The commune of Harman (German: Honigberg) is located in the historical region of Burzenland, about 12 kilometers northeast of the city of Brasov (Kronstadt).

The Hungarian King Andrew II granted Burzenland to the Teutonic Order in 1211, who settled there, built castles, brought German settlers to the land, and founded villages such as Honigberg. After disputes with the king, the order was expelled from Burzenland in 1225, but the German settlements remained.

The bay windows and half-timbered walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the king’s homeland. Seven terraces surround the castle. Part of the 160 rooms can now be visited. The castle museum houses weapons, sculptures, furniture, and decorative objects from the 15th–19th centuries, as well as an orchestrion. The castle is especially impressive for its magnificent woodwork.

The name Halloween comes from the English name for the evening before All Saints’ Day (All Hallows Evening) on November 1, which over the years was simplified and shortened. Irish immigrants probably brought the tradition to the USA a few hundred years ago, and from there, about 30 to 35 years ago, it returned to Europe and then also to Romania.

Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Fortress, in German Burg Eisenmarkt, in Romanian Castelul Corvinilor or Castelul Huniazilor, in Hungarian Vajdahunyadi vár) is one of the most important non‑ecclesiastical buildings in Transylvania.

The stone fortress was built on the remains of a 14th‑century fortification and is located in the southwestern part of the city of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The castle, a listed historic monument, is also known under many other names (Corvin Castle, Castle of the Corvins, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which trace back to its location or owners.

The Hungarian statesman and military leader John Hunyadi transformed an existing fortification after 1440 into the ancestral seat of the Hunyadi family. During the second construction phase, starting in 1458, the castle was expanded under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, further significant modifications were made under Prince Gábor Bethlen. Today, the castle therefore displays a mix of architectural styles.

From 1724 the castle was in Austrian possession, and since 1918 it has belonged to the Romanian state. Aside from being a tourist attraction, the castle has been (and still is) used as a backdrop for numerous Romanian and international film productions. Today, it houses a museum.

Károlyi Castle is a neo-Gothic-Neo-Baroque palace complex in the town of Carei (Gross Karol in German, Nagykároly in Hungarian) in Satu Mare County in northwestern Romania. It was once the ancestral seat of the Hungarian noble family Károlyi von Nagykároly.

The castle with its gardens and museums is open to visitors and hosts several exhibitions.

Short history:
The origins of the castle are in a stone house built in 1482 by Láncz László Károlyi with the permission of King Matthias. Due to its strategic position, the fortress was part of the system of fortifications used against the Turks in the seventeenth century, after the expansion of the fortifications in 1661 and 1666.

This fortress was demolished by József Károlyi in 1794 to build a baroque castle designed by Joseph Bitthauser in its place. There were also several towers of different shapes and sizes. The inner courtyard was covered with a solid wood ceiling and thus transformed into a reception hall. A ditch was also built around the castle.

The village of Posmus was founded by German settlers. Mihaly Teleki (1634–1690), Chancellor of Transylvania, acquired a significant estate in this area around 1680. In the mid-18th century, several dilapidated wooden buildings stood on the site of today’s manor house.

Pal Teleki and Borbala Haller had the building rebuilt in the Baroque style. They commissioned the rectangular shape of the castle: on the sides were the warehouses, the stable, and the prison; at the back, the main building, rebuilt between 1750 and 1752; and at the front, the gate bastion, built around 1760. The gate bastion, which also housed a chapel, was later used as a guest house.

Pictures from these days from Galt (Romanian: Ungra) in Brașov County. On the route from Kronstadt to Schäßburg, a few kilometers before Rupea, you turn about 4 km into a small side valley to Galt. On a hilltop lies the evangelical fortified church. In the former castle guard’s house, a small homeland museum of the Transylvanian Saxons has been set up. In this typical Saxon village, about 30 Germans still live.

Rosenau (Râșnov) is a small town of about 15,000 inhabitants, with a fortress and a Dino Park. In the 14th century the fortress was built above the town on the limestone cliffs. The Râșnov Dino Park is only 200 metres from the back of the fortress (as shown in the picture). Nothing stands in the way of a wonderful family day.

In 1211 King Andrew II called. from Hungary The Teutonic Knights in support of the Kumans in the country to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them many privileges, including immunity, the right to self-government, and the construction of stone fortresses to ensure the environment. In 1838, the city of Marienburg (Romanian name: Feldioara) was severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the ruins of the castle were renovated and largely rebuilt.

