Schloss Cantacuzino | Wednesday Nevermore Academy filming location

(31 May 2024)

The Cantacuzino Castle was not only the filming location for the “Nevermore Academy” Wednesday series, but it is also one of the most beautiful and important historical buildings / castles in Romania.

Almost there! Summer at the Black Sea / Beach (Part 2 of 2)

(31 May 2024)

Now it’s already in the 30s and even higher in June. Pictures from August earlier this year. It was hot, very hot (32-38 degrees and sometimes even more) and the water was wonderfully fresh.

Our destination was again Vama Veche, the southernmost town on the Romanian Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the Bulgarian border. It is slowly warming up again (30 degrees on April 1) and we are already dreaming of a summer vacation on the Black Sea.

The Romanian seaside stretches for about 70 kilometers and, in addition to Vama Veche, includes Constanța, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Constinești, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia and several others. There are also long (and secluded) beaches in the Danube Delta region between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe.

Vama Veche is mainly visited by a younger crowd, it’s the party kilometer, so to say, the “Shore” of Romania, with about 3 – 4,000 visitors on weekends and non-stop loud music.

Fortified Church of Biertan

(31 May 2024)

The church is located in the municipality of Biertan in Sibiu county in Transylvania. Biertan is one of the first German-Saxon settlements and was mentioned in a document in 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like any Saxon settlement, it is characterized by a string of villages around a central square, above which rises the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (Episcopal See of the Evangelical Church A.B.), which fostered the building of one of the largest farming communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania that is definitely worth a visit.

Peles Castle | Wonderful sights | Prahova county

(30 May 2024)

Peles Castle is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the town of Sinaia, Prahova County.

It was built between 1873 and 1883 by order of King Carol I of Romania and confiscated by the communist regime in 1947. After the Romanian Revolution in 1989, Peles was transferred to Swiss exile, the former King Michael.

The bay windows and half-timbered walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the home of the king. Some of the 160 rooms are now open to the public, and the castle museum contains weapons, sculptures, furniture and decorative objects from the 15th-19th century, as well as an orchestra. The castle impresses with its magnificent wood craftsmanship.

(30 May 2025)

The mud volcanoes (Roman: Volcani Noroioși) are located in the municipality of Berca in the district of Buzău. In 1924, the 30 km² area was declared a nature reserve.

The main attraction of the reserve are the small mud volcanoes that have a height of a few centimeters/meters, which is cold volcanism. The volcanoes are formed by gases rising from about 3,000 m down through layers of clay and containing water. At the earth’s surface, the mud dries and forms volcano-like structures.

Country | From the country

(22 May 2024)

Country life is very different from life in the cities. It’s characterized by family, hospitality, traditions, hardship and hard work into old age.

And … it’s often a happier life than we think. Those who have little have little to worry about, and the many daily messages from the world that we receive every hour on our phones (and which we don’t really need) reach these people less often or perhaps not at all.

Thanks to photographer Sorin Onisor ( facebook.com/sorinonisor ) for permission to use these atmospheric images.

“The Happy Cemetery” in Săpânța

(19 May 2024)

Just 18 km west of Sighetu Marmației is the “Happy Cemetery”, one of the most visited attractions in the Maramureș region.

The crosses, which were painted by local craftsmen, are bright and predominantly blue in color.

The idea for the cemetery came from woodcarver Stan Ioan Patras in 1935. He wanted to establish a cemetery, unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has an image carved on the top, representing a special moment in the life of the deceased. Below, humorous poems, short poems or rhymed texts describe the life of the person buried there.

Parliament Palace in Bucharest

(18 May 2024)

The “People’s House” is a myth. At 360,000 square meters, it is not only the second largest building in the world (after the Pentagon in Washington), it is also number 1 in the Guinness Book of World Records for its total weight.

Among other things, 1,000,000 cubic meters of marble, 3,500 tons of crystal, 700,000 tons of steel and bronze, 900,000 cubic meters of wood and 200,000 square meters of carpet were processed. The palace has about 1,000 rooms, countless halls, corridors, corridors, staircases and 40 elevators.

The building which dates back to the time of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu is – whether you think this “building style” is good or not – definitely worth a visit.

For hiking: sturdy footwear is highly recommended. Here and there, you’ll go over tree trunks, small wooden bridges and loose stones, or you’ll walk directly in the stream bed or on a gravel path. You should definitely take something to drink with you.

