“Romania, Day 10 – Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.
Waking up early was worth it. The boat trip at sunrise was WOW.
A lazy day in the campground today, doing a little cleanup, continue tomorrow. A few pics of the lovely Danube Delta, could have done a lot more. Hard to believe that last week there were drone attacks on a Ukrainian port about 25 km away. But we feel very safe here.

Sarmale… a magic word and very, very DELICIOUS

(28 June 2024)

Sarmele are not prepared everywhere in Romania according to the same recipe. Depending on region and individual taste, they also vary in size from place to place.

Sarmaua contains meat wrapped with other ingredients in vine leaves or pickled cabbage. Sarmal can also be meatless (vegetarian) with vegetables.

We present a special recipe from Moldova with meat stuffing.
To 1 kg of minced meat (pork, beef, chicken or a mixture) add:
– 4 – 5 medium onions
– 100 grams of rice
– salt, pepper – 1 teaspoon each
– Dill and parsley – to taste
– Tomato broth (150 grams)
– 4 tablespoons oil (in combination with chicken)

If the meat is lean, add a few tablespoons of breadcrumbs or cornmeal to bind the mixture better. Mix the contents well and then wrap in vine leaves or cabbage, depending on your preference.
Cook for about two (2) hours, placing the sarmals close together in a saucepan and adding water. When the liquid in which the sarm is cooking is low, add hot water to compensate.
Check after the first hour of cooking and then as often as you think necessary.

Thanks to “Mom” Postolache for the recipe and to her daughter for her hard work and pictures.

About 120 sarme are made from the amount of ingredients. These are usually eaten with Smantana (sour cream/sour cream) and Ardei chili (chili peppers). Also, depending on the region, white bread and Mardolina (made from corn grits, similar to Italian Mardolina) are added.

We wish you Pofta buna (Bon apetit)

Viscri Town and Fortified Church | Brasov county

(21 June 2024)

The village of Viscri (German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in the county of Brasov in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town/castle of Rupea (German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighișoara (German: Schäßburg). The village had about 700 inhabitants between the 18th and 20th centuries, mainly Transylvanian Saxons plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterized by both the fortified church and the village structure, which was shaped by the Saxon farms.

Viscri is/became famous through King Charles III, who owned a house/estate here and regularly visited the village.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons in the late 12th century and was first mentioned in a document from 1185. The fortified church stands at the north-western end of the village.

In the 12th century, the Seclavs (a Hungarian-speaking population group in eastern Transylvania) built a small church with a Romanesque hall here before the German settlers. It was enlarged in the 13th century. After the first Turkish invasions, the church was fortified in the 14th century and a fortified ring with defense towers was erected.

Oravița – Anina railway line in Banat | And in summer

(20 June 2024)

The Oravița – Lisava – Anina railway line (in Caras-Severin county) was inaugurated on December 15, 1863, the first mountain railway in what is now Romania.

Construction began in 1861 and was a difficult engineering task, as the railroad is located in a mountainous region (the western part of the Banat Mountains). The 33.4 km long railway line has no less than 14 tunnels with a total length of 2.1 km and nine (9) viaducts.

The route starts in Oravița and then climbs the plateau of the Semenic Mountains on a route where no other road exists.

Road to the Seven Scari Canyon | Brasov county

(20 June 2024 / Images: September 2023)

Shortly after leaving Brasov in the direction of Sinaia (Bucharest), turn left towards the Seven Stairs gorge.

It’s a good hour’s walk to the gorge, or the Seven Stairs, which is crisscrossed by a stream with clear, cool water and lots of nature. Even if you don’t enter the gorge via the stairs (there’s a fee, another three hours of walking!), the hike up there and back is certainly beautiful.

For hiking: sturdy footwear is highly recommended. Here and there, you’ll go over tree trunks, small wooden bridges and loose stones, or you’ll walk directly in the stream bed or on a gravel path. You should definitely take a drink with you.

Let’s go! Summer at the Black Sea / Beach

(15 June 2024)

Pictures from early August this year, which will be repeated soon. It was hot, very hot (between 32 and 38 degrees and sometimes more) and the water was wonderfully fresh.

Our destination was Vama Veche, the southernmost town on the Romanian Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the Bulgarian border. This year, 30 degrees have already been forecast for the end of June, and the summer vacation on the Black Sea will start in early July at the latest.

Romania’s coastline stretches for about 70 kilometers and, in addition to Vama Veche, includes towns such as Constanța, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Constinești, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia and many others. There are also long (and secluded) beaches in the Danube Delta region between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe.

Vama Veche is mainly visited by a younger crowd, it’s the party kilometer, so to say, the “Shore” of Romania, with about 3 – 4,000 visitors on weekends and non-stop loud music.

Petersberg | Sânpetru | Brasov county

(12 June 2024)

The Protestant fortified church in Petersberg is the only one in Transylvania in which all three enclosure walls have been preserved.

The village was probably founded during the time of the Teutonic Order (1211-1225) and belonged to the Tartlau Hundred. It was first mentioned in a document from 1240. In this year, the Hungarian King Bela IV donated the villages of Tartlau, Honigberg, Marienburg and Petersberg to the Cistercian Order. The Order was to receive the tax revenues from these localities; in addition, no building work, works of art or cemeteries could be built, commissioned or consecrated without the Cistercians’ consent.

