At about 360,000 square meters, the “Palace of Parliament” is not only the second largest building in the world (after the Pentagon in Washington) with its total weight, it is also number 1 in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Among other things, 1,000,000 cubic meters of marble, 3,500 tons of crystal, 700,000 tons of steel and bronze, 900,000 cubic meters of wood and 200,000 square meters of carpet were processed. There are around 1,000 rooms in the palace, not counting corridors, corridors, staircases and 40 elevators.
The building, which dates back to the days of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, is definitely worth a visit, whether you like this “architectural style” or not.

The statue of the Dacian king Decebal (circa 86 – 106 AD) is 55 meters high and is the largest/highest rock sculpture in Europe.
It is located on a rock formation of the Almăj Mountains on the Danube bank, near the village of Dubova (Mehedinți County) in the Iron Gates Natural Park (Parcul Natural Porțile de Fier).
It took 10 years, a million US dollars and 12 sculptors to create it… and it may not have been designed by the Dacian king himself, but commissioned by a Romanian businessman and historian between 1994 and 2004.

The shoemakers’ tower, first mentioned in documents in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 after the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prism with unequal sides.
The jagged roof with two observation towers on the south and north sides gives it a distinctive appearance. The stone tablet with the oldest coat of arms of the town and the motto “Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (in translation: The name of the Lord is the strongest castle), which is kept in the History Museum in the town of Sighisoara (Schäßburg in German), comes from this tower.
After World War II, the appearance of the tower underwent some changes. The windows were widened and the entrance modified, as was the exterior staircase added in later years.

Just outside Cluj-Napoca (German: Klausenburg), in north-western Romania, lies the Hoia Baciu Forest, one of the most visited forests in the world, also known as Romania’s Bermuda Triangle.
Why? Over the decades there have been hundreds of reports of paranormal activity, ranging from cell phone outages, sightings of balls of light and ghosts, to people and animals disappearing and returning years later.
Hoia Baciu Forest takes its name from a shepherd in the region who disappeared into the forest with his flock of sheep. Another story tells of a five-year-old girl who went into the forest and five years later came back wearing the same clothes and not looking a day older. Many stories are about a glade in which nothing grows and although scientists have examined the land and determined that all is well.
And whether you’re looking for the supernatural or just an interesting hike, this forest is a fascinating and unique place and definitely worth a visit.

“Dragobetele” is a traditional Romanian holiday celebrated on February 24 (today). Dragobete was the son of Baba Dochia, who is the main character in the myth about the coming of spring and the end of the harsh winter. Because of his endless goodness, he was chosen as the keeper of love.
The day is especially known as ‘the day the birds are engaged’. This is when birds begin to build their nests and mate. On this day, which is considered the first day of spring locally, boys and girls gather spring flowers and sing together. The girls gather the snow that lies on the ground in many villages and then melt it, using the water in potions for the rest of the year.

Sarmalele are not made to the same recipe everywhere in Romania. Depending on the region and taste, they vary from one locality to another, and also in size.
Sarmalele contain meat that is wrapped with other ingredients in vine leaves or pickled cabbage. Salsals can also be meatless (vegetarian) or with vegetables. Here is a special recipe from Moldova with meat stuffing.
To 1 kg of minced meat (pork, beef, chicken or a mixture) add:
– 4-5 medium onions
– 100 grams of rice
– salt, pepper – 1 teaspoon each
– dill and parsley – to taste
– tomato broth (150 grams)
– 4 tablespoons oil (in combination with the chicken)
If it’s lean meat, a few tablespoons of breadcrumbs or cornflour can be added to bind the mixture better. Mix well and then wrap in vine or cabbage leaves, depending on preference.
Cook for about two (2) hours. To do this, place the sarmals close together in a pot and pour water over them. When the liquid in which the sarm runs out, add hot water to compensate. Check after the first hour of boiling and then whenever you feel necessary.
The recipe matches the pictures. Thank you “Mom” Postolache for the recipe and to her daughter for the work and pictures.
Amount of ingredients makes about 120 sarmale. They are usually eaten with sour cream (sour cream/cream) and chili peppers (hot peppers). Also, depending on the region, white bread and mamaliga (made from corn semolina, similar to Italian polenta) are served.
We wish you Pofta Buna (Bon appétit).

