Pigeon tail … from Galati
(27 July 2021 / Images: July 2021)
Saw, photographed and googled yesterday. The dovetail (Macroglossum stellatarum) suggests at first glance, because of the extremely rapid beating of its wings (up to 80 beats per second), that it looks like a hummingbird, although it is a butterfly (family of hummingbird). This butterfly can be found from Spain to Japan along the entire east-west length of the Palearctic * … ours come from Galati (a city in southeastern Romania) and therefore probably speak fluent Romanian
* The Palearctic region, also called Palearctica, describes in biogeography a zoogeographic region of the Old World that traditionally includes Europe, North Africa and Asia (except for the front and back of India and the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula), and the islands in front of these areas (source: Wikipedia)

Bucovina – Moldovan monasteries
(23 July 2021)
The Moldavian monasteries are located in Bucovina and were built in the 15th and 16th centuries in what was then the Princely Tower of Moldavia. The monasteries are famous for their magnificent frescoes. Many of the buildings go back to Stephen the Great, who is believed to have founded a monastery for every battle he won. Eight are part of the world cultural heritage. The special thing about Moldovan monasteries is their colorful painting, which is unique in Europe. The monks also wanted to bring the contents of the Holy Scriptures closer to the people down below, who could neither read nor write. And so they used the monastery’s interior walls, facades and protective walls to depict scenes and parables from the Bible in colorful drawings, paintings and frescoes. They are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.

St. Nicholas Church in Densuș
(7 July 2021)
The Church of St. Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County in western Romania is the oldest stone church in the country. It was built in its present form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. There are 15th-century murals in the church, showing Jesus in traditional Romanian clothes.
According to Romanian historians, there was once a Dacian temple on the site of today’s church, which was built for the god Zamolxis. Later conquered by the Romans, they again built a temple there, which was dedicated to the god Mars. Given its later prehistory, the origins of this church in Densuș date back to the 4th century AD and it is therefore the oldest church in Romania and South-Eastern Europe.

Romania’s haunted forest, Hoia Baciu
(2 July 2021)
Just outside Cluj-Napoca (German: Klausenburg), in north-western Romania, lies the Hoia Baciu Forest, one of the most visited forests in the world, also known as Romania’s Bermuda Triangle. Why? Over the decades there have been hundreds of reports of paranormal activity, ranging from cell phone outages, sightings of balls of light and ghosts, to people and animals disappearing and returning years later.
The Hoia Baciu Forest takes its name from a shepherd in the region who disappeared into the forest with his flock of sheep. Another story tells of a five-year-old girl who went into the forest and five years later came back wearing the same clothes and not looking a day older. Many stories are about a glade in which nothing grows, and although scientists have examined the land and determined that everything is fine.
And whether you’re looking for the supernatural or just an interesting hike, this forest is a fascinating and unique place and definitely worth a visit.