INFO ROMANIA 2024 | Bears on the Transfăgărășan and in Romania !!!

(10 June 2024)

Both the Transalpina and the Transfăgărășan are open… and especially here, but in many other regions, you can meet them again… brown bears.

Our big request in advance:
DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!
DO NOT ATTRACT BEARS!

BEARS are wild forest animals and not “objects of adventure”, please respect this during your trip and when you encounter one or more bears! Have fun, but stay in the car and keep going slowly.

There are around 8,000-10,000 brown bears living in the wild in Romania, and more and more bears are being attracted to roads and cities, the bears unfortunately getting food from some travelers and so they keep coming back on the roads, even with their cubs.

We understand, it’s quite an experience … but bears can also be dangerous and, more importantly, by feeding them, you are destroying the natural basis of life and perhaps even the life of animals … for a moment of attraction.

Therefore, please let the bears… be bears and show responsibility … Do not feed the bears and please do not stop when you see one or more bears by the roadside. This behavior will attract the bear because it thinks it has food. However, leaving your vehicle in such a situation to get a closer look at a bear should NEVER happen. Thank you!

A worth reading article on dealing with bears:
https://www.trentino.com/…/verhaltensregeln-bei…/

It should be noted that feeding bears in Romania has now become a punishable offense. Your vacation can end quickly and prematurely here!

INFO ROMÂNIA 2024 | Markets (weekly) in Romania | Pictures from a market in Galati

(10 June 2024)

In addition to the “typical German” shops like Lidl, Penny, Kaufland, DM and many others, there are many more shopping opportunities in Romania than in Germany and Austria.

The so-called “Grocers” in every village and almost on every street corner (comparable to the Edeka stores of 30 years ago) in the cities are open 7 days a week, many of them (especially in the cities) even 24/7.

Unlike in Germany and Austria, all supermarkets in Romania are also open every day (even on Sundays), usually from 7:00 to 22:00 or from 10:00 in shopping centers. Before public holidays or during school vacations, some supermarkets may even be open 7 days a week / 24 hours a day (e.g. the Carrefour supermarket chain in France).

But, back to the pictures, there are daily markets (called piata, comparable to German weekly markets, but seven times a week) all over the country, which also offer fresh produce (mostly fruits and vegetables, bakery products, but also many other products) fresh from the region and from neighboring or nearby countries (Turkey). One thing that makes Romania even more attractive for a vacation … Walking through the market every morning and buying fresh food for the day. Where else can you do that in German-speaking countries?

As for prices, the images are as of March 2023 in LEI (RON) (5 Lei / Ron corresponds to approx. 1 Euro)

Please note: Prices are in 2024 and have increased in some cases depending on the offer/season and, more importantly, vary greatly from region to region. The pictures shown are from Galați. The city is in a quiet location, directly on the Danube (800 meters wide and more) and at the beginning of the Danube Delta (bordering Ukraine). Current daytime temperatures, using this week (June 10-15, 2024) as an example: 27-35 degrees

INFO ROMÂNIA 2024 | Parking in Romanian cities

(10 June 2024)

Many tourists arrive with their own car or rent a car at the airport and are … a bit overwhelmed by the parking situation in Romania’s cities, so here are some tips and information.

Relaxed parking in Brăila
The city of Brăila is located in south-eastern Romania and has around 150,000 inhabitants. There is always plenty of parking in the center and …

Neighboring city Galati …
The city of Galati is also located in southeastern Romania and is the neighboring city of Brăila with about 300,000 inhabitants. In many parts of the city ( center, but also in the peripheral areas ) parking places are chargeable ( Monday to Saturday, every 8:00 – 20:00 clock ) Payment can be done via the parking machine on the website or via SMS ( Romanian phone number required ). IMPORTANT: On average, it takes only a short time to find a stylish yellow or orange immobilizer on the front wheel. Depending on the time of day, 200 or 300 lei ( about 40 or 60 euro ) are then due for removal.

Kronstadt ( Brasov ), take/plan time for your search
In the center or close to the center of Brasov ( Brasov ) is almost any time of the day it is not easy to find a parking place. There are few parking places and due to many restrictions ( single streets ) you may need to find a parking place. You really shouldn’t rush here! Parking spaces are subject to a fee ( Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am – 8:00 pm clock ) and can be via the parking machine on the website ( usually only one or two hours ) or. via the app ( also 24 hours/day ). Also, in Brasov there are paid parking spaces all over the city, so always pay attention to the appropriate signs.

