Currently open (probably until sometime in mid/end of October) and if you are already here, you should definitely also check out the "neighboring road," the Transalpina.

Our tip for a round trip: Sibiu (Hermannstadt) > towards Avrig / Brasov and then head south onto the Transfagarasan > Curtea de Arges, Arges County > Valcea County > Brezoi and via the Transalpina to Sebes and back to Sibiu. We recommend at least one, if not two or three overnight stays along the way.

Bâlea Lake (also called Bulea Lake) is a glacial lake in the Romanian Carpathians.

It is located in the Făgăraș Mountains along the Transfăgărășan Highway (Transfăgărășan), between the mountains Negoiu and Moldoveanu, the two highest peaks in the Romanian Carpathians. The lake is about 80 km from Sibiu, 70 km from Făgăraș, and 85 km from Curtea de Argeș.

The Făgăraș Mountains (also known as the Fogarascher Mountains, in Romanian Munții Făgăraș) are part of the Southern Carpathians in Romania.

The mountain ridge spans about 70 km in length and 40 km in width. Covering an area of nearly 2,000 square kilometers, the range reaches its highest point at Moldoveanu Peak (west of Brașov) at 2,544 meters.

Please note: The road is normally only passable from the end of June / beginning of July, depending on the snow conditions. However, Lake Balea can be visited all year round by cable car / gondola.

Always beautiful ... and soon to be visited / driven on again. There is still snow at the moment and the Transfagarasan road in the Fagaras Mountains is closed, as is the equally well-known Transalpina.

Lake Balea (Romanian: Lake Balea) is a glacial lake in the Fagaras Mountains in central Romania, Sibiu County. There are two open cottages throughout the year, a weather station and a mountain rescue station (Mountain Rescue). You can reach the lake in summer by car on the Transfagarasan road and for the rest of the year by a cable car „ Balea Cascada ”.
