Sibiu (Hermannstadt) in the centre of Romania was one of the most representative cities in Romania, the most prosperous of the seven fortresses known as Siebenburgen, built in the 12th century by German settlers. The Museum of Traditional Folk Culture in Sibiu (Hermannstadt in German) is one of the largest open-air museums in Romania. Located just south of Sibiu (German: Hermannstadt), the museum is situated in the “Dumbrava Sibiului” forest, on the road connecting Sibiu and Rășinari, about three kilometres (3) from the city. It contains installations of traditional pre-industrial Romanian folk civilisation. Houses, workshops and building complexes are scattered around a lake among the trees of Dumbrăvii Sibiului.