The Museum of History of the City and County of Brasov (Kronstadt) was founded in 1950 and is located in the former parish hall in the center of the square of the Council Square or partially in the bastion of the Weavers of Brasov (Kronstadt).

The bastion, defended and maintained by the linen weavers’ guild, was built in two stages between 1421-1436 and 1570-1573. In the first phase, the first two levels of the three battle galleries were built. The upper galleries, built between 1570 and 1573, were intended for small caliber weapons that could be used through narrow, circular bullet holes throughout the galleries. Two watchtowers were built for the guard, who monitored the town both from a military point of view and from the point of view of observing possible fires.

After restoration, the Weavers’ Bastion was turned into a museum.

Hermannstadt (Sibiu) in Transylvania

(13 May 2024)

Hermannstadt (Sibiu in Romanian, Nagyszeben in Hungarian and Hermestatt in Sieburg-Saxon) is a town in the geographical region of Seiburg and was/is one of the centers of the Seven Citizens of Saxony.

Probably in 1147 the first German settlers arrived in the area; they settled on the hill above the river Zibin, today’s Oberstadt. The first documented mention of the town dates back to 1191 as praepositum Cibiniensem; a fool appeared. From 1223 the Latin name is “Villa Hermannni” and from 1241 the German equivalent is Hermannstorf.

In the 14s. Century, Hermannstadt developed into a commercial center of international importance. It was one of the most important towns in Transylvania – perhaps even the most important, as it was not only the center of trade, administration and the church, but also the largest fortress in the whole of Transylvania.

Hurezi Monastery (Horezu Monastery) | Valcea county

(11 May 2024)

Horezu Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of nuns located in the historical region of Muntenia Mică, in Valcea county.

https://discover-valcea.com

Located at the foot of the Căpățânii Mountains, a mountain massif in the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romanii de Jos, the monastery is about three kilometers (in a straight line) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (huhurezi in Romanian) nesting in the woods around the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then Prince of Muntenia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and completed in 1709. It was a men’s monastery until 1862. After the monks were transferred to Bistrița, nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is a listed building.

Located on a hill, the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The smaller outer wall surrounds the entire monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by buildings of different heights and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side through a bell tower with a massive wooden gate armored with steel. The monastery church of Saints Constantine and Helen in the center of the complex is 32 meters long, 14 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697. There are several tombs in the vestibule of the church, the most beautiful of which is decorated with marble and has a carved lid, intended for Prince Brâncoveanu, but which never served its purpose and was therefore never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and covered with gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side, opposite the entrance to the church, and was built in 1697. The frescoes in the chapel were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

Worth knowing: Sibiu (Hermannstadt) in Transylvania

(11 May 2024)

The coat of arms of Sibiu dates back to the 13th century.

The coat of arms consists of an ancient shield with a red glazed field. Within this field are two silver swords with a golden fist and cross, forming a cross of St. Andrew, pointing towards the base of the shield. The swords bear an open lamellar crown Or. A triangle consisting of three sea leaves (water lilies) and three stalks encircles the sword-blades, and on the shield a stone crown with seven silver towers is enthroned Siebenburgen / Transylvania.

In medieval heraldry, these swords on a blood-red background symbolize the right to impose the death penalty: Jus Gladii Minus and Jus Gladii Majus.

Fortified Church from Biertan | Sibiu county

(8 May 2024)

This church/fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (Biertan in German, Berethalom in Hungarian) in the district of Sibiu in Transylvania.

Biertan is one of the earliest German-Saxon settlements and was mentioned in documents as early as 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like any Saxon settlement, it is characterized by a row of houses built around a central square, above which rises the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal see of the Evangelical Church A.B.), which fostered the building of one of the largest agricultural communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure of Romania, definitely worth a visit.

The village of Dedrad, or Deutsch-Zepling in German, is located in the county of Mures in northern Transylvania.

Until 1944, the village was mainly inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons, who were forced to flee westwards as a result of the Second World War. Some returned in 1945. Kerz Monastery in Transylvania | Sibiu county

(7 May 2024)

Carta Monastery (Kerz in German) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in Transylvania, Romania.

It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, almost exactly halfway between the cities of Sibiu and Făgăraș, and is now an Evangelical Lutheran church.

The exact date of the foundation of the Carta Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A document from Constanta, dated April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built and granted rights and privileges by its predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th-15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the year of the foundation of the monastery as around 1202-1203.

