(30 June 2025)

Cârța Monastery (in German Kerz) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in Transylvania, Romania.

The exact founding date of Cârța Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A document from Konstanz dated April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built, and endowed with rights and privileges by his predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th to 15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the founding year of the monastery as around 1202–1203.

Near the village of Rosiori (about 15 km south of the city of Suceava) lies the Monastery of Saint Mina. The “Saint Mina” Monastery of Rosiori is an old-style Orthodox monks’ monastery, built in 1995.

Summer at the Black Sea / Beach

(24 June 2025)

Photos from past Augusts. It was hot, very hot (between 32 and 38 degrees, sometimes even more), and the water was wonderfully refreshing.

Our destination was once again Vama Veche , the southernmost spot on Romania’s Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the Bulgarian border. Even now, the weather is gradually warming up again, and we’re already dreaming of our summer holiday at the Black Sea

The Romanian seaside stretches for about 70 km and includes, besides Vama Veche, towns like Constanța, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Costinești, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia, and more. There are also long (and deserted) beaches in the Danube Delta region, between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe.

Vama Veche is mainly visited by a younger crowd, known as the party zone – Romania’s version of “Malle” – with around 3,000 to 4,000 visitors on weekends and loud music around the clock.

First of all, a beautiful and typically German word, “Dampflokomotivenmuseum” (in Romanian: Muzeul locomotivelor cu abur), but definitely a wonderful place here in Hermannstadt / Sibiu for all railway fans and those who want to become one.

The Steam Locomotive Museum is located opposite the main train station in Sibiu (in German: Hermannstadt) and consists of the former roundhouse and the turntable of the railway line. The exhibited locomotives were built between 1885 and 1959 in Romania and other countries such as Germany (Henschel & Sohn, Borsig, Schwartzkopff) and the United States (Baldwin Locomotive Works).

Mr. Roland Schmid sent us these photos. Thank you, dear Roland, we didn’t know about it until now and it really is something special.

The fortress of Brasov | Cetatea Brasovului

(21 June 2025)

The fortress of Brasov (in German Kronstadt) is a fortification built in the 15th century on Straja Hill (Castle Hill) to repel enemy attacks.

https://kronstadt-erleben.de | https://discover-brasov.com

Throughout its history, it has been attacked and rebuilt time and again, and was even an important point of defense during the First World War. Originally, there was only the fortress tower. From 1630-1631 the outer fortress was built. The horseshoe-shaped central tower has three floors and served several purposes over the centuries: it was used as a storehouse, was a prison for Turkish prisoners in the 18th century, and was also used as a fortress.

In the 18th century it was a prison for Turkish prisoners and later, during the plague, a special ward was set up for the sick.

A document from Konstanz, dated 17 April 1418 and issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built, and endowed with rights and privileges by his predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th to 15th centuries, analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, indicate the founding year around 1202–1203.

Viscri City and Fortified Church | Brasov County

(18 June 2025)

The village of Viscri (in German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, in Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in Brașov County in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town/citadel of Rupea and southeast of the city of Sighișoara. Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had about 700 inhabitants, mainly Transylvanian Saxons and a Romanian village section. Viscri is notable for its fortified church and the typical Saxon village layout.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1185. At the northwest end of the village stands the fortified church.

In the 12th century, before the German settlers arrived, the Székelys (a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here. In the 13th century, it was expanded. After the first Turkish incursions, the church was fortified in the 14th century, and a defensive wall with towers was built.

(16 June 2025)

Certainly one of the oldest monasteries in Romania is the Corbii de Piatra Monastery.

It is located in the village of Jgheaburi, Corbi commune, in Argeș County. It was built within a cave complex in 1512 during the reign of Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521).

The church of the monastery is carved into the rock (sandstone). Next to the church, also carved into the rock, is the monastery’s dining hall, a chamber that, according to tradition, was used by Neagoe Basarab as an open-air courtroom for public trials. The monastery is about 400 meters from the center of Corbi, on the left bank of the Doamnei River. The rock church itself was excavated into a massive rock wall about 30 meters high and 14.5 meters long.

His professional duties took him to Vienna in 1753, where he met the famous Empress Maria Teresa, who became his supporter and friend. He spent many years in the Viennese court and was governor of Transylvania between 1777 and 1787. He was the only Transylvanian Saxon to ever rule this country.

