Timisoara, the first city with electric street lighting in Europe
(07 July 2025)
X

(07 July 2025)
Around 140 years ago, Timișoara / Temeswar already proved its uniqueness as a city in Europe.
On 12 November 1884, nearly 60 kilometers of streets in the city center of Timișoara were electrically illuminated with 731 lamps*. At that time, it was a record in Europe and the second place in the world after New York.
* The number of lamps and kilometers are based on various sources with the same statement found online.
** Of course, the lamps were smaller than the one shown in the picture. This lamp was placed only as a reminder and is no longer used for lighting in Timișoara.

Sapanta Monastery / Peri | Maramureș County
(30 May 2025)

(30 May 2025)
In the north of Romania, in Maramureș County, lies the Sapanta Monastery, also known as Peri Monastery.
In 1391, the grandchildren of Dragos Voda donated the land and goods on which the monastery, a stone church, was built. This stone church served for more than 300 years as the main seat of the Romanian diocese of Maramureș and was later rebuilt by master Ioan Macarie as a place of prayer for the Greek-Catholic community in the region.
The tower of the monastery church is 78 meters high, making it the third tallest church tower in Romania, after the Orthodox Cathedral in Timisoara and St. Michael's Church in Cluj-Napoca.

Pictures from the summer of 2023 from Cluj-Napoca (in German Klausenburg, in Hungarian Kolozsvar) the (probably*) second largest city in Romania and capital of the county of Cluj in Transylvania.
With a population of around 400,000*, Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania region. There are universities, a lively nightlife and many buildings from the times of Hungarian and Saxon rule. Around the main square Piata Unirii are the Gothic St. Michael's Church and an equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus, who lived in the 15th century. The baroque Banffy Palace is now a museum displaying Romanian art.

(05 May 2025)
If you travel on the road (E671) from Timisoara to Arad, you will pass the commune of Vinga (Theresiopolis in German) about 25 km before Arad.
The two churches are very large for such a small community. The Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church, on the left in the picture) and the Roman Catholic Church (Catholic Church, on the right in the picture and in other pictures).
The first documentary mention of Vinga dates back to 1231. After being sacked and destroyed by the Turks, Vinga was resettled in 1737 and 1741 by about 125 families of "Bulgarian-Bavarians" from Cyprovts in western Bulgaria, who crossed the Danube and settled in various parts of the Banat Plain. On 1 August 1744, Vinga was granted the status of a town with a magistrate and various privileges by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.
