More than 7,000 great white pelicans and 700 Dalmatian pelicans live in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, where they are considered symbols of the protected area.

The great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) and the Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus), reaching a height of up to 180 cm and weighing more than 13 kilograms, are among the largest birds in the Danube Delta. The largest pelican colony in Europe is located in the Roșca–Buhaiova area, in Tulcea County, in the Danube Delta.

The northern part of the reserve is crossed by the three distributaries of the Danube flowing in from the west and separating at Tulcea: the Chilia Branch, which forms the Romanian–Ukrainian state border in the north; the Sulina Branch in the centre; and the Sfântu Gheorghe Branch in the south. All three branches flow into the Black Sea.

As part of Dobrogea's northern massif, it lies between the Danube and the Black Sea. The highest peak is called Varful Țutuiatul and is 467 meters high. Culmea Pricopanului (photo) is about 20 kilometers east of the city of Brăila.

Historical documents confirm that the ancestors of today’s horse population in the Danube Delta arrived there 300 to 400 years ago, brought by the Tatars. They settled there, gradually adapting to the environment, and became increasingly feral.

In the northeastern Delta (Tulcea County), between the Chilia and Sulina branches, lies the village and forest of Letea (Romanian: Pădurea Letea), covering an area of over 5,000 hectares (50,000,000 m²). This is Europe’s northernmost subtropical forest, Romania's oldest nature reserve, and home to these horses.

Tulcea, the county in which most of the Danube Delta is located, the city of Sulina, the Macin Mountains, and of course the county capital, Tulcea itself.

The Sulina Waterfront (promenade) is approximately five (5) km long. It starts at Mile 2 and, alongside the typical houses in blue and green, the path is interrupted by new constructions (mostly hotels and accommodations) until reaching the old center of the town.

Also, right in the town, you encounter horses that belong to no one and move freely as they please. There are few cars (as they must be brought to Sulina by ship), the clocks run slower here ... and that's a good thing!

To reach Sulina, it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes by a small boat (max. 12 people, up to 80 km/h!!) from Tulcea. This ride must be experienced at least once.

In early September, cross the new bridge at Braila over the Danube, continue for about 15 km to Macin and continue straight on for about 500 metres after reaching the end of the village.

Then turn left off the main road towards the Monastery of the Spring of Healing (also Macin Monastery) and as soon as you turn left again towards the monastery, park on the right and walk to the right ... into the Macin mountains.

Butterflies, lizards, a tortoise and lots and lots of nature all the way to the top of Vraju, (probably) the highest point in the mountain range, 335 metres above sea level. A great view of the monastery and the surrounding area towards the Danube Delta, Braila and Galati, including the new bridge over the Danube, rewards the afternoon climb, when it's still around 28 degrees.

Hike time up/down: 4 hours, with the last 30-45 minutes being rockier and therefore good footwear is a must. The hiking trails are well signposted and easy to follow/find.

With a length of approximately five km is the waterfront (promenade on the waterfront) of Sulina. It starts at Mila 2 and next to the typical blue and green houses, the path is dotted with new buildings (mostly hotels and accommodation) until you reach the old city center.

The Cocosu Monastery is located between Galati / Braila and Tulcea (a city in the Danube Delta), at the foot of the “Dealul Cocosului” hills.

It was founded in the second half of the 17th century, with the church being demolished and rebuilt in 1910. The monastery consists of an abbot’s house, several monks’ dwellings, a bell tower, a chapel, and a church dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God.

From August 15 to 17, 2025, the city festival takes place in Sulina, Tulcea County.

Gura (German: mouth) Portitei is a unique place in Europe where the Black Sea and the Danube Delta meet. It is located on a narrow strip of sand between the Black Sea and the Goloveni estuary in the Danube Delta and is part of the commune of Jurilovca in Tulcea district.

Originally a fishing village, Gura Portitei (Portita) is now known as one of the most isolated (and still relatively quiet) tourist destinations on the Romanian coast. Access is usually by boat from Jurilovca. The area is part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.

Cocos Monastery is located about 35 km from the city of Tulcea and is administered by a monastic community.

It is located in a remote place, at the foot of a hill, surrounded by the smell of lime forests. The first documentary attestation of a religious settlement in this area dates back to 1679.

Sarichioi is located 35 km from Tulcea, directly on Lake Razim and therefore practically on the Black Sea.

Cocoșu Monastery is located between Galați / Braila and the city of Tulcea in the Danube Delta, at the foot of the “Cocoșului Hill” hills.

It was founded in the second half of the 17th century, the church being demolished and rebuilt in 1910. The monastery includes a monastery, a series of monastic apartments, a bell tower, a chapel and a church dedicated to the Assumption.

The Enisala, Yeni-Sale or Heracleea fortress, as it has been called over time, is a special tourist attraction in the Dobrogea region of Tulcea County.

The ruins of the medieval fortress Enisala are located on a limestone hill, also called Dealul Gras, which dominates the area of the lakes Razim and Babadag, about 2 km from the small town of Enisala.

Letea Forest (Romanian: Pădurea Letea) is located in Tulcea County, in the northeast of the Danube Delta, between the branches of the Chilia and Sulina rivers, and stretches over 5,000 hectares. It is the northernmost subtropical forest in Europe and the oldest nature reserve in Romania. Parts of the forest have been protected since 1930.
