Brasov County Museum of History | Bastionul Tesatorilor

The Museum of History of the City and County of Brasov (Kronstadt) was founded in 1950 and is located in the former parish hall in the center of the square of the Council Square or partially in the bastion of the Weavers of Brasov (Kronstadt).

The bastion, defended and maintained by the linen weavers’ guild, was built in two stages between 1421-1436 and 1570-1573. In the first phase, the first two levels of the three battle galleries were built. The upper galleries, built between 1570 and 1573, were intended for small caliber weapons that could be used through narrow, circular bullet holes throughout the galleries. Two watchtowers were built for the guard, who monitored the town both from a military point of view and from the point of view of observing possible fires.

After restoration, the Weavers’ Bastion was turned into a museum.

Iulia Hasdeu Castle | Prahova county

(24 November 2024)

Iulia Hasdeu Castle is located in the small town of Câmpina, Prahova County.

Iulia Hasdeu Castle was built by the historian and politician Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu as a small fortress. Work began in 1893, after Hasdeu’s daughter, Iulia Hasdeu, died at the age of 19, an event that deeply shook his life. He claimed that his deceased daughter provided him with the plans for the castle’s construction during séances. The building was completed in 1896.

The stories say that this castle is deeply frightening. There are specially designed rooms for spiritualist rituals, complete with seating for spirits. Many say that Hasdeu (the father) did not build the castle to commemorate his daughter Iulia, but to worship Satan. Others claim to have seen Julia’s ghost, who haunts the castle to this day, dressed in white and adorned with daisies.

Since 1994, Iulia Hasdeu Castle houses the Memorial Museum “B.P. Hasdeu”, which exhibits the furniture and personal belongings of the Hasdeu family, including photographs, original documents, manuscripts, reviews written by Hasdeu and paintings by Nicolae Grigorescu and Sava Henția.

Our advice: Hiking Macinului Mountains | Vraju Peak | Tulcea county

(14 November 2024)

At the beginning of September, cross the new bridge from Brăila over the Danube, continue for about 15 km to Macin and continue straight ahead for about 500 meters after you reach the end of the village.

Then turn left from the main road to the Izvorul Tămăduirii Monastery (also Macin Monastery) and as soon as you turn left again to the monastery, park on the right and walk to the right … into the Macin mountains.

Butterflies, lizards, a tortoise and lots and lots of nature all the way to the Vraju peak, (probably) the highest point in the mountain range, 335 meters above sea level. A marvelous view of the monastery and its surroundings towards the Danube Delta, Brăila and Galați, including the new bridge over the Danube, rewards the ascent in the afternoon, when it is still around 28 degrees.

Duration of the ascent/ descent hike: 4 hours, the last 30-45 minutes of which are rockier and therefore good footwear is a must. The hiking trails are well signed and easy to follow/find.

At the beginning of the 17th century, Prince Gabor Bethlen carried out another major remodeling of the building. As a result, today’s castle is a mixture of different architectural styles.

The first documentary mention of Vinga dates back to 1231. After it was sacked and destroyed by the Turks, Vinga was resettled in 1737 and 1741 by about 125 families of “Bulgarian-Bavarians” from Cyprovts in western Bulgaria, who crossed the Danube and settled in different parts of the Banat Plain. On August 1, 1744, Vinga received the status of a town with a magistrate and various privileges from Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.

Die Küche Rumäniens …. lecker

(10 November 2024)

Monastery of Horezu | Valcea county

(10 November 2024)

The Horezi Monastery (also known as Hurezu Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of Romanian Orthodox nuns located in the historical region of Valahia Mica in Valcea.

https://discover-valcea.com

At the foot of Căpățânii, a mountain massif of the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romani de Jos, the monastery is located about three kilometers (air company) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of the nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian owls) that roost in the woods surrounding the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then Prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 Until 1862 it was a man’s monastery. After the monks were transferred to Bistri ta, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.

On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. Outside a smaller wall surrounded the whole monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by different buildings and in the east by a wall. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side of a belfry, armored with a solid wooden gate with steel. The monastery church of Sfin ti Impara ti Constantine and Helen built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape is 32 meters long and 32 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697 In the vestibule of the church there are some tombs, most beautifully equipped with marble and carved casing for Prince Brâncoveanu, but it did not fulfill its purpose and therefore was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and encased in gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was erected in 1697 The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

According to historians, the site originally housed a Dacian temple dedicated to the god Zamolxis, later transformed into a Roman temple to the god Mars. The origins of the church date back to the 4th century and it is considered to be the oldest church in Romania and South-East Europe.

Biertan | village and fortified church | Sibiu county

(7 November 2024)

The church / fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (Biertan in German, Berethalom in Hungarian) in the district of Sibiu in Transylvania.

Like any Saxon settlement, it is characterized by a row of houses built around a central square, above which rises the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal see of the Evangelical Church A.B.), which fostered the building of one of the largest agricultural communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure of Romania, definitely worth a visit.

Hurezi Monastery (Horezu Monastery) | Valcea county

(3 November 2024)

Horezu Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of nuns located in the historical region of Muntenia Mică, in Valcea county.

https://xn--urlaub-in-rumnien-2qb.de/ro/uir/de-vizitat-locatii-de-vizitat-manastirea-horezu/

Aflată la poalele Munților Căpățânii, un masiv muntos din Alpii Transilvaniei, pe teritoriul satului Romanii de Jos, mănăstirea se află la aproximativ trei kilometri (în linie dreaptă) la nord de orășelul Horezu.

SThe trills of the nocturnal birds of prey (huhurezi in Romanian) that nested in the woods around the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then Prince of Muntenia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and completed in 1709. It was a men’s monastery until 1862. After the monks were transferred to Bistrița, nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is a listed building.

Situated on a hill, the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The smaller outer wall encloses the entire monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by buildings of different heights and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side through a bell tower with a massive wooden gate armored with steel. The monastery church of Saints Constantine and Helen in the center of the complex is 32 meters long, 14 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697. There are several tombs in the vestibule of the church, the most beautiful of which is decorated with marble and has a carved lid, intended for Prince Brâncoveanu, but which never served its purpose and was therefore never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and covered with gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side, opposite the entrance to the church, and was built in 1697. The frescoes in the chapel were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.