Master Mircea Codrea made for Brukenthal Palace a copy of Brukenthal’s portrait in the same size as the original, which can be seen in the Orangeria restaurant above the fireplace.

Transfagarasan / Transalpina OPEN | Bears in Romania !!

(6 June 2025)

Since both the Transfagarasan and the Transalpina are open from today, you will meet them again especially on these roads… the brown bears.

First of all, the MOST IMPORTANT:
DO NOT FEED BEARS!!
DO NOT ATTRACT BEARS!!
BEARS are wild animals of the forest and not “experience objects”, please respect this on your trip and when encountering one or more bears! Enjoy it, but stay in the car and just drive slowly.

In Romania, there are approximately 8,000 to 10,000 wild brown bears and more and more bears are attracted to the roads and towns, because, unfortunately, some drivers / travelers feed the bears and therefore they always return, but especially with their offspring, to the roads.

We understand, it is a special experience… but bears can also be very dangerous, especially a mother bear with her cute babies. Mothers know, with children the fun ends quickly and it can become very dangerous. Therefore, once again… PLEASE SHOW RESPONSIBILITY AND RESPECT for these animals.

By attracting or feeding them, you destroy the natural basis of life of the animals… for a moment of attraction. We therefore ask you to let the bears… be bears… do not feed the bears and please do not stop if you see one or more bears on the side of the road. By this behavior, you attract the bear, because it thinks it will get food. Leaving the vehicle in such a situation to see a bear closer should NEVER happen anyway. Thank you!

Below is a link to further rules of conduct, in case you encounter a bear (e.g. during a mountain hike). Here, the example is Trentino, but it is also valid for Romanian bears > https://www.trentino.com/de/freizeit-aktiv/berge-wandern/nuetzliche-informationen/verhaltensregeln-bei-baerenkontakt/

Károlyi Castle (Carei) | Satu Mare County

(6 June 2025)

Károlyi Castle is a neo-Gothic-Neo-Baroque palace complex in the town of Carei (Gross Karol in German, Nagykároly in Hungarian) in Satu Mare County in northwestern Romania. It was once the ancestral seat of the Hungarian noble family Károlyi von Nagykároly.

The castle with its gardens and museums is open to visitors and hosts several exhibitions.

Short history:
The origins of the castle are in a stone house built in 1482 by Láncz László Károlyi with the permission of King Matthias. Due to its strategic position, the fortress was part of the system of fortifications used against the Turks in the seventeenth century, after the expansion of the fortifications in 1661 and 1666.

This fortress was demolished by József Károlyi in 1794 to build a baroque castle designed by Joseph Bitthauser in its place. There were also several towers of different shapes and sizes. The inner courtyard was covered with a solid wood ceiling and thus transformed into a reception hall. A ditch was also built around the castle.

Cluj-Napoca | Impressions

(2 June 2025)

Pictures of Cluj-Napoca (in German Klausenburg, in Hungarian Kolozsvar) from June 29 and 30. The city is (probably*) the second largest city in Romania and the capital of Cluj County in Transylvania.

With a population of around 400,000, Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania region. There are universities, a lively nightlife and many buildings from the times of Hungarian and Saxon rule. Around the main square Piata Unirii are the Gothic St. Michael’s Church and an equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus, who lived in the 15th century. The baroque Banffy Palace is now a museum displaying Romanian art.

Summer is coming | Black Sea / Beach

(2 June 2025)

Pictures from August in previous years, which will soon be repeated. The sun is shining, it will get very hot, and the water is wonderfully fresh.

The Romanian seaside stretches for about 70 km and includes, besides Vama Veche, places like Constanta, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Costinesti, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia, and several others. There are also long (and deserted) beaches in the Danube Delta region, between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe. The total length of the Romanian Black Sea coast is about 280 kilometers.

Our destination (the pictures) was Vama Veche , the southernmost place on the Romanian Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the border with Bulgaria.

Vama Veche is mainly visited by a younger crowd; it is the party zone, the so-called “Malle” of Romania, with about 3,000 to 4,000 visitors on weekends and loud music around the clock.

June 1st, Children’s Day, is, as in many other countries around the world, also a public holiday in Romania and today is also a Sunday.
