The commune of Petrosani (in Hungarian Petrozssny, in German Steinthal) is located in Hunedoara County in Transylvania.

The commune lies in the Jiu Valley, at an altitude of about 620 meters. It is known as a mining town, but the surrounding area offers a variety of wonderful destinations for trips, stays, recreation, relaxation, and more...

The Valcan Pass is located in Hunedoara County in the Jiu Valley.

It sits on a plateau of the western group of the Southern Carpathians, in the eastern part of the Valcan Mountains at an altitude of 1,621 meters. The nearby town of Vulcan (approximately 25,000 inhabitants) is named after this pass. The highest peak in this mountain range is Valcan Peak at 1,946 meters.

The Schiltal, or Valea Jiului in Romanian, is nestled in the Retezat Mountains, Hunedoara County, and was once the largest mining area in Romania.

From the middle of the 19th century, miners and experts from different parts of Europe and many different nationalities came here and have shaped the image of this region to this day. Of the 16 former coal mines, three are still in operation today. In winter, until spring, there are also many winter sports activities in this area around the towns of Petrosani and Lupeni.
