More details – History Present
Only 4 km from Sibiu, in the “Dumbravă Sibiului” nature reserve, the open-air museum is an ideal place to preserve the authentic Romanian spirit, a living museum that hosts numerous events with a traditional character: festivals, fairs, craft workshops and much more.
The entire area of the open-air museum is 96 hectares, of which the actual exhibition occupies 42 hectares, being organized into 6 sectors and 36 thematic groups and subgroups. The natural setting allows, in addition to educational visits, walks on foot, with carriages , by boat or in winter, by sledge.
The museum also has two restaurants, one being “La Cârciumă din Bătrâni” where you can taste traditional dishes, famous for the Romanian culinary art, and two guesthouses, including a play area for children. The story of the ASTRA Museum began more than a century ago, with the demonstrations of the Romanians from Transylvania to organize an ethnographic collection in Sibiu. This had the role of highlighting the most representative testimonies about the Romanian specificity, respectively what differentiates us from other peoples. The first exhibition of the Museum took place in 1905.
Present
Currently, the museum enjoys the visit of a large number of tourists who pass by annually to marvel at the traditional Romanian things.