(6 May 2024 / Images: August 2021)

Piatra Neamț is the capital of Neamț county in northeastern Romania.

The city is located in the historical region of Western Moldavia, on the terraces on the left bank of the Bistrița (Bistritz) surrounded by the foothills of the Eastern Carpathians, the mountains Pietricica, Cozla, Cernegura and Bâtca Doamnei. The oldest traces of a settlement in the present-day urban area of Poiana Cireșului (‘cherry meadow’) date back to the Mesolithic era (around 12,000 BC).

The town was founded in the late 14th century under the name Piatra lui Crăciun. After the establishment of a royal court by Stephen the Great, Prince of Moldavia (1433-1504), it developed into a renowned center of arts and crafts. The nearby town of Târgu Neamț was the center of a colony of German-speaking settlers in the Middle Ages, hence the name: Neamț is an obsolete Romanian term for “German”.

If you travel on the road (E671) from Timișoara to Arad, you will pass the commune of Vinga (Theresiopolis in German) about 25 km before Arad.

The two churches are very large for such a small community. The Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church, on the left in the picture) and the Roman Catholic Church (Catholic Church, on the right in the picture and in other pictures).

The first documentary mention of Vinga dates back to 1231. After it was sacked and destroyed by the Turks, Vinga was resettled in 1737 and 1741 by about 125 families of “Bulgarian-Bavarians” from Cyprovts in western Bulgaria, who crossed the Danube and settled in different parts of the Banat Plain. On August 1, 1744, Vinga received the status of a town with a magistrate and various privileges from Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.

The Fortress of Brasov (in German Kronstadt) is a fortification built in the 15th century on Straja Hill (Castle Hill) to repel enemy attacks.

https://kronstadt-erleben.de | https://discover-brasov.com

Throughout its history, it has been attacked and rebuilt again and again, and was even an important defensive point during the First World War. Originally, there was only the fortress tower. The outer fortress was built between 1630-1631. The horseshoe-shaped central tower has three floors and has served several purposes over the centuries: it was used as a storehouse, a prison for Turkish prisoners in the 18th century and a fortress.

Later, during the plague, a special ward was set up for the sick.

The castle with its gardens and museums is open to visitors and hosts several exhibitions.

Brief history:
The origins of the castle lie in a stone house built in 1482 by Láncz László Károlyi Károlyi with the permission of King Matthias. Because of its strategic position, the fortress was part of the fortification system used against the Turks in the 17th century, after the fortifications were extended in 1661 and 1666.

This fortress was demolished by József Károlyi in 1794 to build a Baroque-style castle designed by Joseph Bitthauser in its place. There were also several towers of various shapes and sizes. The inner courtyard was covered with a solid wooden ceiling and thus transformed into a reception hall. A moat was also built around the castle.

(3 May 2024)

Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter this weekend in early May.

In many areas of Romania, especially in Transylvania, eggs are colored with onion shells and small flowers and/or leaves are placed on top to create interesting patterns. In Bucovina (Bukovina), Easter eggs are made using a special technique, each one a small work of art.

Thanks to Mr. Frank Schleßmann for sending us these beautiful pictures and the corresponding text/explanation.

Holiday 2024 | Bears on the Transfăgărășan and in Romania!!!

(2 May 2024)

Transfagarașanul has been open again since the end of June and so you can meet him again …

Our big request:
NO NO NO FOOD!
NO ATTENTION!
BEARS are wild forest animals and do not have “experience objects”, please respect this on your journey on this trail!

There are approx. 8,000 to 10,000 wild brown bears in Romania and more and more are attracting many bears towards the streets and places, as the bears unfortunately get food from some travelers and therefore come back again and again with their own offspring.

We understand that it is a special experience…but bears can also be dangerous and especially with feeding you are destroying the animals natural life base…for a moment of attraction.

Therefore, please let bears … Bear bear bear bear bear bear bear bear bear bear bear bear bear bear bear bear … By this behavior you attract the bear while he thinks he’s getting food. Leaving your vehicle in such a situation to see a bear up close should NEVER EVER happen. Thank you!

Holidays | Parking in Romanian cities

(2 May 2024)

Many tourists arrive with their own car or rent a car at the airport and are … a bit overwhelmed by the parking situation in Romania’s cities, so here are some tips and information.

