The Ascension of the Lord Church in Bacău is the third largest cathedral in Romania, after the Cathedral of the Salvation of the Nation in Bucharest and the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Baia Mare. The building under construction is not a proper cathedral, because Bacău is not the seat of any bishopric.

However, due to its size and importance, it is called by the locals “cathedral” – in the sense used in early Christianity, that of the main seat of the city. Officially, if the bishop will serve in this church, it will be a cathedral or co-cathedral.
