Timisoara in the evening / at night | Gorgeous

(31 March 2026)

Pictures from mid-July 2025, in the evening, from Timisoara in western Romania.

A city full of life — it’s wonderful to stroll through the city at temperatures between 28°C (7 PM) and 22°C (midnight), stop for a coffee or a cool drink, or try an Indian chicken masala in coconut milk (our tip ) at one of the many restaurants, street cafés, or wine bars.

Peles Castle | Wonderful interior views

(31 March 2026)

Peles Castle is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the town of Sinaia, in Prahova County.

It was built between 1873 and 1883 at the request of King Carol I of Romania and was confiscated by the communist regime in 1947. After the Romanian Revolution in 1989, Peles was returned to the exiled former King Michael, who was living in Switzerland.

The bay windows and half-timbered walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the king’s homeland. The castle is surrounded by seven terraces. A part of the 160 rooms can now be visited. The castle museum houses weapons, sculptures, furniture, and decorative objects from the 15th to 19th centuries, as well as an orchestrion. The castle is particularly impressive for its magnificent woodwork.

Beautiful pictures of the castle from July / August 2024. We thank Mrs. Monika Simon for sending and granting permission to use these pictures.

Nicolae Romanescu Park in Craiova | Dolj County

(31 March 2026)

The construction of Nicolae Romanescu Park in the city of Craiova (Dolj County) was planned and initiated in 1898, following the election of Nicolae Romanescu as mayor.

The French architect commissioned for this project was Édouard Redont, who designed the park, which was built between 1898 and 1903.

The park is considered the largest natural park in Eastern Europe. It was designed in the romantic style, a synthesis of landscape architecture and painting.

Mogosoaia Castle | Near the city of Bucharest

(31 March 2026)

In Ilfov County, just a few kilometers northwest of Bucharest (the capital of Romania), lies Mogosoaia Palace on the banks of Mogosoaia Lake in the commune of Mogosoaia.

The palace complex includes a main courtyard and many buildings, such as the watchtower and the “St. George” church near the courtyard.

The Wallachian Prince Constantin Brancoveanu had the palace built between 1698 and 1702 on the estate of the widow Mogos (from which the later name Mogosoaia is derived) in the Brancoveanu architectural style named after him. In 1714, when Constantin Brancoveanu was executed in Constantinople with his entire family, the Ottomans confiscated all the family assets and converted the palace into a han (a type of inn).

In the following decades, the palace was conquered, destroyed, and rebuilt several times until it came into the possession of George III Valentin Bibesco in 1912, who was married to the French writer of Romanian noble descent, Marthe Bibesco. He gave the estate to his wife, and Marthe Bibesco subsequently had the palace extensively restored.

Făgăraș Fortress | Brașov County

(30 March 2026)

On the way from Sibiu to Brașov lies the town of Făgăraș. At the end of the 12th century the town’s fortress was only a wooden fortification, which was expanded into a stone fortress in the 14th century.

The fortress houses a museum, which—like the fortress itself—can be visited. Directly next to the fortress is the cathedral / church Sfantul Ioan Botezatorul.

Festivals, events, and food in Romania

(29 March 2026)

Food is, above all … hearty Romanian dishes are meat-heavy, rich, mostly prepared with plenty of oil and spices, and accompanied by many sour and pickled vegetables.

To finish, for dessert, there are sweets. Papanasi, clatite cu inghetata (pancakes with ice cream), prajitura (cakes / slices of all kinds) and much more … Romania is famous for these as well.

Targoviste | Dambovita County

(28 March 2026)

The city of Targoviste (in German Tergowiste or Tergowisch) is the county seat of Dambovita County and the former capital of the historical region of Wallachia.

The first known mention of the city was in 1396 by the Bavarian crusader Johannes Schiltberger.

In Targoviste, Vlad III Draculea was enthroned in 1456*. In 1499, the Wallachian ruler Radu cel Mare (Radu the Great) rebuilt the hill church of Saint Nicolae, but it was only in 1514, under the rule of Neagoe Basarab, that the church was consecrated. Today it is known as Dealu Monastery.

Prince Matei Basarab (1632–1654) restored the city wall, renovated the old churches, and built several new places of worship. Until 1659, Targoviste was the capital of Wallachia and remained a princely residence until 1714.

(26 March 2026)

The Church of St. George is located at Strada Cavafii Vechi 6, at the “Kilometer 0” of Romania (regarding the distance indications to Bucharest) and east of the Old Town of Bucharest.

