"Romania, day 10 - Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.
The early wake up was worth it. Sunrise boat tour was WOW.
Lazy day at the campsite today, did a bit of cleaning, will continue tomorrow. A few pics of the lovely Danube delta, could have done a lot more. It's hard to believe that last week there were drone attacks 25 km away in a Ukrainian port. But we feel very safe here."

Fortified churches in Transylvania
(26 April 2024)
Transylvania is famous for its more than 160 fortified churches, the history of which dates back to the Middle Ages. At that time, the region was a contested border area. The inhabitants reacted to the threats by fortifying their churches with defensive structures.
The fortifications were extended and rebuilt over the centuries. Many of them have been preserved to this day and form a unique landscape of fortified churches, which is characterized by its special density and diversity of these architectural monuments.

Romania is rich in history and therefore ... just as rich in the corresponding buildings and many stories.
There are still 300 fortified churches in Transylvania alone, as well as fortresses, castles, many fortresses and ruins in large numbers.
We thank the photographers / Facebook groups of the pictures for the permission to use them.

Bukovina (Bucovina) | Moldavian monasteries
(11 April 2024)
The Moldavian monasteries are located in the historical region of Bukovina and were built in the 15th and 16th centuries in the former tower of the ruler of Moldavia.
The monasteries are famous for their magnificent frescoes. Many of the buildings date back to Stephen the Great, who supposedly founded a monastery for every battle won. Eight of them are World Heritage Sites.
The special feature of Moldovan monasteries is their unique colored painting in Europe. The monks also wanted to bring the contents of the Holy Scriptures closer to the people below, who could neither write nor read. Thus, they used the interior walls, facades and protective walls of the monastery to describe scenes and parables from the Bible in colorful drawings, paintings and frescoes. They are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.

"Romania, day 19, the Apuseni Mountains, we pass over passers-by, and therefore we pass very original and simple villages, where rural life and crafts still matter. It all seems peaceful, but we suspect life here is demanding for people. Huge stacks of hay are taken from the fields by cart and horse to be stored. We visit a market and see a knife chopper, a broom maker and many small shops. A man was selling carved spoons. Tomorrow we visit an ice cave. This is part of the Apuseni Nature Park and contains the most compact underground ice block in Europe, with a volume of 75,000 cubic metres and a thickness of up to 26 metres. Let's see what we see. We found another great place to sleep, with a few woofers that we fed."

Sarmale... A magical word and only, DELICIOUS
(05 April 2024)
They are not prepared everywhere in Romania according to the same recipe. Depending on the region and taste of the individual, they also in size vary from one place to another.
Sarmas contains meat wrapped with other ingredients in vine leaves or sauerkraut. Sarmale can be without meat (vegetarian) with vegetables.
We present a special recipe from Moldova with meat filling.
For 1 kg of minced meat (pork, beef, chicken or a mixture) add:
- 4 - 5 medium onions
- 100 grams of rice
- salt, pepper - one teaspoon each
- Dill and parsley - to taste
- Tomato broth (150 grams)
- 4 tablespoons oil (in combination with chicken)
If the meat is lean, add a few tablespoons of breadcrumbs or corn flour to better tie the mixture. Mix the contents well and then wrap it in vine leaves or cabbage, according to your preferences.
Cook for about two (2) hours, placing the sarmale close to each other in a saucepan and adding water. When the liquid in which the sarmale boils is low, add hot water to compensate. Check after the first hour of cooking and then whenever you think it is necessary.
We thank "Mama" Postolache for the recipe and her daughter for work and images.
From the amount of ingredients, about 120 wires are produced. They are usually consumed with sour cream (cream / cream) and hot pepper (chili pepper). Also, depending on the region, white bread and polenta (from maize semolina, similar to Italian polenta) are added.
We wish you good appetite (Bon appetite) 😋🥰

Seen today (March 26) in Braila, the first stork this year that has already started to renovate the nest.
Finally you can see them again... Barza (Romanian for stork), which are now moving in to breed in many, many villages, especially in south-eastern Romania.
Almost every mast, no matter how daring the cable construction may seem, is inhabited by a nest. We will be there live in a few weeks and are already looking forward to many, many wonderful pictures of mom, dad and, above all, the babies of the stork family.

Rural life is very different from urban life. It is characterized by family, hospitality, traditions, hardships and hard work until old age.
And ... it's a happier life than we think. Those who have little, have to worry a little and also about the many daily messages of the world, which we receive per hour on our phone (and in fact we do not need at all) to reach these people less, maybe not at all.
