From 1920-1947 it was the royal residence of King Ferdinand I and his wife Queen Maria or their daughter Princess Ileana, who inherited the castle from her mother in 1938 Today the castle is owned by the Habsburg family, which was given back to the Romanian state during the succession in 2006.

Count Dracula invites you to Halloween in Transylvania

(30 October 2022)

The night of October 31 to November 1 is Halloween. A custom that originally spread mainly in Catholic Ireland, it was cultivated and expanded by Irish immigrants to the US and has been found in Europe in American-American form since around 1990.

Transylvania, especially here Törzburg (Bran Castle), became known around the world through Irish writer Bram Stoker’s 1897 book “Dracula”. The hero and ‘Dracula’ of the book and many movie adaptations is Vlad III, the ruler of the Principality of Wallachia (1448, 1456-1462 and 1476, born probably around 1431 in Schäßburg (in Romanian Sighisoara)). Thanks to his father Vlad II, he was nicknamed Draculea (in English ‘Son of the Dragon’), which probably inspired the author of the book to call it ‘Dracula’.

And according to current press reports, Elon Musk, Tesla founder Elon Musk, Angelina Jolie and other famous people and actors are now expected to go to Bran Castle in Romania for Halloween. You should be prepared if you’re around (picture garlic: we recommend eating it fresh a few hours before your visit and also wearing it as a necklace around your neck).

Happy Halloween everyone!

Fortified Churches in Transylvania – Pretai

(29 October 2022)

There are over 160 fortified churches in the Transylvania region, one of which is Pretai/Brăteiu.

Only a few remnants of the 14th-century Gothic basilica remain today. Today’s church shows features of the 15th century. The interior of the church has been greatly altered by removing the southern row of pillars, raising the exterior walls and installing a barrel vault. Of particular note are the pillars between the north and center aisles, which have profiled cross-sections and figurative capitals.

On the journey through the valley of the Great Kokel (Târnava Mare), a few kilometers east of Mediaș (MedJugendbauhütte Pretaiia?), the fortified church of Brateiu appears. It is situated in the middle of the village on the village green.

There is strength in serenity

(21 October 2022)

As you travel through the country, you can see a multitude of flocks of sheep, goats and also cattle, guarded by shepherds and their dogs.

Here you’ll find the last nomads in Europe, often moving their herds hundreds of kilometers from winter pastures to summer pastures and back. Over 3,000 wolves still roam Romania’s border regions with Ukraine and pose a constant threat to these herds.

In the Țarcu Mountains (in south-west Romania) you can even see a herd of free-roaming European zebra, extinct but reintroduced there a few years ago by WWF.

(20 October 2022)

These mud volcanoes are located in the municipality of Berca, in Buzau county.

Since 1924, the area of about 30 km² has been declared a nature reserve. The main attraction of the protected area are the small mud volcanoes a few centimeters/meters high, which are cold volcanism. Volcanoes are created by gases rising from a depth of about 3,000 meters through layers of clay and water. On the earth’s surface, the mud dries and forms volcano-like structures.

The clock tower with weather tap has a total height of about 64 meters. The wall thickness is 2.4 meters on the ground floor, the masonry height is 39.5 meters (from 1804), the tower has five floors. Mogoșoaia Castle, near Bucharest

(15 October 2022)

In Ilfov County, just a few kilometers north-west of Bucharest (Romania’s capital), Mogoșoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogoșoaia in Mogoșoaia. The castle contains a main courtyard and many buildings such as the watchtower and the church ′′Sf. Gheorghe′′ near the courtyard.

Wallachian Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu built the castle between 1698 and 1702 on the widow Mogoș (later named Mogoșoaia) in the Brâncoveanu style named after him.

In 1714, when Constantin Brâncoveanu was executed in Constantinople with his entire family, the Ottomans confiscated all the family possessions and turned the palace into a Han (a kind of inn). In the following decades, the castle was conquered, destroyed and rebuilt several times, until it was owned by George III in 1912 Valentin Bibesco married the French writer Marthe Bibesco, who was born into Romanian nobility. He gave the property to his wife, Marthe Bibesco then rebuilt the castle intensively.

The castle can be visited without entrance fee, it has a wonderful large park where you can/allow, for example, to have a picnic or just laze the day away. Inside the castle you pay a fee of approx. 10 lei (2,10 euro) for parking, restaurants, museums and much more… also an extended walk with the rest on a bench overlooking the lake… many things are possible and beautiful.

Warning… you should not take the camera with you or put it in your pocket!!! Cell phone pictures are no problem, but as a ′′camera owner′′ you are already vehemently advised at the entrance that for professional photography you have to pay a fee of 400 Lei (approx. EUR 80).

(11 October 2022)

The town of Toplița (in Hungarian Maroshévíz, in German Töplitz) is located in Harghita county in Transylvania.

The pictures show St. Elijah’s Monastery, or Toplița Monastery, which was founded in 1928 by Dr. Miron Cristea, the first Patriarch of Romania. Inside the monastery there is a museum including icons on wood and glass and a parish library with thousands of volumes.

In ancient times, this was probably the site of the Dacian settlement of Sangidava (after Ptolemy). The town of Toplița was first mentioned in writing in 1658 and belonged at that time to the Principality of Transylvania and from the end of the 17th century to the Habsburg Monarchy.

After World War I, the town became part of Romania. Following the Second Vienna Arbitration in 1940, it belonged again to Hungary for four years and since 1944 back to Romania.

Romania’s haunted forest, Hoia Baciu

(5 October 2022)

Just outside Cluj-Napoca, in north-western Romania, lies the Hoia Baciu forest area.

It is one of the most visited forests in the world, also known as Romania’s Bermuda Triangle. Why? Over the decades, there have been thousands of reports of paranormal activity, the beginnings of cell phone malfunctions, sightings of glowing orbs and ghosts, disappearances of animals, people and more…

Hoia Baciu Forest takes its name from a shepherd in the region who disappeared into the forest with his flock of sheep. One story tells of a five-year-old girl who went into the forest and came back five years later wearing the same clothes and not looking a day older. Many other stories revolve around a meadow where nothing grows, even though scientists have examined the soil and found that everything is fine. The forest is a fascinating and unique place to visit or hike.

And whether you’re in search of the supernatural… or just an interesting hike, this forest is worth a visit.

Sulina… the road to the sea

(1 October 2022)

The town of Sulina is actually an island because it is surrounded by a canal. The inhabitants therefore like to talk about people from the mainland (mainland), even though they are separated from the mainland by a channel (up to 20 meters wide).

The Black Sea can be reached both by road and by Danube. You must experience both, as it is an unforgettable experience.

Sulina … on the waterfront

(1 October 2022)

About five kilometers long is the waterfront promenade of Sulina. It starts at Mila 2 and besides the typical blue and green houses, the path is dotted with new buildings (mostly hotels and accommodation) until you reach the old town center.

You can also meet horses right in town, which are nobody’s and roam freely at will. There are few cars (because they have to be brought to Sulina by boat), the clocks are slower here… and that’s a good thing!

To get to Sulina you drive about 1 hour 20 minutes with a small boat (max 12 persons, up to 80 km !! fast) from Tulcea. This trip must be experienced once