The fortress/castle of Rupea (first mentioned in 1324, German name: Castelul Reps) is close to the town of Rupea, halfway between Brasov and Sighisoara, in the northern part of Brasov county.
Rupea Fortress was a refuge for the population of the neighboring villages from the repeated siege of the Turks and Tatars. It was built in 1324 during the Saxon rebellion against the Hungarian king Carol Robert of Anjou. Later, the inhabitants added three defensive towers and two inner courtyards, which served as shelters. In the first courtyard there is a 59-meter deep well, which still flows water today.

Just 18 km west of Sighetu Marmatiei is the “Merry Cemetery”, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the Maramureș region.
The crosses, which have been painted by local craftsmen, are lively and predominantly blue in color.
The idea for the cemetery was born in 1935 and belonged to the woodcarver Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a unique cemetery in Romania, showing the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has an image carved on the top, representing a special moment in the life of the deceased. Below, short humorous poems or rhyming texts describe the life of the person buried there.

Râșnov (Rosenau) is about 20 km from Brasov, on the road to Bran Castle.
Rosenau (Râșnov) is a small town of about 15 Tds. It has a fortress and a dinosaur park. In the 14th century a castle was built above the town on limestone cliffs. In 1623 and 1640, an 80 fathom (about 140 meters) deep well was built in the castle, which, according to legend, was built by two Turkish soldiers, prisoners of war, in 17 years. In exchange for building the well, the two prisoners were promised their freedom after its completion.
The Rasnov Dinopark is located right next to the fortress. So nothing stands in the way of a wonderful family outing.

The Bucegi Mountains are home to a multitude of animals. Here you can find bears, foxes, deer, lynx and wild boar. Golden eagles, griffon vultures, griffon vultures, capercaillie and ravens, trout, black grouse and black grouse are also native to the waters.

Romania is one of the most diverse countries in Europe in terms of flora and fauna.
The flora and fauna is original and diverse, and as well as bears (two thirds of Europe’s bear population live in the forests here), with a bit of luck you might see wild boars, foxes and owls during the day. The experience of encountering humans in this region or seeing tracks left by a wild boar on a tree, bear tracks in the grass, a young bear or small Ural owls is unforgettable.
These pictures (autumn 2020) were taken in the Piatra Craiului National Park (German: Königstein, counties Brasov and Arges) by Mr. Udo Krauss, who made them available to us. Thank you for this, Mr. Krauss works as a tour guide and leads small groups on day or multi-day tours in this area (if you are interested: Mr. Krauss speaks German and can be contacted at carpatmountains@gmx.de).
Important information: please note that an ‘encounter’ with a wild bear can be very dangerous. Never try to lure these animals (not even from the roadside in your car) and only hike in the woods with experienced tour guides.

One church (Radu Negru) was built around 1300, the second church around 1600 and restored in 1640. In 1827, one of the churches as it is today was rebuilt in stone and brick.
This church is also visited for its sulphurous water springs, which have beneficial effects on the body. The name of the hermitage “La Jgheaburi” was given by the locals on the basis of these springs.

137.5 years ago, Timisoara / Temeswar already proved its uniqueness as a city in Europe.
On November 12, 1884, almost 60 kilometers of streets in downtown Timisoara were electrically illuminated with 731 lamps*. At the time, this was the record in Europe and second in the world after New York.
* The number of lamps and kilometers are based on different sources with the same statement on the internet.
** Of course the lamps were smaller than the one in the picture.
This lamp is just a memory and is no longer used for lighting in Timisoara.

The church is located in the commune of Biertan in the county of Sibiu in Transylvania. Biertan belongs to the first German-Saxon settlements and was already documented in 1398 (other sources: 1402).
Like every settlement in Saxony, it stands out with a row of villages, emphasized by a central square above which rises the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the residence of Bishop Saxon (episcopal see of the Evangelical Church A.B.), who fostered the building of one of the largest peasant communities in Sieburgen around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, definitely worth a visit.
