Marienburg Castle in Feldioara (the Romanian name of the village of the same name, Marienburg) is a medieval castle of the Teutonic Order in the Transylvanian region, county of Brasov.
It offers a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside and the mountains of Brasov (German: Kronstadt), is located about 20 kilometers from Brasov on the road to Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg) and was built on a hill (about 500 meters above sea level).
In 1211, King Andrew II of Hungary called the Teutonic Knights into the country to support him against the Cumans and to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them numerous privileges, including immunity, the right to autonomy and the building of stone fortresses to secure the surrounding area. In 1838, the town of Marienburg (Romanian name: Feldioara) and Ordensburg Marienburg were severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the castle ruins were largely renovated and rebuilt.

Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal see of the Evangelical Church A.B.), which fostered the building of one of the largest agricultural communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure of Romania, definitely worth a visit.

The Museum of the History of the City and County of Brasov was established in 1950 and is located in the former town hall in the center of the Council Square and partly in the Weavers’ Bastion in Brasov.
The Bastion, defended and maintained by the cloth weavers guild, was built in two stages, between 1421 – 1436 and 1570 – 1573. In the first phase, the first two levels of the three battle galleries were built. The upper galleries, built between 1570 and 1573, were intended for small caliber weapons, which could be used through narrow, circular firing holes along the entire length of the galleries. Two watchtowers were erected for the guard, which kept watch over the town both from a military point of view and from the point of view of keeping watch for possible fires.
After restoration, the Weber Bastion was turned into a museum.

In Ilfov County, just a few kilometers northwest of Bucharest (Romania’s capital), Mogosoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogosoaia, in the commune of Mogosoaia.
The castle contains a main courtyard and several buildings, such as the watchtower and the church of St. George near the courtyard.
The Wallachian Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu had the castle built between 1698 and 1702 on the estate of the widow Mogos (from which the later name Mogosoaia derives) in the Brâncoveanu architectural style that bears his name.
In 1714, when Constantin Brâncoveanu and his entire family were executed in Constantinople, the Ottomans confiscated the entire family fortune and turned the palace into an inn (a kind of inn).
In the following decades, the palace was conquered, destroyed and rebuilt several times, until in 1912 it came into the possession of George III Valentin Bibesco, married to the French writer Marthe Bibesco, who came from Romanian nobility. He gifted the property to his wife, and Marthe Bibesco then had the castle largely restored.

Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Castle, Iron Market Castle in German, Corvin Castle or Huniazilor Castle in Romanian, Vajdahunyadi var in Hungarian) is one of the most important non-ecclesiastical buildings in Transylvania.
The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the south-western part of Hunedoara (German: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.
The listed castle has many other names (Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinus, Castelul Corvinus, Castel Corvinești, Castel Corvin Castle, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Piața de Fier, Castelul Negru, Castelul Vajdahunyad, Castelul Hunyadi), which can be attributed to its location or its owners.
After 1440, the Hungarian statesman and military commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification transformed into the ancestral castle of the Hunyadi family. In the second phase of construction, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, Prince Gabor Bethlen carried out another major remodeling of the building. As a result, today’s castle is a mixture of different architectural styles.
The castle has been in Austrian hands since 1724, and since 1918 it has been Romanian state property. Apart from being a tourist attraction, the castle is (and has been) used as a backdrop for a number of Romanian and international film productions. The castle currently houses a museum.

Tismana is a small town in the Romanian region Muntenia, in Gorj county, in south-western Romania.
The town is known for the Romanian Orthodox monastery of Tismana, the oldest monastery still existing in Muntenia.
Prince Radu II built a monastery here in 1377, which was rebuilt in 1495 (as it had fallen into disrepair). The town (Tismana has been a town since 2004) developed around the monastery in the 15th-16th centuries and is now an important Romanian center for the wood industry.

The statue of the Dacian king Decebalus (in Romanian Decebal, c. 86-106 AD) is 55 meters high and is the largest / tallest stone sculpture in Europe.
It is located on a rock formation in the Almaj Mountains, on the banks of the Danube, near the commune of Dubova (Mehedinți County), in the Iron Gates Natural Park (Parcul Natural Porțile de Fier).
It took 10 years, a million US dollars and 12 sculptors to create it… and was commissioned not by the Dacian king himself, as may have been thought, but by a Romanian businessman and historian between 1994 and 2004.

