On the way from Charlotenburg to Buzias, just before the village of Hitias, you cross the Timis River. We were there (July 20, 2025), at the right time to take beautiful photos of a flock of sheep being driven across the river.

A small town in Banat with its own airport... well, actually just with its own airplanes, which probably belong to the owner of the café/restaurant.

Buzias in Timis County is alive with the charm of the past: Emperor Franz Joseph commissioned the construction of a magnificent garden with a round wooden pavilion here for Empress Sissi in 1875 (more about this in a future post).

And for 20 years now, right next to it, there has been La Aeroport, the only airport/airplane restaurant in Romania. Both are definitely worth a visit.

The place is also perfect for children and families, as you can not only enjoy a coffee, ice cream, or more under the airplanes... but one airplane is also ready to take the little guests on a journey into the realm of fantasy ✈️🥰

A plane tree, planted exactly 25 years before the birth of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (nicknamed Sissi) and now already 213 years old (again, the tree).

The tree stands in the city of Buzias in Timis County, in the magnificent garden with a round wooden pavilion, whose construction was commissioned in 1875 by Emperor Franz Joseph for Empress Sissi.

A place with history, a lot of history, and we would love to know what this tree has seen in its lifetime and especially whom it has met 🥰

The journey is the destination, and we saw and experienced a lot on our little trip from Timisoara to Charlotenburg, then to Buzias, and back again.

There is still a lot of peace here in Banat... and you can find Swabian spätzle and maultaschen 🥰 at Schwabenland in Charlotenburg... an airplane café in Buzias... and so much more!

Our visit yesterday took us to the Land of the Swabians, more precisely to the Schwabenland Swabian restaurant in the village of Charlotenburg (the only round village in Romania) in the historical region of Banat, Timis County.

Delicious Swabian specialties (Käsespätzle, Maultaschen soup, ...) in a wonderful, peaceful atmosphere, perfect 🥰

In addition to a beer garden with a Code Playground, there is also a small museum showcasing the Swabian past and present from the region, Banat... the homeland of the Banat Swabians in Romania.

The village of Charlotenburg is located in the historical region of Banat, in Timis County. Charlotenburg (or Sarlota, also Barita) belongs to the commune of Bogda and is the only "round village" in Romania.

The village was founded by 32 families (171 people) who immigrated from Baden-Württemberg, Alsace-Lorraine, and the German-speaking Trentino. Its existence is mainly due to Count Karl-Ignaz von Clary und Aldringen, who was appointed president of the Banat administration in 1769. The village was planned and built in a circular shape, with an inner diameter of 210 meters.

Camping, guesthouse, museum, and much more... Casa Ferch in the town of Deta, just an hour south of Timisoara in western Romania, is DEFINITELY worth a visit.

We visited the house / campsite yesterday. It is run by a couple from Vienna, and we were warmly welcomed and treated... it was pure hospitality and kindness, and... it was perfect!

Over coffee, cake, and lunch, we met many guests and also locals from the region, Austrians, Banat Swabians / from Timisoara, and many more! It felt as if we had always lived there 🥰 Thanks again to Margit, her husband, to the Swabian "Hansi, who has traveled the world," and to everyone we had the pleasure to meet.

Timisoara, always beautiful, and of course we also had to visit our probably biggest fan (May 2025) 🥰. He lives and can be found at Take Five Coffee / Bazara, Strada Lucian Blaga 5, parallel to the street with the umbrellas.

The small café, located in the heart of the city yet on the first quiet side street, is always worth a visit. And besides the very friendly host, you will find there, as seen in the picture, not only our brochure "Urlaub in Rumänien" but also enthusiastic readers of it.

Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly where this “airport” is located, but it must be somewhere around Timisoara / in Timis County. We gladly welcome any information.

But... it’s a really cool idea, you save yourself from mowing the lawn and there’s no space for big trees (which only drop leaves in autumn anyway 😅) 🥰 And you can see a certain freedom that people still have here in Romania. Instead of a development plan (the fence must be green, two apple trees and a cherry tree must be planted)... here you can even put an airplane in your garden. The kids will love it 😁

Today and this weekend (July 4th to 6th), the JAZZx Festival takes place in the city center with top artists, relaxed vibes, and movie-like summer nights. Liberty Square (Piata Libertatii) becomes the main stage for jazz, entry is free, music is live, and the atmosphere will be indescribable.

Lugoj (Hungarian: Lugos, German: Lugosch) is a commune in Timiș County in the historical region of Banat. It consists of the town of Lugoj and the villages of Măguri and Tapia.

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, also known as the "Church with Two Towers," is a Romanian Orthodox church located at Victory Square in Lugoj. Built between 1759 and 1766 in Baroque style, it is one of the most remarkable Baroque buildings in Banat.

On July 19, 2025, the annual church festival of the city of Deta, in the historic Banat region, will take place. The city of Deta is located about 40 km south of Timișoara (just over an hour by car), always along national road 59.

Tradition and customs in the Banat—those who see the pictures without knowing the history of the Danube Swabians might believe they are somewhere in Germany, in the Swabian region. But no, these photos are from Romania.

Images from the Kirchweih festival in the community of Liebling, located in Timiș County in the historic Banat region. In the German communities of Banat, Kirchweih festivals are traditionally celebrated. On this occasion, the beautiful Swabian folk costumes are worn. If you travel through Banat from summer to autumn, visiting a Kirchweih festival is well worth it.