This castle, also called Sturdza Palace, was built in its current form between 1880 and 1904 by Gheorghe Sturdza and his wife Maria in the village of Miclauseni. It is located in the northeast of Romania, about 65 km from the city of Iasi.

The building was erected at the end of the 19th century on the site of a boyar's house, and the exterior walls were decorated with numerous reliefs. The castle is equipped with marble staircases, rosewood furniture, terracotta and porcelain stoves. It has an extensive library and several collections, including medieval weapons and costumes from the 16th century. It can be visited daily and is also available for weddings and events.

In the Ilfov district, a few kilometers northwest of Bucharest ( the capital of Romania ), Mogosoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogosoaia, in Mogosoaia.

The castle contains a main courtyard and many buildings, such as the watchtower and the church „ Saint George ” near the courtyard.

Wallachian Prince Constantin Brancoveanu had the castle built between 1698 and 1702 on the estate of the widow Mogos ( from which the name Mogosoaia ) later derives in the Brancoveanu architecture style named after him.
In 1714, when Constantin Brancoveanu and his entire family were executed in Constantinople, the Ottomans confiscated the entire family fortune and turned the palace into an inn ( a kind of inn ).

In the following decades, the castle was conquered, destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly, until it became the property of George III in 1912. Valentin Bibesco arrived, who was married to the French writer Marthe Bibesco from the Romanian nobility. He gave the estate to his wife, and Marthe Bibesco restored the castle at sea.

The fortress was built as part of a defense system for the Transylvanian villages. The present medieval fortress was probably built between 1211 and 1225, during the rule of the Teutonic Knights in Burzenland.

The castle was in Austrian possession from 1724 and has been in Romanian state ownership since 1918. In addition to being a tourist attraction, the castle has been and is used as a backdrop for numerous Romanian and international film productions. Today, the castle houses a museum.

The Castelul de Lut Valea Zanelor is located about 40 km from Sibiu (towards Brasov) in the village of Porumbacu de Sus.

Șiria (in Hungarian Világos, in German Hellburg) is a commune in Arad County.

On the territory of today’s commune, there was already a settlement called “Villa Siri” in 1169. Vilagosvar was mentioned in documents in 1326, referring to the Vilagos fortress, today the Șiria castle ruins.

Part of Șiria’s history is the story of the 13th-century castle ruins. In 1444, the fortress briefly came into the possession of John Hunyadi, and in the second half of the 15th century, it passed to Matthias Corvinus. For strategic reasons, the Habsburg army destroyed the fortress in 1784.

Today, the castle ruins are a popular excursion destination 🥰

At the end of August 2025, the city of Craiova (in the southwest of Romania, Dolj County) transforms for a week into a magical stage for the Puppets Occupy Street Festival. A festival with giant puppets, street performers, fantastic creatures, and over 400 free events.

Nature lovers will also find plenty to enjoy in this region: Craiova has 800 hectares of green space, including the largest natural park in Central and Eastern Europe, with 100 hectares (Nicolae Romanescu Park). With lakes, waterfalls, a fairytale castle, a suspension bridge, a zoo, a hippodrome, and a velodrome. Urban nature at its finest!

The village of Viscri (German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in the district of Brasov (Kronstadt) in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town/castle of Rupea (German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighișoara (German: Schäßburg). The village had about 700 inhabitants between the 18th and 20th centuries, mainly Transylvanian Saxons, plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterised both by the fortified church and the village structure, which was shaped by Saxon farms.

The village was founded by the Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in a document from 1185. The fortified church stands at the north-western end of the village.

Brasov (in German Kronstadt) is probably the best-known city (after Bucharest) in Romania. It is located in the historical region of Transylvania, on the northern side of the Carpathian Mountains, close to the famous castle of Count Dracula... Bran, known in German as Törzburg.

The stone castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the southwestern part of the city of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

Peles Castle is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the city of Sinaia, which lies on the route from Bucharest to Brasov (and of course vice versa), in the Prahova Valley, nestled between the Bucegi Mountains.

Beautiful pictures from the evening before last from the city of Deva (in German Diemrich), here the Reformed Church. The Calvinist church is a monument of Gothic architecture. It was built between 1456 and 1526 in the late Gothic style, and in 1643 the slender, 71-meter-high tower was later added / erected.