As early as 1574, the Frenchman Pierre Lescalopier, when traveling through Bucharest, testified that there were two beautiful and holy places in the city center, one of which was the St. George Church. Thus, the church is one of the oldest in the city.

It is a beautiful church in the middle of the city. In front of the church, you can find a bell with the German inscription: “Mich goss Johann Freisinger Glockengiesser in Wien 1856”.

Cârța Monastery in Transylvania | Sibiu County

(24 March 2026)

The Cârța Monastery (German: Kerz) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in Transylvania, Romania.

It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, almost exactly halfway between the cities of Sibiu and Fagaras, and is today an Evangelical-Lutheran church.

The exact founding date of the Cârța Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A Constance charter dated April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, states vaguely that the monastery was founded, built, and endowed with rights and privileges by his predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th to 15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the founding year of the monastery as being around 1202–1203.

Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania region. The city has universities, a vibrant nightlife, and many buildings from the times of Hungarian and Saxon rule. Around the main square, Piata Unirii, are the Gothic St. Michael’s Church and an equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus, who lived in the 15th century. The baroque Banffy Palace is now a museum displaying Romanian art.

Manastirea Hurezi (Horezu Monastery) | Valcea County

(22 March 2026)

Horezu Monastery (also known as Hurezi Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox nunnery located in the historical region of Valahia Mică in Vâlcea.

At the foot of the Căpățânii mountains, a massive mountain range of the Transylvanian Alps, on the territory of the Romani de Jos village, the monastery is located about three kilometers (airline) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian huhurezi) that live in the surrounding forests of the monastery probably gave the name of the place. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 until 1862 it was a human monastery. After the monks were transferred to your Bistrita, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.

On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The exterior of a smaller wall surrounded the entire estate of the monastery with its hermits. The second consists of three parts of different buildings and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is in the south part of a bell tower, armored with a solid wooden steel gate. The church of the monastery of Saints Emperors Constantine and Helen, built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape, is 32 meters long and was built between 1693 and 1697. Brâncoveanu, however, did not fulfill its purpose and, therefore, was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and wrapped in gold.

The square chapel with octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was erected in 1697. The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

Life in the countryside is very different from life in the cities. It is characterized by family, hospitality, traditions, hardships, and hard work well into old age.

Poenari Fortress | The true home of VLAD III

(20 March 2026)

Pictures from the day before yesterday of the medieval hilltop fortress / Poenari Fortress. Today it is only partially preserved and is located in Arges County, in Greater Wallachia.

At the beginning of the 13th century, the rulers of Wallachia built the fortress. The legendary founder of Wallachia, Prince Rudolf Bessaraba the Black (Romanian: Radu Negru Vodă), is mentioned as the builder.

In the 15th century, Vlad III recognized the strategic importance of this hilltop fortress and ordered its repair and reinforcement using forced labor. He also made it one of his most important fortresses. In June 1462, Vlad III Drăculea fled from Tatars and Turks under Sultan Mehmed II to the fortress but managed to escape his enemies, who discovered his remote hideout and bombarded it from the neighboring mountain, through a war stratagem. Until 1529, the fortress remained a stronghold for Wallachian and Transylvanian princes.

(17 March 2026)

Mud volcanoes (Roman: Muddy volcanoes) are located in the municipality of Berca in the district of Buzău.

In 1924, the area of 30 km ² was declared a nature reserve. The main attraction of the reservation are the small mud volcanoes that have a height of a few centimeters / meters, which is cold volcanism. Volcanoes are made of gases that rise from about 3,000 m deep through layers of clay and contain water. At the surface of the earth, the mud dries up and forms structures that resemble a volcano.

Premium wine tours to Romania 2026

(17 March 2026)

Discover Romanian grape varieties, some of which have a history of over 2,000 years. The elegance and authenticity of these wines will surprise and delight you.

https://www.karpaten-offroad.de/…/premium-wein-reise…/

The mountains of Transylvania, thanks to their climatic conditions, reveal excellent white wines with fine acidity, refreshing taste, and delicate fruity aromas worthy of the legends of this region in the Carpathian arc.

The south of Romania, with its centuries-old tradition of viticulture, also delights us with its mostly untouched, Tuscan-Mediterranean-like landscapes. The purity of nature, the simplicity of the villages, and the uniqueness of the red wine varieties tell the story of a country and its virgin, in part still completely undiscovered, nature.

