Short description: The medieval fortress (in Hungarian Marosvásárhelyi vár) is located in the center of the municipality of Târgu Mureș. The fortress complex dates back to the 15th century with an area of 4.3 ha in the form of a fortified enclosure with 7 bastions joined by walls.

Inside the fortification is the Reformed Church of the Citadel and the Museum of History and Archaeology. Both the citadel with its inner buildings (MS-II-a-A-15475) and the urban complex (MS-II-a-A-15454) around it are on the list of historical monuments.

Between the years 1602 and 1652, the current pentagonal-shaped citadel was built, having 5 of the 7 bastions built by the workers’ guilds that used river stone and brick as construction materials.

The bastions consist of 3 or 4 levels that communicate inside by wooden stairs. The architectural style in which the Reformed Church and the Manutanții Building were built belongs to the late Renaissance.

The citadel is also the place where different cultural-artistic actions take place, there are painting and photography exhibitions. These types of actions take place especially during the days of Târgu Mureșului, in the month of June every year.
