The Jiului Valley, with the river of the same name (which is a tributary of the Danube), is located in the southwest of Transylvania between the Retezat Mountains and the Parâng Mountains in Hunedoara county. Known for its coal production in the past, the valley has long been known as the largest coal field in Romania.