Shoemakers’ Tower in Sighisoara (Schäßburg) | Mures County

(16 March 2026)

The Shoemakers’ Tower, first mentioned in documents in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 after the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prism with unequal sides.

The jagged roof with two observation turrets on the south and north sides gives it a special appearance. From this tower comes the stone plaque with the city’s oldest coat of arms and the motto “Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (translated: The name of the Lord is the strongest fortress), which is kept in the History Museum in the Turnul cu Ceas (Clock Tower) in the city of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg).

After the Second World War, the appearance of the tower underwent some changes. The windows were widened and the entrance was altered, and the external staircase was added in later years.

Interestingly, the “interior paintings” are not paintings but mosaics. Pictures of the interior views by Mr. Rada, thank you very much for these.

The total area of the complex, located in the center of Bucharest and in the direct vicinity of the Parliament building, covers nearly 36,900 m2. The cathedral / complex was started / planned in 2009 and will be more or less finished (including all additional buildings) in a few years.

Viscri City and Fortified Church | Brasov County

(11 March 2026)

The village of Viscri (in German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, in Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in Brașov County in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town/citadel of Rupea and southeast of the city of Sighișoara. Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had about 700 inhabitants, mainly Transylvanian Saxons and a Romanian village section. Viscri is notable for its fortified church and the typical Saxon village layout.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1185. At the northwest end of the village stands the fortified church.

In the 12th century, before the German settlers arrived, the Székelys (a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here. In the 13th century, it was expanded. After the first Turkish incursions, the church was fortified in the 14th century, and a defensive wall with towers was built.

The oldest traces of a settlement in the current urban area of Poiana Cireșului (“cherry meadow”) date from the Mesolithic era (about 12,000 BC).

The city was founded at the end of the 14th century under the name of Christmas Stone. After the establishment of a royal court by Stephen the Great, Prince of Moldavia (1433-1504), it was transformed into a famous center of arts and crafts. The nearby town of Târgu Neamț was the center of a colony of German-speaking settlers from the Middle Ages, hence the name: Neamț is an outdated Romanian term for “German”.

Moldavian Monasteries | Bukovina (Bucovina) in northeastern Romania

(3 March 2026)

The monasteries of Bukovina, designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and known as the Moldavian Monasteries, are located in Suceava County in northeastern Romania. They were built in the 15th and 16th centuries in the former Principality of Moldavia by Stephen the Great and his successors.

The monasteries are famous for their magnificent frescoes. This colorful painting, unique in Europe, dates back to the inhabitants of the monasteries. The monks wanted to bring the contents of the Holy Scriptures closer to the “ordinary” people, who could neither read nor write. Thus, they used the interior walls, facades, and protective walls of the monastery to depict scenes and parables from the Bible in colorful drawings, paintings, and frescoes. These are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.

Many of the buildings are attributed to Stephen the Great, who supposedly founded a monastery for every battle won. Eight of the monasteries are listed as World Heritage Sites.

Historical documents confirm that the ancestors of today’s horse population in the Danube Delta arrived there 300 to 400 years ago, brought by the Tatars. They settled there, gradually adapting to the environment, and became increasingly feral.

In the northeastern Delta (Tulcea County), between the Chilia and Sulina branches, lies the village and forest of Letea (Romanian: Pădurea Letea), covering an area of over 5,000 hectares (50,000,000 m²). This is Europe’s northernmost subtropical forest, Romania’s oldest nature reserve, and home to these horses.

(1 March 2026)

The History Museum of the city and county of Brașov (Kronstadt) was founded in 1950 and is located in the former parish hall in the center of the Council Square (square) or partly in the Weavers’ Bastion in Brașov (Kronstadt).

The bastion, defended and maintained by the linen weavers’ guild, was built in two stages between 1421-1436 and 1570-1573. In the first phase, the first two levels of the three battle galleries were built. The upper galleries, built between 1570 and 1573, were intended for small arms that could be used through narrow, circular bullet holes throughout the galleries. Two guard towers were built, which monitored the city both militarily and in terms of possible fires.

After the restoration, the weavers’ bastion was transformed into a museum.

March 1: “Mărțișorul”

(1 March 2026)

The Mărțișor is a typical gift given on March 1st in Romania. It consists of a red-and-white string, usually with a small pendant, and is attached to clothing.

This symbol of spring was originally worn by women and children. The two colors (red and white) represent snow and the sun.

Today, mainly women receive Mărțișor charms, with lucky pendants attached. As soon as a blooming tree is spotted, the Mărțișor is thrown onto its branches, and a wish is made!
