More details
The place of worship was built by a local craftsman, a woodcarver (according to the inscriptions in the church, his name was Matei), who also served as a priest.
Around 1813, the interior of the church was painted by the painter Nicolae, and before World War I, the exterior of the church was covered with clay, over which lime was applied. After 1941, when it was abandoned following the construction of a new place of worship, the wooden church was left exposed to the elements. In 1966, conservation and consolidation measures were taken, removing the layer of clay that covered the walls of the church, but the exterior painting could not be saved.
The construction of the church in Troaş is typical of wooden churches from that period and those in the Mureş Valley (stone foundation, walls made of horizontal oak beams, joined at the ends using a “dovetail” fastening system, the roof supports also have a decorative role); the entrance to the church is through two adjacent doors located in the south wall; the main door leads to the nave, and the secondary door to the narthex; the church tower (11.55 m high) harmonizes with the body of the church.
The church in Troaş deserves special attention for the quality of its paintings. Executed in tempera on a layer of plaster, and at the joints of the plank on glued canvas, the painting covers the entire interior of the church, with a complex iconographic program that includes paintings: from the Holy Trinity and Abraham’s Sacrifice – altar, the holy martyrs and several biblical scenes – nave, respectively the Holy Martyrs – narthex.
