The town/municipality of Saschiz is located in the Kokel Highlands, in the southern part of Mureș County. Situated along the stream of the same name and European Route 60, the town lies about 20 kilometers east of Sighișoara and approximately 70 kilometers southeast of the county seat, Târgu Mureș (Neumarkt am Mieresch). Saschiz does not have a train station. The nearest train station is in the town of Vânători, located about 10 kilometers to the north.
The History of Keisd / Saschiz
Saschiz / Keisd was founded as a settlement of the Reps See during the first wave of settlement in the so-called “Königsboden,” likely as early as the 12th century by German settlers (Transylvanian Saxons). The village was first mentioned in a document in 1309.

In the center of the village stands the Gothic-style Protestant church, built in 1496.

Die Keisder Burg, eine sogenannte Bauernburg, wurde auf einem Hügel südwestlich des Ortes zwischen dem 14. und 15. Jahrhundert von den sächsischen Einwohnern erbaut. Auf einer Steininschrift ist die Jahreszahl 1343 verzeichnet. Die Mauern der Anlage sind 7 bis 9 Meter hoch, die Burg hatte sechs Türme und einen 57 Meter tiefen Burgbrunnen, der heute nur noch ca. 10 bis 12 m tief ist. Die Burg ist Freitag bis Sonntag für Besucher geöffnet.