Deva is the county seat of Hunedoara County, known for the Deva Fortress which sits high on the city’s hilltop, and is only a few kilometers from Corvin Castle / Hunedoara.

The Sturdza Palace was built in its current form between 1880 and 1904 by Gheorghe Sturdza and his wife Maria in the village of Miclauseni. It is located in the northeast of Romania, about 65 km from the city of Iasi.

The building was erected at the end of the 19th century on the site of a boyar’s house, and the exterior walls were decorated with numerous reliefs. The castle is equipped with marble staircases, rosewood furniture, terracotta and porcelain stoves. It has an extensive library and several collections, including medieval weapons and costumes from the 16th century. It can be visited daily and also rented for weddings and events.

Once a popular excursion spot, today a beautiful restaurant (open daily from 10:00 to 22:00, reservation required) in the Valley of the Fairies.

A beautiful picture of Cantacuzino Castle. At an altitude of 1,000 meters, the castle built in 1911 by Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino rises majestically in the city of Busteni (Prahova County), right in front of the 2,500-meter-high Bucegi Mountains.

The 6-hectare (60,000 m2) castle park invites you to linger and is now one of the most visited attractions in the Prahova Valley. The castle, the sculpture park, and the terrace, with their breathtaking views, attract thousands of visitors every year.

This is not really true, but from a tourist perspective, Bran Castle is one of the best-developed attractions in Romania. Especially in the summer months, buses bring visitors from almost every nationality in the world to this place.

A lot has happened in recent years, and Corvin has developed, in addition to the magnificent castle, into a history museum with many galleries.

Pelisor Castle is located about 300 meters from „ Big Brother ”, Peles Castle in Prahova District.

The castle was built between 1899 and 1902 by the architect Karel Liman ( chalet style ), commanded by King Carol I ( Charles I ) for his nephew, later King Ferdinand I, and his wife, Queen Marie of Romania.

The fortress of Brasov (in German Kronstadt) is a fortification built in the 15th century on Straja Hill (Castle Hill) to repel enemy attacks.

Throughout its history, it has been attacked and rebuilt time and again, and was even an important point of defense during the First World War. Originally, there was only the fortress tower. From 1630-1631 the outer fortress was built. The horseshoe-shaped central tower has three floors and served several purposes over the centuries: it was used as a storehouse, was a prison for Turkish prisoners in the 18th century, and was also used as a fortress.

In the 18th century it was a prison for Turkish prisoners and later, during the plague, a special ward was set up for the sick.

On the way from Sibiu to Brașov lies the city of Făgăraș. At the end of the 12th century, the city's castle was only a wooden fortress, which was expanded into a stone fortress in the 14th century.

The castle houses a museum, which can be visited along with the fortress. Right next to the fortress is the cathedral / church of Saint John the Baptist.

Sinaia is a town in Prahova County, located in the valley of the Prahova River, surrounded by the Bucegi Mountains.

From Sinaia (elevation: 767–860 meters), a cable car takes visitors up to an altitude of 2,000 meters, and several ski lifts operate during the winter.

Many attractions can be found in and around Sinaia, such as the Sinaia Monastery, Peleș Castle, and the smaller Pelișor Castle. Also nearby are Bucegi National Park, Caraiman Monastery, and Cantacuzino Castle in the nearby town of Bușteni.

The listed castle bears many other names ( Corvin Castle, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle ) which can be traced to its location or that of its owners.

The statesman and leader of the Hungarian army, Johann Hunyadi, rebuilt an existing fortification after 1440 to become the ancestral castle of Hunyadis. In the second phase of construction, the castle was expanded in 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. In the 19th century, Prince Gabor Bethlen made other major changes to the building. Therefore, the current castle has a mixture of different architectural styles.

We start at the end, but at the beginning we want to thank the Zitzmann family, who allowed us not only to use the pictures of the trip (end of September 2023), but also to take over the experiences. Thank you

"We drive the Transalpina, but after a few hours we realize that we miss the beautiful part. Google talks about blockage, missing guard rails and that the road was never finished...well, we let it come to that, turn around, drive back (the Transalpina is somehow divided in two) 100erte Schwammerlsucher pull 1000s of kilos of mushrooms from the forest, in large vats that we know from the grape harvest. Incredibly which quantities there are.