At the beginning of September, cross the new bridge from Brăila over the Danube, continue for about 15 km to Macin and continue straight ahead for about 500 meters after passing the end of the village.
Then turn left from the main road to the Izvorul Tămăduirii Monastery (also Macin Monastery) and as soon as you turn left again towards the monastery, park on the right and walk right … into the Macin mountains.
Butterflies, lizards, a tortoise and lots and lots of nature all the way to the top of Vraju, (probably) the highest point in the mountains, 335 meters above sea level. A marvelous view over the monastery and the surrounding landscape towards the Danube Delta, Brăila and Galați, including the new bridge over the Danube, rewards the ascent in the afternoon, when it is still around 28 degrees.
Duration of the ascent/descent hike: 4 hours, the last 30-45 minutes are rockier and therefore good footwear is a must. The hiking trails are well signed and easy to follow/find.

Rupea Fortress / Rupea Castle (first mentioned in 1324, German name: Burg Reps) is located near the town of the same name, Rupea, halfway between Brasov and Sighisoara, in the northern part of Brasov County.
Rupea Fortress was a refuge for the population of the neighboring villages in the face of repeated sieges by the Turks and Tatars. It was built in 1324 during the Saxon uprising against the Hungarian king Carol Robert of Anjou.
The inhabitants later added three defense towers and two inner courtyards to the first building, which served as a shelter. In the first courtyard is a 59 meter deep well, which still carries water today.

It lies northwest of the town/castle of Rupea (German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighișoara (German: Schäßburg). The village had about 700 inhabitants between the 18th and 20th centuries, mainly Transylvanian Saxons plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterized by both the fortified church and the village structure, which was shaped by the Saxon farms.
Viscri is/became famous through King Charles III, who owns a house/estate here and regularly visits the village.
The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in a document from 1185. The fortified church stands at the north-western end of the village.
In the 12th century, the Seclavs (a Hungarian-speaking population group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here before the German settlers. This was extended in the 13th century. After the first Turkish invasions, the church was fortified in the 14th century and a fortified ring with defense towers was erected.

Do you know the hotel made of ice on Balea Lake? Not yet… then it’s time for a trip next winter
The hotel is rebuilt every year and simply melts down again in early summer. However, thanks to its location (at 2,034 meters, in the Făgăraș Mountains, Sibiu County), cold and long winters are guaranteed and, besides the wonderful winter scenery, it is another attraction of this region.
Balea Lake can be reached by cable car / gondola (3.7 km, Monday to Sunday, between 09:00 and 17:00). The gondola runs from the Balea waterfall (Balea Cascada Hut). It usually opens in mid/late December and has a season of about 4 months (depending on weather and winter conditions).

The Church of St. Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County in western Romania, is the oldest stone church in the country.
It was built in its present form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple, using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. Inside the church there are 15th-century murals depicting Jesus in traditional Romanian clothes.
According to Romanian historians, there was once a Dacian temple on the site of the present church, which was built for the god Zamolxis. Later conquered by the Romans, they built another temple dedicated to the god Mars. Given its later prehistory, the origin of this church in Densuș dates back to the 4th century AD and is therefore considered to be the oldest church in Romania and south-eastern Europe.

The Black Church (Black Church) is a Gothic hall church in the city of Brasov (Kronstadt in German) in Transylvania.
It was originally a Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. With the Reformation in Transylvania, driven largely from the Transylvanian Saxon population by the reformer and later Kronstadt parish priest Johannes Honterus, the Catholic patronage was abandoned. The Black Church took its present name from a fire in the town in 1689.

Carta Monastery (Kerz in German) is a former Cistercian/Bened Benedictine monastery in Sibiu county, Transylvania.
It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, between the cities of Sibiu and Făgăraș, and is now an evangelical Lutheran church. The exact date of the foundation of Carta Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown.
A document from Constanta, dated April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built and granted rights and privileges by its predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th-15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the founding year of the monastery as around 1202-1203.
