Burg Bran | With or without Dracula

(30 October 2024)

Bran Castle (also known as Törzburg, in Romanian: Bran Castle, in Hungarian: Törcsvar) is located in the Transylvania region of Romania.
Whether Dracula (or his namesake, “Vlad III. Draculea”) lived here or elsewhere, the castle is definitely a tourist attraction and well worth a visit, along with its museum.

Between 1920 and 1947, it was the royal residence of King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria, as well as their daughter, Princess Ileana, who inherited the castle from her mother in 1938. Today, the castle is owned by the Habsburg family, who received it back as a de jure property from the Romanian state in 2006, following a succession of inheritance rights.

City Wall Sibiu / Hermannstadt

(26 October 2024)

Excerpt from the history of Sibiu: In 1438, the Turks besieged the city, but failed to take it. However, the entire surrounding area was devastated.

As a result of the threat from the Turks, the city had three rings of walls built with 39 towers and several large gates. It became the largest fortified city in the Kingdom of Hungary. Hermannstadt repeatedly resisted the sieges of the Turks, who never succeeded in capturing the city.

In 1442, the Turks were beaten at the city gates, mayor Thomas Trautenberger became a legend. Consequently, in 1445, Pope Eugenius IV described Sibiu as a wall and shield of Christianity.

However, the armies passing through and kicking and kicking in front of the city again destroyed the entire surrounding area. Only once, the Hungarian prince of Transylvania, Gabriel Bathory, succeeded in occupying the city by tric trickery, plundering and expelling all the German inhabitants from the solid walls – a bitter lesson, which led to even greater vigilance and distrust of the Germans.

By 1500, Sibiu already had about 6000 inhabitants. In the Reformation, the writings of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon came to the city in 1523. In 1543, the Protestant creed was introduced as states gave each other the freedom to decide on their faith. On March 31, 1556, during a town fire, the entire lower town and also part of the upper town burned down and about 550 buildings were destroyed.

Hermannsta was the political center of the Transylvanian Saxons and the seat of the Universitas Saxonum, a kind of Transylvanian Parliament that dealt with Transylvanian-Saxon concerns until 1878 and was a symbol of the political unity and independence of the Transylvanian Saxons.

Swallowtail… from Galati

Seen (July), photographed and immediately googled. The hummingbird butterfly (Macroglossum stellatarum), with its extremely rapid wing beats (up to 80 beats per second), might be mistaken for a hummingbird at first glance, but it is actually a butterfly (family Sphingidae).

This butterfly can be found from Spain to Japan, along the entire east-west length of the Palearctic*. Our people come from Galati (a city in south-eastern Romania) and probably speak fluent Romanian

*Palaearctic region, also known as the Palearctic, refers in biogeography to an ancient zoogeographic region of the world that traditionally includes Europe, North Africa, and Asia (except the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula), as well as islands adjacent to these areas (Source: Wikipedia).

Castelul Mogosoaia | Near the city of București

(14 October 2024)

In the Ilfov district, a few kilometers northwest of Bucharest (Romania’s capital), Mogosoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogosoaia, in the municipality of Mogosoaia.

The castle contains a main courtyard and many buildings, such as the watchtower and the church “St. George” near the courtyard.

The Wallachian Prince Constantin Brancoveanu had the castle built between 1698 – 1702 on the estate of the widow Mogos (from which the name Mogosoaia was later derived) in the Brancoveanu style architecture named after him.
In 1714, when Constantin Brancoveanu and his entire family were executed in Constantinople, the Ottomans confiscated the entire family fortune and turned the palace into an inn (a kind of inn).

In the following decades, the castle was repeatedly conquered, destroyed and rebuilt, until it became the property of George III in 1912. Valentin Bibesco arrived, who was married to the French writer Marthe Bibesco of Romanian nobility. He gave the estate to his wife, and Marthe Bibesco restored the castle extensively.

Petersberg | Sânpetru | Brasov county

(14 October 2024)

The Protestant fortified church in Petersberg is the only one in Transylvania in which all three enclosure walls have been preserved.

The village was probably founded during the time of the Teutonic Order (1211-1225) and belonged to the Tartlau Hundred. It was first mentioned in a document from 1240. In this year the Hungarian King Bela IV donated the villages of Tartlau, Honigberg, Marienburg and Petersberg to the Cistercian Order. The Order was to receive the tax revenues from these settlements; in addition, no building works, works of art or cemeteries could be built, commissioned or consecrated without the Cistercians’ consent.

Many typical Transylvanian Saxon houses have been preserved in this village in Burzenland.

Vinga | Arad county | Arad | Banat

(11 October 2024)

If you travel on the road (E671) from Timișoara to Arad, you will pass the commune of Vinga (Theresiopolis in German) about 25 km before Arad.