We find a great place to sleep, one may drive the road only from 8-18 clock...well we stand anyway, and do not drive. In Romania it is apparently no matter, locals drive around of course also after 18 o'clock, dig for stones, etc.. In the morning then a flock of sheep near us, still spend a lot of time in the wonderful mountain area, to finally arrive in the afternoon at the castle in Hunedoara to visit it."

Iulia Hasdeu Castle is located in the small town of Câmpina in Prahova County.

The Iulia Hasdeu Castle was built by historian and politician Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu in the form of a small fortress. Construction began in 1893 after Hasdeu's daughter, Iulia Hasdeu, died at the age of 19, an event that deeply shattered Hasdeu's life. He claimed that his deceased daughter provided the plans for the castle's construction during spiritualism sessions. The building was completed in 1896.

Stories tell that the castle is profoundly eerie. There are rooms specifically designed for spiritualist rituals, complete with seating for spirits. Many claim that Hasdeu (the father) did not build the castle to honor his daughter Iulia but to worship Satan. Others report seeing Iulia's ghost, haunting the castle to this day, dressed in white and adorned with daisies.

Since 1994, the Iulia Hasdeu Castle has housed the "B.P. Hașdeu" Memorial Museum, which displays the furniture and personal belongings of the Hașdeu family, including photos, original documents, manuscripts, reviews by Hasdeu, and paintings by Nicolae Grigorescu and Sava Henția.

Peles Castle is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of Sinaia, Prahova County.

It was built between 1873 and 1883 by order of King Carol I of Romania and confiscated by the communist regime in 1947. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, Peles was transferred to the Swiss exile, the former King Michael.

The golf windows and the half-wood walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the king's house. Some of the 160 rooms are now open to the public, and the castle museum contains weapons, sculptures, furniture and decorative objects from the 15th century. - nineteenth century, as well as an orchestra. The castle impresses with its magnificent wooden crafts.

We climbed (on foot) to Deva Fortress (Castle) (Diemrich Castle) with a great view over Deva (German name Diemrich) in Transylvania (Transylvania) in mid-August 2023.

The Rupea Fortress / Castle (first mentioned in 1324, German name: Burg Reps) is located near the town of Rupea, halfway between Brașov and Sighișoara, in the northern part of Brașov County.

Rupea Fortress served as a refuge for the population of the surrounding villages from repeated sieges by the Turks and Tatars. It was built in 1324 during the Saxon uprising against the Hungarian King Charles Robert of Anjou.

Later, the inhabitants added three defense towers and two inner courtyards to the original structure, which served as shelters. In the first courtyard, there is a 59-meter-deep well that still provides water today.

The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th century fortification and is located in the south-western part of the town of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The listed castle has many other names (Corvinilor Castle, Castle of the Corvinians, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Iron Market Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which can be traced back to its location or its owners.

After 1440, the Hungarian statesman and military commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification converted into the ancestral castle of the Hunyadis. In the second construction phase, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, Prince Gábor Bethlen carried out further major alterations to the building. Today's castle therefore features a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle was in Austrian hands from 1724 and has been Romanian state property since 1918. As well as being an attraction for tourists, the castle is (and has been) used as a backdrop for a number of Romanian and international film productions. The castle now houses a museum.

Deva Castle (or Diemrich Castle, in Romanian Cetatea Deva) is located in the town of Deva (Diemrich) in Hunedoara County in western Romania.

Marienburg from Feldioara (Romanian name of Marienburg) is a medieval castle of the Teutonic Order in the region of Transylvania in the district of Brașov.

It offers a wonderful view of the surrounding area and the mountains of Brașov (German name: Kronstadt), it is approx. 20 kilometers away from Brașov on the way to Sighișoara ( in German: Schäßburg) and was built on a hill (almost 500 meters above sea level).

In 1211 King Andrew II called. from Hungary The Teutonic Knights in support of the Kumans in the country to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them many privileges, including immunity, the right to self-government, and the construction of stone fortresses to ensure the environment. In 1838, the city of Marienburg (Romanian name: Feldioara) was severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the ruins of the castle were renovated and largely rebuilt.

Timișoara (also known as Timișoara or Timișoara Castle) is located in western Romania, in the historical region of Banat and is the capital of Timișș county.

