the former capital of the historical region of Wallachia. The first known mention of the city was in 1396 by the Bavarian crusader Johannes Schiltberger.

In Targoviste, Vlad III Draculea was enthroned in 1456*. In 1499, the Wallachian prince Radu cel Mare (Radu the Great) rebuilt the hill church of Saint Nicolae, but it was only in 1514, under the rule of Prince Neagoe Basarab, that the church was consecrated. Today it is known as Dealu Monastery.

Prince Matei Basarab (1632–1654) restored the city wall, renovated the old churches, and built several new places of worship. Until 1659, Targoviste was the capital of Wallachia and remained a princely residence until 1714.

Airplanes in the stomach… or better yet, in your own garden

(12 July 2025)

Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly where this “airport” is located, but it must be somewhere around Timisoara / in Timis County. We gladly welcome any information.

But… it’s a really cool idea, you save yourself from mowing the lawn and there’s no space for big trees (which only drop leaves in autumn anyway ) And you can see a certain freedom that people still have here in Romania. Instead of a development plan (the fence must be green, two apple trees and a cherry tree must be planted)… here you can even put an airplane in your garden. The kids will love it

We thank Tom & Helga for these beautiful pictures from their Romania tour in September and October 2024. Many thanks!

Sulina … Waterfront Promenade | Danube Delta

(11 July 2025)

The Sulina Waterfront (promenade) is approximately five (5) km long. It starts at Mile 2 and, alongside the typical houses in blue and green, the path is interrupted by new constructions (mostly hotels and accommodations) until reaching the old center of the town.

https://discover-sulina.com | https://willkommen-in-rumänien.de/

Also, right in the town, you encounter horses that belong to no one and move freely as they please. There are few cars (as they must be brought to Sulina by ship), the clocks run slower here … and that’s a good thing!

To reach Sulina, it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes by a small boat (max. 12 people, up to 80 km/h!!) from Tulcea. This ride must be experienced at least once.

Timisoara, the first city with electric street lighting in Europe

(7 July 2025)

Around 140 years ago, Timișoara / Temeswar already proved its uniqueness as a city in Europe.

On 12 November 1884, nearly 60 kilometers of streets in the city center of Timișoara were electrically illuminated with 731 lamps*. At that time, it was a record in Europe and the second place in the world after New York.

* The number of lamps and kilometers are based on various sources with the same statement found online.
** Of course, the lamps were smaller than the one shown in the picture. This lamp was placed only as a reminder and is no longer used for lighting in Timișoara.

INFO ROMANIA | Camping | Glamping | Motorhome parking spots and more

(7 July 2025)

We continue to work on our new information section (sorted by regions in Romania) about camping, motorhome travel, and more.

https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de/en/uir/camping-in-romania-en/

Motorhomes and wild camping | Many things are possible, not everything is allowed, and some things can be quite dangerous. Romania’s Carpathian Mountains are home to brown bears, there are many national parks and protected areas, and many activities are forbidden However, if you don’t want to stay at an official campsite, please ask in the local area. There is usually a possibility to park on private property (with permission), in front of a guesthouse (with permission), or elsewhere. But please, always ask… local residents can also inform you about possible dangers (e.g., bears).

Our online list still lacks a lot of information, so we kindly ask for your help to complete this overview (in German, Romanian, and English).

You can submit new places for free directly on the site, and after a quick review, we will publish them online. Many thanks in advance to all the contributors

There is also a small rating system where you can share your impressions. Please always choose appropriate wording. Thank you.

On both sides, the gorge is bordered by steep walls about 300 meters high, in which several caves are found. As early as 1938, the gorge was declared a nature reserve due to the presence of over 1,000 plant species, some of them alpine. On an area of 176 hectares, about 70 species of birds, fish, amphibians, and some mammals such as foxes, weasels, martens, and wild boars live here.

Transylvania-Saxon Hörigendorf, which was originally held by the nobility, was later able to join the see of Mediascher and thus become free. Until 1964, the local in Romania was run under the German derivative name Vorumloc, then renamed “Valea Viilor” (in German: valea viilor).

Fortified churches could shelter the inhabitants of entire villages during attacks. Each family received a small chamber. In one of the fortified churches, there were over 200 such chambers. There was also a school, weaving workshop, etc. inside, because the villages were often besieged for a long time… very interesting to see, at some fortified churches we were allowed to climb up to the tower on adventurous paths. Without any safety precautions, something that would be impossible in Austria. They just say: be careful, steep steps. When you stand under a bell supported by rotten wooden beams, you better not think about it. Another day with many new impressions. ”

Thanks to Gerhard and Daniela Zitzmann for the photos and text.
