Targu Mures | The City of Trees
(07 August 2026)
X

(07 August 2026)
In June 2026, we spent a longer period travelling around Mures County and Targu Mures, and something we noticed more and more was that Targu Mures is a city with many, many trees and green spaces.
Almost every street has its own densely wooded avenue, while parks and public squares are lined with trees. Everywhere, including in the city centre, there is always space for a tree or, in most cases, several trees... and the city’s zoo is located in a large adjacent forest.
The city offers plenty of shade, and the many trees make the high temperatures more bearable. It is perfect for residents and visitors—and perhaps also for one or two urban planners—to see first-hand what “green” can achieve.

Never seen before... how a stork drinks

Seen and photographed by chance. Despite having seen hundreds of storks in Romania, we had never really thought about how a stork drinks 🤔
The beak is long, and the neck is too, and when you look at the pictures in sequence... phew, we're glad we can enjoy our drink simply from a glass or a bottle 😅

Train connection Targu Mures – Stuttgart 21
(21 June 2026)
X

(21 June 2026)
And it keeps waiting... in Targu Mures, but we found it. The train that was actually supposed to connect Targu Mures with Stuttgart 21 😅
But it seems the airport is faster! Starting in September, flights from Targu Mures to Memmingen are available from as little as €38. By rail, you can reach Passau in about 18 to 24 hours using other train connections (with 3 to 5 transfers), and from there it takes another approximately 5 hours to Stuttgart. This train here, however, will probably never reach Stuttgart in its lifetime, as it is already being reclaimed by time and overgrown with vegetation 🙈

The statue group of the Transylvanian School scholars in the city of Targu Mures honors four key figures of the Transylvanian School: Samuil Micu, Gheorghe Șincai, Petru Maior, and Ion Budai-Deleanu.
These Enlightenment thinkers of the 18th and early 19th centuries played a decisive role in the cultural and political emancipation of Romanians in Transylvania.
Samuil Micu: theologian and historian who laid the foundations for the theory of the Latin origins of the Romanian people.
Gheorghe Șincai: historian and educator who made a major contribution to the development of Romanian education.
Petru Maior: scholar and linguist who contributed to the creation of the landmark dictionary "Lexiconul de la Buda."
Ion Budai-Deleanu: polyglot, philologist, and author of the famous comic epic "Țiganiada."

Doors, actually gates ... we have discovered them and we love them

When walking through the villages and towns of Transylvania, you will find them everywhere... old doors and gates (here is another one in the city of Targu Mures), small, medium-sized, large, and even enormous.
Some of these gates are a hundred years old or even older and represent living history.
Many of these doors and gates are true works of art, and we have started paying more and more attention to them 🥰

First of all, admission costs 30 Lei (currently about €5.75), and the ticket office is located about 80 meters to the right of the entrance (around the corner to the left) 😅😁. But anyone visiting the city should definitely see the Palace of Culture (including the museum and the Hall of Mirrors)!
The Palace of Culture is located in the center of Targu Mures, Mures County. The building houses the Mures County Library, the Mures County Museum, and the Targu Mures State Philharmonic.
It was built between 1911 and 1914 in the Secession style* and consists of three sections: the main building, the right wing, and the left wing. Above the entrance hall is the Hall of Mirrors, located on the first floor of the building.