The city of Buzau is located on the river of the same name and the southeastern foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in southeastern Romania.

In the first place of the town's landmarks is the Palatul Comunal (historically Municipal Palace, today Town Hall), which was built in 1903. It is a castle-like building in the typical Romanian Brancoveanu style, like many city theaters and and other buildings of that period.

About 20 kilometers northwest of Buzau, there are, among others, the mud volcanoes of Berca, one of the most extraordinary natural sights in Romania and in Europe.

Bran Castle was originally a defensive military fortress built on a rock and had a rectangular plan.

Over time, many structural changes were made to the fortress, including the south tower, built in 1622 according to Gabriel Bethlen's plans, the rectangular tower to the east, and between 1883 and 1886 the roof was also made of tile.

Images from July 2023 of the currently closed Clay Castle. It is located about 40 km from Sibiu (towards Brașov) in the village of Porumbacu de Sus.

Construction began in 2014, and by the summer of this year, the "Clay Castle," which looks like it was built for hobbits, was admired by hundreds of visitors daily.

In the small town of Bran, next to Bran Castle (also known as the Castle of Count Dracula), lies the Branean Village Museum.

The museum was established in 1962 in the Bran Castle park and is part of the medieval customs museum. It features 18 households and dwellings, outbuildings, agricultural structures, and hydraulic wood and wool processing installations from past eras.

Rasnov is located about 20 km from Brasov (Kronstadt), on the way to the village / castle of Bran.

Rasnov is a small town with about 15 thousand inhabitants. inhabitants, a fortress and a dinosaur park. The castle was built in the 14th century on the limestone cliffs above the town. Banffy Castle in the municipality of Bonțida ( Hungarian: Bonchidai Banffy-kastély ) is known as Versailles in Transylvania and is an architectural style ensemble built by the Banffy family in the municipality of Bontida, Cluj County.

The nucleus of the building complex reflects the Renaissance, subsequent additions and conversions took place in the eighteenth century. 18th century in Baroque style and 19th century in classicist and romantic style ( neo-Gothic gallery from 1855 ).

A fairytale place in Avrig (Freck in German), located a few kilometers southeast of Sibiu.

Bran Castle (also known as Törzburg, Romanian Castelul Bran, Hungarian Törcsvar) is located in the Transylvania region of Romania.
Regardless of whether Dracula (or his namesake "Vlad III Draculea") lived here or elsewhere, the castle is definitely a sight worth seeing and worth a visit with its museum.

From 1920-1947 it was the royal residence of King Ferdinand I and his wife Queen Maria and their daughter Princess Ileana, who inherited the castle from her mother in 1938. Today, the castle is owned by the Habsburg family, who received it back as legal property from the Romanian state in 2006 as part of the succession process.

Rupea Fortress ( in German: Repser Burg ) is located near the town of Rupea ( in German: Reps ), approx. 50 km from Brașov ( Kronstadt ) - on the road to Târgu Mureș - and is one of the oldest castles in Romania.

The village of Viscri (German: Deutsch-Weisskirch) is located in the county of Brasov in Transylvania.

It lies to the north-west of the town/castle of Rupea (German: Reps) and to the south-east of the town of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg). The village had around 700 inhabitants between the 18th and 20th centuries, mainly Transylvanian Saxons plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterised by both the fortified church and the village structure, which was shaped by Saxon farms.

Törzburg (Romanian for Bran Castle, Hungarian for Törcsvár) is located in the Transylvania region, Brasov county of Romania.

Trascăului Fortress, also called Colțești Fortress, is located west of Colțești village and about 5 km southwest of Rimetea (Iron Castle) in Alba County. It was built around 1296 by the voivode (title of military commander or Slavic ruler) Thorotzkay from Trascău as a habitable and refuge fortress.

In 1713 the fortress was conquered and "destroyed" by the Austrian House of Habsburg. Centuries have passed since this devastation, but some of the walls and two standing towers are well preserved and offer a wonderful backdrop to the unique landscape of Transylvania.

Măgura is a village in Brașov County (Kronstadt) and part of the Moieciu commune in Transylvania.

It is located in the eastern part of the Piatra Craiului Mountains, approximately six kilometers west of Bran Castle.

Castelu Reginei Maria din Feldioara (Romanian name for Marienburg) is a medieval castle of the Teutonic Order in the Transylvania region of Brașov County.