Bucharest … without words
Parking in Bucharest is easy, either in the hotel parking lot or 20 km outside the city. Anyone who has ever been to Bucharest in their car will quickly notice … you need a lot of time, patience and also a certain serenity towards the driving style, which here is similar to some Italian cities. In many districts, downtown, shopping centers and many others, traffic is usually quite rough ( Navi: in 800 meters you reach your destination. Expected travel time: 48 minutes ) Parking is chargeable and can usually be paid on site, by SMS ( Roman phone number required ) or by app. Depending on the district ( old town ), it is very difficult or at extreme prices ( 300 lei ( 60 euro ) for 24 hours. On a “private parking lot” to find a parking space. Find a hotel with free parking and walk around or use a taxi / Uber or buses / metro, it’s worth it !
In the countryside and small towns

Here is almost always very relaxed, park, point. But please always take a look at any pointers ( usually near sights/destinations ). Can also be charged there.

More cities, experiences for parking in Romania are welcome as comments!

And on the side : RO Vignette …, to be able to use the highway, but also the country roads ( so it’s mandatory for every car ) you need a vignette. The Vignette ( RO Viniete ) can be bought and paid online ( German surface ) one month in advance ( so before your vacation ) Also the costs are manageable and ok. For a car, 3 euro for 7 days, 7 euro for 30 days, 13 euro for 90 days and / or 28 euro for a whole year. Rental cars already have this vignette, but still ask …

Here is the link: https://www.roviniete.ro/de/

INFORMATION ROMÂNIA 2024 | Traveling in / to Romania | Obligation of the day and more… !!!!!

(10 June 2024)

Please note that when traveling in and to Romania. As of July 01, 2023, lights have also become mandatory during daylight hours in cities as well as outside cities (previously only outside cities).

Please also note that you need a vignette for almost all roads outside cities (highways, but also country roads). The costs are not high, and the vignette can be bought in advance at many gas stations, but also online (at least one month before arrival) https://www.roviniete.ro.

You also need a vignette for traveling to and from Hungary (on the highway). Aceasta poate fi achiziționată, de asemenea, online (link ca mai sus). You can also purchase the Austrian vignette via https://asfinag.at or from gas stations in Germany / Hungary (and of course in Austria, only then it is probably too late). Please always keep/take the invoice with you, in Austria you can also check the receipt in addition to the vignette.

Please note the speed limits in Romania:
max. 50 km / cities
max. 90 km / country roads (even if Google Maps shows 100 km!!!)
max. 130 km / autostrăzi.

Even if other drivers (trucks!!!) drive faster in cities, please respect the speed limit. For safety reasons and to avoid fines.

Pedestrians ALWAYS have priority at zebra crossings (unless there are traffic lights). Please note!

Have a safe journey | Have a good road!

Corvin Castle / Fortress in Hunedoara

(10 June 2024)

Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Castle) is one of the most important non-church buildings in Transylvania.
The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th century fortification. Built and located in the south-western part of Hunedoara ( German name: Eisenmarkt ) in western Romania.

The listed castle bears many other names ( Corvin’s Castle, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle ) which can be traced in its location or its owners.

The Hungarian statesman and army leader Johann Hunyadi rebuilt an existing fortification after 1440 to become the ancestral castle of the Hunyadis. In the second phase of construction, the castle was extended in 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. In the 19th century, Prince Gabor Bethlen made further major changes to the building. As a result, the current castle has a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle has been in Austria since 1724 and has been in Romanian state ownership since 1918. Besides being an attraction for tourists, the castle is ( and has been used as a backdrop for a variety of Romanian and international movie productions. The castle now houses a museum.

Horezu Monastery | Valcea County (Part 2 of 2)

(9 June 2024)

The Horezi Monastery (also known as Hurezu Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of Romanian Orthodox nuns located in the historical region of Valahia Mica in Valcea.

https://discover-valcea.com

At the foot of Căpățânii, a mountain massif of the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romani de Jos, the monastery is located about three kilometers (air company) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of the nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian owls) that roost in the woods surrounding the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 Until 1862 it was a man’s monastery. After the monks were transferred to Bistri ta, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.

On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. Outside a smaller wall surrounded the whole monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by different buildings and in the east by a wall. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side of a belfry, armored with a solid wooden gate with steel. The monastery church of Sfin ti Impara ti Constantine and Helen built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape is 32 meters long and 32 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697 In the vestibule of the church there are some tombs, most beautifully equipped with marble and carved casing for Prince Brâncoveanu, but it did not fulfill its purpose and therefore was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and encased in gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was erected in 1697 The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

Castelul Mogosoaia | Near the city of București

(6 June 2024)

In the Ilfov district, a few kilometers northwest of Bucharest (Romania’s capital), Mogosoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogosoaia, in the municipality of Mogosoaia.

The castle contains a main courtyard and many buildings, such as the watchtower and the church “St. George” near the courtyard.

The Wallachian Prince Constantin Brancoveanu had the castle built between 1698 – 1702 on the estate of the widow Mogos (from which the name Mogosoaia was later derived) in the Brancoveanu style architecture named after him.
In 1714, when Constantin Brancoveanu and his entire family were executed in Constantinople, the Ottomans confiscated the entire family fortune and turned the palace into an inn (a kind of inn).

In the following decades, the castle was repeatedly conquered, destroyed and rebuilt, until it became the property of George III in 1912. Valentin Bibesco arrived, who was married to the French writer Marthe Bibesco of Romanian nobility. He gave the estate to his wife, and Marthe Bibesco restored the castle extensively.
