Sapanta Monastery / Peri | Maramureș County
(30 May 2025)
X

(30 May 2025)
In the north of Romania, in Maramureș County, lies the Sapanta Monastery, also known as Peri Monastery.
In 1391, the grandchildren of Dragos Voda donated the land and goods on which the monastery, a stone church, was built. This stone church served for more than 300 years as the main seat of the Romanian diocese of Maramureș and was later rebuilt by master Ioan Macarie as a place of prayer for the Greek-Catholic community in the region.
The tower of the monastery church is 78 meters high, making it the third tallest church tower in Romania, after the Orthodox Cathedral in Timisoara and St. Michael's Church in Cluj-Napoca.
We thank Vlad the Impaler - Dracula (Photo: Romania in pictures) for allowing us to use this picture.

Pictures from the summer of 2023 from Cluj-Napoca (in German Klausenburg, in Hungarian Kolozsvar) the (probably*) second largest city in Romania and capital of the county of Cluj in Transylvania.
With a population of around 400,000*, Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania region. There are universities, a lively nightlife and many buildings from the times of Hungarian and Saxon rule. Around the main square Piata Unirii are the Gothic St. Michael's Church and an equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus, who lived in the 15th century. The baroque Banffy Palace is now a museum displaying Romanian art.
Cluj-Napoca has an international airport and is located in the north-west of Romania.

Vinga | Arad county | Banat

(05 May 2025)
If you travel on the road (E671) from Timisoara to Arad, you will pass the commune of Vinga (Theresiopolis in German) about 25 km before Arad.
The two churches are very large for such a small community. The Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church, on the left in the picture) and the Roman Catholic Church (Catholic Church, on the right in the picture and in other pictures).
The first documentary mention of Vinga dates back to 1231. After being sacked and destroyed by the Turks, Vinga was resettled in 1737 and 1741 by about 125 families of "Bulgarian-Bavarians" from Cyprovts in western Bulgaria, who crossed the Danube and settled in various parts of the Banat Plain. On 1 August 1744, Vinga was granted the status of a town with a magistrate and various privileges by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.

INFO ROMANIA | Parking in Romanian Cities
(23 March 2025)
X

(23 March 2025)
Many travelers drive to Romania with their own car or rent one at the airport and ... some may feel a bit overwhelmed by parking situations in certain cities. So here are a few tips.
**First of all, don’t copy the creative parking habits of some locals**. Cars can be **towed quickly** (especially in fire zones, in front of hospitals, intersections, pedestrian crossings, etc.), and recovering them requires **cash payment** – but first, you need to find out where your car was taken, which can be a long process 🙈.
# Stress-free parking in Brăila 🥰
Brăila, located in southeastern Romania, has about 150,000 residents. **Parking is always available and completely free, even in the city center**.
# The neighboring city, Galați ... a bit more complicated 😅
Galați, with around 300,000 residents, has **many paid parking zones** (not only downtown). Parking is charged **Monday-Saturday, 08:00-20:00**, and can be paid at parking meters or via SMS (Romanian phone number required). **IMPORTANT**: If you don’t pay, you may quickly find a **wheel clamp** 😅. The unlocking fee is **200-300 Lei (40-60 Euros)** depending on the time of day.
# Brașov – parking requires patience
Finding a parking spot **near the center of Brașov is difficult at any time**. Many streets are one-way, and it takes time to locate an available space. **Parking is charged (Monday-Saturday, 08:00-20:00)** and can be paid at meters, via SMS (per hour, multiple SMS needed – Romanian number required), or via an app (24h tickets available). Paid parking applies citywide, so always check the signs.
# Timișoara, European Capital of Culture 2023 ... going high-tech 😁
Paid parking in the city center is monitored using a **special camera-equipped vehicle** that scans parked cars and checks payment records in real-time. We’re not sure how it works exactly, but … we suspect fines are issued automatically.
# Bucharest … no words 🙈
Parking in Bucharest means **either at the hotel or 20 km outside the city** 😁. The **traffic is intense**, and the **driving style is reminiscent of Italian movies**. Most areas, including downtown, require **paid parking** (via meter, SMS – Romanian number needed, or app). Finding a spot in the **Old Town is extremely difficult**, and private parking can cost up to **300 Lei (60 Euros) for 24h**. **Our advice**: book a hotel with free parking and use taxis, Uber, or public transport instead. It's worth it!
# Small towns & rural areas
Parking here is usually **free and easy** 😊, but check signs near tourist attractions.
# Ignoring a parking fine? 😅
Not a good idea! Most cities **clamp the front wheel** (yellow or orange). The release fee depends on the time of day. **Better pay for parking in advance** – it’s cheaper!
Any parking experiences in Romania? Share your comments!
# And a reminder: RO Vignette
Driving on **Romanian highways and national roads** requires a vignette (Rovinieta). Buy it online **up to a month before your trip**: [https://www.roviniete.ro/de/](https://www.roviniete.ro/de/). Prices:
- 3 Euros / 7 days
- 7 Euros / 30 days
- 13 Euros / 90 days
- 28 Euros / 1 year
Rental cars usually have it included, but double-check.
Safe travels & stress-free parking! 🚗😊

(12 March 2025)
If you want to visit Charlotenburg, you can find this place in the Romanian Banat, Timiș County.
Charlotenburg (or Sarlota, also Barita) is a village in the commune of Bogda, Timiș County. It is the only "round village" in Romania.
The village was founded by 32 families (171 people) who immigrated from Baden-Württemberg, Alsace-Lorraine, and the German-speaking Trentino. Its existence is mainly thanks to Count Karl-Ignaz von Clary and Aldringen, who was appointed President of the Banat Administration in 1769. The village was designed and built in a circular shape, with an inner diameter of 210 meters.
We thank Mr. Frank Schleßmann for providing these images and the corresponding (partial) text/explanation.

Pictures from today and yesterday from Ortisoara, a municipality directly on the county border between Timisoara and Arad. "Luna, apa si timpul" in the west of the commune, lies on a small river and two smaller lakes.
We thank Mr. Uwe Tauber, who is currently there, for the beautiful and current pictures. At the lakes there is a restaurant (quote: "with very friendly innkeepers") and, as you can see on the pictures, there is also a little space for a camper / tent there. According to the Google description, it is an event location / campsite.