Relaxed parking in Brăila
The city of Brăila is located in south-eastern Romania and has around 150,000 inhabitants. There is always plenty of parking in the center and …

Neighboring city Galati …
The city of Galati is also located in southeastern Romania and is the neighboring city of Brăila with about 300,000 inhabitants. In many parts of the city ( center, but also in the peripheral areas ) parking places are chargeable ( Monday to Saturday, every 8:00 – 20:00 clock ) Payment can be done via the parking machine on the website or via SMS ( Romanian phone number required ). IMPORTANT: On average, it takes only a short time to find a stylish yellow or orange immobilizer on the front wheel. Depending on the time of day, 200 or 300 lei ( about 40 or 60 euros ) are then due for removal.

In the center or close to the center of Brasov ( Brasov ) is almost any time of the day it is not easy to find a parking place. There are few parking places and due to many restrictions ( single streets ) you may need to find a parking place. You really shouldn’t rush here! Parking spaces are subject to a fee ( Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am – 8:00 pm clock ) and can be via the parking machine on the website ( usually only one or two hours ) or. via the app ( also 24 hours/day ). Also, in Brasov there are paid parking spaces all over the city, so always pay attention to the appropriate signs.

Bucharest … without words!
Parking in Bucharest is easy, either in the hotel parking lot or 20 km outside the city. Anyone who has ever been with his car in Bucharest, will quickly notice … you need a lot of time, patience and also a certain serenity towards the driving style, which here is similar to some Italian cities. In many districts, downtown, shopping centers and many others, the traffic is usually quite rough ( Navi: in 800 meters you reach your destination. Expected travel time: 48 minutes ) Parking is chargeable and can usually be paid on site, by SMS ( Roman phone number required ) or by app. Depending on the district ( old town ), it is very difficult or at extreme prices ( 300 lei ( 60 euro ) for 24 hours. On a “private parking lot” to find a parking space. Find a hotel with free parking and walk around or use a taxi / Uber or buses / metro, it’s worth it !

In the countryside and small towns

Here it is almost always very relaxed, park, period. But please always take a look at any pointers ( usually near sights/destinations ). Can also be charged there.

More cities, experiences for parking in Romania are welcome as comments!

On the subject of vignettes, mandatory daytime running lights, speed limits and more… please read the previous post.

Traveling in / to Romania | Mandatory daytime running lights | Vignette and more … !!!!!

(2 May 2024)

Our tip: if you stay in Romania for more than 14 days, buy two 7-day vignettes and ask for the second vignette to be “pre-punched” with the date of your return trip (at the gas stations, otherwise enter the relevant data online). This way you are already prepared. Please always keep/take the invoice with you, in Austria, in addition to the vignette, the receipt can also be checked.
According to the previous information

Please note the speed limits in Romania:
max. 50 km / cities
max. 90 km / country roads
max. 130 km / highways

Even if other drivers (trucks!!!!) drive faster in towns and cities, respect the speed limit. For safety reasons, but also to avoid fines or driving bans (the Romanian police may impose a driving ban for a certain period in Romania in addition to a fine, depending on your misbehavior).

Pedestrians ALWAYS have priority at zebra crossings (unless there are traffic lights). This is sometimes complicated because there can be both a zebra crossing and traffic lights. If the traffic lights are closed, the pedestrian crossing has priority, if not… the traffic lights. Please be extra careful and attentive here.

Have a safe journey. Have a good trip.

Hurezi Monastery (Horezu Monastery) | Valcea county

(1 May 2024)

The Horezi Monastery (also known as Hurezu Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of Romanian Orthodox nuns located in the historical region of Valahia Mica in Valcea.

At the foot of Căpățânii Mountain, a mountain massif of the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romani de Jos, the monastery is located about three kilometers (air company) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of the nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian owls) that roost in the woods surrounding the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 Until 1862 it was a man’s monastery. After the monks were transferred to Bistri ta, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.

On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. Outside a smaller wall surrounded the whole monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by different buildings and in the east by a wall. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side of a belfry, armored with a solid wooden gate with steel. The monastery church of Sfin ti Impara ti Constantine and Helen built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape is 32 meters long and 32 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697 In the vestibule of the church there are some tombs, most beautifully equipped with marble and carved casing for Prince Brâncoveanu, but it did not fulfill its purpose and therefore was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and encased in gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was erected in 1697 The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.
