The fortified church of Tartlau, in the commune of Prejmer, Brasov County, has the most powerful ring wall of all the Saxon fortified churches in Transylvania. The oldest fortification ring is said to have been built before 1300 and was expanded at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century.

In its present form, the walls still stand 12 to 14 meters high and up to 5 meters thick at the base. Inside the fortress are over 270 refuge and storage chambers, arranged on up to four levels.

To cross rivers, there are many regions in Transylvania that are still hanging bridges, suitable only for pedestrians.

They are mostly made of wood and remind a bit of Indiana Jones movies in terms of construction and condition / accessibility 😁

These images were made on the Buzau River on the way to Brașov (Kronstadt).

The commune of Harman (German: Honigberg) is located in the historical region of Burzenland, about 12 kilometers northeast of the city of Brasov (Kronstadt).

The Hungarian King Andrew II granted Burzenland to the Teutonic Order in 1211, who settled there, built castles, brought German settlers to the land, and founded villages such as Honigberg. After disputes with the king, the order was expelled from Burzenland in 1225, but the German settlements remained.

We don’t know exactly if the "nice gentleman" in the picture is meant to represent the former voivode of Wallachia or if he’s just showcasing his stylish attire as a witness of the times. 🦇🦇

He never actually lived here, but either way, the castle in Brasov County is definitely worth a visit 🥰

On the way from Sibiu to Brașov lies the town of Făgăraș. At the end of the 12th century the town's fortress was only a wooden fortification, which was expanded into a stone fortress in the 14th century.

The fortress houses a museum, which—like the fortress itself—can be visited. Directly next to the fortress is the cathedral / church Sfantul Ioan Botezatorul.

"Romania, day 14, today is the day of the fortified churches in Transylvania, where there are and were many Saxon Germans. Fortified churches could shelter the inhabitants of entire villages during attacks. Each family received a small chamber. In one of the fortified churches, there were over 200 such chambers. There was also a school, weaving workshop, etc. inside, because the villages were often besieged for a long time... very interesting to see, at some fortified churches we were allowed to climb up to the tower on adventurous paths. Without any safety precautions, something that would be impossible in Austria. They just say: be careful, steep steps. 🙂 When you stand under a bell supported by rotten wooden beams, you better not think about it. Another day with many new impressions. 🙂"

The historic gate is shaped like a triumphal arch and is part of the medieval city wall / fortress surrounding the old town of Brasov.

It was built between 1827 and 1828 and, together with the Catherine Gate, is the only remaining gate of the old fortress. In 1955 it was declared a historical monument.

Viscri is located northwest of Rupea and southeast of Sighisoara. Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had about 700 inhabitants, most of whom were Transylvanian Saxons.

In winter, snow and skiing; in spring, summer, and autumn, a wonderful region for beautiful hikes... the Bucegi Mountains in the counties of Prahova and Brasov.

The highest peak is Varful (Mount) Omu, with an elevation of 2,502 meters. The Bucegi Mountains are located south of the city of Brașov (Kronstadt), on the eastern edge of the Southern Carpathians in Romania.

Pictures from these days from Galt (Romanian: Ungra) in Brașov County. On the route from Kronstadt to Schäßburg, a few kilometers before Rupea, you turn about 4 km into a small side valley to Galt. On a hilltop lies the evangelical fortified church. In the former castle guard’s house, a small homeland museum of the Transylvanian Saxons has been set up. In this typical Saxon village, about 30 Germans still live.

The village of Viscri (in German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, in Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in Brașov County in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town/citadel of Rupea and southeast of the city of Sighișoara. Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had about 700 inhabitants, mainly Transylvanian Saxons and a Romanian village section. Viscri is notable for its fortified church and the typical Saxon village layout.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1185. At the northwest end of the village stands the fortified church.

In the 12th century, before the German settlers arrived, the Székelys (a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here. In the 13th century, it was expanded. After the first Turkish incursions, the church was fortified in the 14th century, and a defensive wall with towers was built.

The construction of the church in the center of the complex was probably started in 1218 by the Teutonic Order, which, however, was expelled from the region in 1225. Under the Cistercian monastery of Cârța, the construction was then continued. A special feature of the inventory is the late Gothic winged altar from the mid-15th century.

Rosenau (Râșnov) is a small town of about 15,000 inhabitants, with a fortress and a Dino Park. In the 14th century the fortress was built above the town on the limestone cliffs. The Râșnov Dino Park is only 200 metres from the back of the fortress (as shown in the picture). Nothing stands in the way of a wonderful family day.
