Pictures from two years ago at the end of April / beginning of May from the Gradina publica / city park. 27 degrees and the Easter bunny was already there back then 😊

In addition to the "typically German" shopping options such as Lidl, Penny, Kaufland, DM, and many more, there are far more ways to shop in Romania than in Germany and Austria.

So-called "Alimentare" in every village and on almost every corner in the cities (comparable to Edeka stores from 40 years ago) are open 7 days a week, many of them (mostly in the cities) even around the clock, 24 hours a day.

Unlike in Germany and Austria, all supermarkets in Romania are also open daily (including Sundays), usually from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, or from 10:00 AM in shopping centers. Before public holidays or during vacation periods, it can happen that some supermarkets even open 7 days / 24 hours (including the Carrefour supermarket chain from France).

But back to the pictures: throughout the country, there are regular markets (called Piata, comparable to German weekly markets, but in many cities like Galati still held seven times a week and even in every district), which offer fresh goods daily (mostly fruit and vegetables, baked goods, meat, but also many other products) fresh from the region and neighboring or nearby countries (Turkey). Something that makes Romania even more attractive for a holiday... strolling through the market every morning and buying fresh food for the day. Where else in the German-speaking world can you still do that!?

Regarding the prices, the pictures are from March 2023 in LEI (RON) (5 Lei / Ron still correspond to approx. 1 Euro today).

Please note: Prices have partially increased since then depending on the offer/season and, above all, vary greatly by region. The pictures shown are from Galati. The city is quietly located, directly on the Danube (800 meters wide and more) and at the beginning of the Danube Delta (on the border with Ukraine).

Galati is the capital of the district of the same name in Moldova, in southeastern Romania.

It was visited by royal families and was one of the richest cities in Romania. Today it is a well-known port city, near Brăila and it is definitely worth a visit.

In addition to the botanical garden, the zoo, many parks and museums, churches and much more, approx. The 2 1/2 km long promenade on the waterfront, a wonderful view over and to the Danube, which in some places reaches a width of up to 900 meters.

Thousands of roses bloom in June / July in the "Grădina Botanică", the Botanical Garden of Galați.

Galați is a city with about 220,000 to 250,000 inhabitants in the southeast of Romania. Located directly on the Danube, it is the gateway to the Danube Delta and borders Moldova (200 meters further, Ukraine also borders Moldova).

Seen (July), photographed, and immediately googled. The hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum), with its extremely rapid wingbeat (up to 80 beats per second), might at first glance be mistaken for a hummingbird, but it is actually a butterfly (family Sphingidae).

This moth can be found from Spain to Japan, spanning the entire east-west length of the Palearctic region*. Ours hail from Galați (a city in southeastern Romania) and probably speak fluent Romanian 😁

*The Palearctic region refers to an Old World zoogeographical area in biogeography, traditionally encompassing Europe, North Africa, and Asia (excluding the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula), along with the islands adjacent to these areas (Source: Wikipedia).

Photos from December 30, 2020; it was far too warm, with almost every day featuring bright sunshine and a blue sky. Instead of the usual temperatures dropping to -20 degrees from previous years, the year-end transition of 2020/2021 offered temperatures as high as +15 degrees.

40 km north of the city of Galați in southeastern Romania lies the village of Cuca.

Here, there are two churches that are used for different occasions depending on the event.

If you're still planning a holiday in the Danube Delta, Sulina or Galati, it's wonderful here. Up to 27 degrees in the coming week and it seems ... 0% rain and 100% sunshine.

Approach via Bucharest and then via hire car, (shuttle) bus or train to the desired destination. For Sulina you have to travel by boat from Tulcea.

Upstairs, at the highest point of the water shore, with a fantastic view over the Danube, is the church of St. The Precista from Galați.

The church is the oldest building in the city and was consecrated in September 1647, during the reign of Vasile Lupu. The architectural style of the church, which was also used as a defensive fortress, is typical of the architecture of the Romanian church from the 17th century.

Galati is a city with approximately 250,000 to 350,000 inhabitants in southeastern Romania. Located directly on the Danube and with a border with Moldova ( 200 meters further, Ukraine borders Moldova ).

It takes another 2-3 weeks and the lavender fields begin to bloom.

Lavender fields can be found in many regions of Romania, these images were taken last year ( June 2022 ) in the district of Galati.

The city of Galati is located in southeastern Romania, where the Danube slowly widens to the Danube Delta to flow into the Black Sea.

Galati is located a few kilometers from Moldova and also from Ukraine. „ Cliff ” along the Danube ( in the German seafront, but here the promenade on the waterfront ) invites you to take a walk and stay in any season. About 25 km upstream is the nearest town of Brăila.
