Statue of Decebal, Dubova

(30 September 2022)

The statue of the Dacian king Decebal (about 86 – 106 AD) is 55 meters high and is the largest/highest rock sculpture in Europe.

It is located on a rock formation of the Almăj Mountains on the Danube bank, near the village of Dubova (Mehedinți County) in the Iron Gates Natural Park (Parcul Natural Porțile de Fier).

It took 10 years, a million US dollars and 12 sculptors to create it… and it may not have been designed by the Dacian king himself, but commissioned by a Romanian businessman and historian between 1994 and 2004.

Fortified Churches in Transylvania – Pretai

(26 September 2022)

There are over 160 fortified churches in the Transylvania region, one of which is Pretai/Brăteiu.

Only a few remnants of the 14th-century Gothic basilica remain today. Today’s church shows features of the 15th century. The interior of the church has been greatly altered by removing the southern row of pillars, raising the exterior walls and installing a barrel vault. Of particular note are the pillars between the north and center aisles, which have profiled cross-sections and figurative capitals.

County Museum of History Brasov / Weavers Bastion

(25 September 2022)

The Museum of History of the City and County of Brasov (Kronstadt) was founded in 1950 and is located in the former parish hall in the center of the square of the Council Square or partially in the bastion of the Weavers of Brasov (Kronstadt).

The bastion, defended and maintained by the linen weavers’ guild, was built in two stages between 1421-1436 and 1570-1573. In the first phase, the first two levels of the three battle galleries were built. The upper galleries, built between 1570 and 1573, were intended for small caliber weapons that could be used through narrow, circular bullet holes throughout the galleries. Two watchtowers were built for the guard, who monitored the city both from a military point of view and from the point of view of observing possible fires.

After restoration, the Weavers’ Bastion was turned into a museum.

Fortified churches in Transylvania – wooden fortresses

(22 September 2022)

There are over 160 fortified churches in the Transylvania region, one of which is Holzmenge / Hosman.

Only the west portal and the arched pillars separating the nave and aisles survive from the basilica, which was built in the 13th century. The west portal is a valuable testimony to Transylvanian Romanesque architectural sculpture with numerous relief friezes. Around 1500, the bell-tower of the church was enlarged in wood and equipped with a crenel supported by brackets. In the course of this, the side aisles of the church were removed. The two walls of the fortress, built in the 15th century, are connected by the gate tower and still show traces of the former battlements and gatehouses.

Iulia Hasdeu Castle, Prahova county

(20 September 2022)

Iulia Hasdeu Castle is located in the small town of Câmpina in Prahova County.

Iulia Hasdeu Castle was built by the historian and politician Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu as a small castle. Work on it began in 1893 after Hasdeu’s daughter, Iulia Hasdeu, died at the age of 19, an event that dramatically shocked Hasdeu’s life. He claimed that his late daughter offered the plans for the castle’s construction during seances. The building was completed in 1896.

Stories tell of the castle being deeply sinister. There are rooms specially designed for spiritual rituals, equipped with spirit seats. Many claim that Hasdeu (the father) did not build the castle at all to commemorate his daughter Iulia, but to worship Satan. Others say that they have seen Juliet’s ghost, dressed in white and adorned with daisies, haunting the castle to this day.

Since 1994, Iulia Hașdeu Castle houses the “B.P. Hașdeu” memorial museum, which exhibits furniture and personal belongings of the Hașdeu family, including photographs, original documents, manuscripts, reviews of Hasdeu and pictures by Nicolae Grigorescu and Sava Henția.

Horezu Monastery

(14 September 2022)

Horezu Monastery (also known as Hurezi Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of Romanian Orthodox nuns located in the historical region of Valahia Mica in Valcea. At the foot of Căpățânii Mountain, a mountain massif of the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romani de Jos, the monastery is located about three kilometers (air company) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of the nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian owls) that roost in the woods surrounding the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 Until 1862 it was a man’s monastery. After the monks were transferred to Bistri ta, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.

On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. Outside a smaller wall surrounded the whole monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by different buildings and in the east by a wall. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side of a belfry, armored with a solid wooden gate with steel. The monastery church of Sfin ti Impara ti Constantine and Helen built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape is 32 meters long and 32 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697 In the vestibule of the church there are some tombs, most beautifully equipped with marble and carved casing for Prince Brâncoveanu, but it did not fulfill its purpose and therefore was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and encased in gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was erected in 1697 The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

Dragomirna Monastery

(14 September 2022)

Dragomirna Monastery is located about 15 kilometers north of the city of Suceava (Suceava County), near the village of Dragomirna. It was founded by Bishop Anastasie Crimca, who had the present buildings erected after a first small complex between 1602 and 1609.

The monastery is surrounded by walls 10 meters high and 2 meters wide, which were built to protect against conquerors and were completed in 1627. The monastery church, 42 meters high, 35 meters long and 9.50 meters wide, has Romanesque, Gothic and oriental stylistic elements. Its interior reveals miniature-style murals, thanks to the influence of the donor, Crimca, who was also a miniaturist. The associated museum exhibits cult objects, valuables, valuable manuscripts, icons and valuable miniatures from the monastery collection.

Károlyi Castle (Carei), Satu Mare county

(12 September 2022)

Károlyi Castle is a neo-Gothic-neo-Baroque palace complex in the town of Carei (Gross Karol in German, Nagykároly in Hungarian) in the county of Satu Mare in north-western Romania. It was once the ancestral seat of the Hungarian noble family Károlyi von Nagykároly.

The castle with its gardens and museums is open to visitors and hosts several exhibitions.

Brief history:
The origins of the castle lie in a stone house built in 1482 by Láncz László Károlyi Károlyi with the permission of King Matthias. Due to its strategic position, the fortress was part of the fortification system used against the Turks in the 17th century, after the fortifications were extended in 1661 and 1666.

This fortress was demolished by József Károlyi in 1794 to build a Baroque-style castle designed by Joseph Bitthauser in its place. There were also several towers of various shapes and sizes. The inner courtyard was covered with a solid wooden ceiling and thus transformed into a reception hall. A moat was also built around the castle.

Hunedoara / Corvin Castle – wonderful pictures

(5 September 2022)

Hunedoara Castle (in German Burg Eisenmarkt, in Romanian Corvin Castle or Huniazilor Castle, in Hungarian Vajdahunyadi vár) is one of the most important non-religious buildings in Transylvania. The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the south-western part of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The listed castle has many other names (Corvin Castle, Corviner Castle, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which can be traced back to its location or owners.

After 1440, Hungarian statesman and army commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification converted into the ancestral home of the Hunyadi family. In the second phase of construction, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. In the early 17th century, under the reign of Prince Gábor Bethlen, further major changes were made to the building. Today’s castle is therefore a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle has been in Austrian ownership since 1724 and in Romanian ownership since 1918. In addition to being a tourist attraction, the castle is (and has been) used as a backdrop for a large number of Romanian and international film productions. There is currently a museum in the castle.