The two churches are very large for such a small community. The Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church, on the left in the picture) and the Roman Catholic Church (Catholic Church, on the right in the picture and in other pictures).

The first documentary mention of Vinga dates back to 1231. After it was sacked and destroyed by the Turks, Vinga was resettled in 1737 and 1741 by about 125 families of “Bulgarian-Bavarians” from Cyprovts in western Bulgaria, who crossed the Danube and settled in different parts of the Banat Plain. On August 1, 1744, Vinga received the status of a town with a magistrate and various privileges from Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.

Cluj-Napoca | Impressions from the end of June 2024

(8 October 2024)

Pictures from Cluj-Napoca (in German Klausenburg, in Hungarian Kolozsvar) on June 29 and 30. The city is (probably*) the second largest city in Romania and capital of Cluj county in Transylvania.

With a population of around 400 000, Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of Transylvania. There are universities, a lively nightlife and many buildings dating back to the time of Hungarian and Saxon rule. Surrounding the main square, Union Square, is the Gothic Church of St Michael and an equestrian statue of the 15th-century King Matthias Corvinus. The baroque Banffy Palace is now a museum displaying Romanian art.

Hurezi Monastery (Horezu Monastery) | Valcea county

(8 October 2024)

Horezu Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of nuns located in the historical region of Muntenia Mică, in Valcea county.

https://discover-valcea.com

Situated at the foot of the Căpățânii Mountains, a mountain massif in the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romanii de Jos, the monastery is about three kilometers (in a straight line) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (huhurezi in Romanian) nesting in the woods around the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then Prince of Muntenia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and completed in 1709. It was a men’s monastery until 1862. After the monks were transferred to Bistrița, nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is a listed building.

Situated on a hill, the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The smaller outer wall surrounds the entire monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by buildings of different heights and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side through a bell tower with a massive wooden gate armored with steel. The monastery church of Saints Constantine and Helen in the center of the complex is 32 meters long, 14 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697. There are several tombs in the vestibule of the church, the most beautiful of which is decorated with marble and a carved lid, intended for Prince Brâncoveanu, but which never fulfilled its purpose and was therefore never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and covered in gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was built in 1697. The frescoes in the chapel were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

(6 October 2024)

We start at the end, but at the outset we would like to thank the Zitzmann family, who not only allowed us to use the photos from the trip (end of September 2023), but also to take the experiences. Thank you

“We drive the Transalpina, but after a few hours we realize we are missing the beautiful part. Google talks about closures, missing crash barriers and the fact that the road was never finished…well, we let it get to that, we turn around, we turn around (the Transalpina is somehow split in two) 100 mushroom hunters pull 1000 kilograms of mushrooms out of the forest, in big vats we know from picking grapes. The quantities are unbelievable.

We find a great place to sleep, you are only allowed on the road from 8am to 6pm…whatever, we stay anyway, we don’t drive. In Romania it doesn’t seem to matter, the locals are on the road after 6 p.m., digging for stones, etc. In the morning we see a flock of sheep next to us, spend a lot of time in the beautiful mountain area, and in the afternoon we finally get to the castle in Hunedoara to visit it.”

“Romania, day 16, we are traveling about 90 km on the Transfăgărășan, which is only open four months of the year – the rest of the year, the high road is closed due to the long winter. Many media refer to it as the “most beautiful” mountain road. It’s unique because you can see wild bears there. The mountain road was built in just 4.5 years, and the highest point is at 2042 meters.

On the orders of former head of state Nicolae Ceausescu (dictator), the high road was intended not only for military purposes, due to strained relations with the Soviet Union after the Prague Spring events, but also for tourism. This road link through the mountains was intended to facilitate rapid troop movements. After four and a half years of construction, the road was opened on September 20, 1974. ”

Wild horses in the Danube Delta

(1 October 2024)

Historical documents attest that the ancestors of the present-day horse population in the Danube Delta arrived there 300 to 400 years ago, brought by the Tatars. They settled in the area, gradually adapting and becoming increasingly wild.

In the northeast of the Delta (Tulcea County), between the Chilia and Sulina inlets, lies the locality and the Letea Forest (Romanian: Letea Forest), with an area of over 5,000 hectares (50,000,000 m²). It is the northernmost subtropical forest in Europe, the oldest nature reserve in Romania and the habitat of these horses.

The Fortress of Brasov

(1 October 2024)

The Fortress of Brasov (in German Kronstadt) is a fortification built in the 15th century on Straja Hill (Castle Hill) to repel enemy attacks.

Throughout its history, it has been attacked and rebuilt again and again, and was even an important defensive point during the First World War. Originally, there was only the fortress tower. The outer fortress was built between 1630-1631. The horseshoe-shaped central tower has three floors and has served several purposes over the centuries: it was used as a storehouse, a prison for Turkish prisoners in the 18th century and a fortress.

Later, during the plague, a special ward was set up for the sick.
