Iași was the capital of Moldavia between 1564-1859, one of the two capitals of the United Principalities between 1859 and 1862 and the capital of the Kingdom of Romania between 1916-1918.
You should not miss the opportunity to come to Iași, where “every stone speaks of the past” and a large number of historic buildings, monasteries, museums and memorials. One could say that Iași is a veritable national museum of history and art.
Iași is probably the fourth largest city in Romania (after Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara). Information on inhabitants fluctuates between 350 Tds. and 800 thousand, depending on the source and the surrounding area or just the city.

Horezu Monastery
(28 November 2021)
Horezu Monastery (also known as Hurezi Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of Romanian Orthodox nuns located in the historical region of Valahia Mica in Valcea. At the foot of Căpățânii, a mountain massif of the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romani de Jos, the monastery is located about three kilometers (by air company) north of the small town of Horezu.
The cries of the nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian owls) that roost in the woods surrounding the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then Prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 Until 1862 it was a man’s monastery. After the monks were transferred to Bistri ta, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.
On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. Outside a smaller wall surrounded the whole monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by different buildings and in the east by a wall. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side of a belfry, armored with a solid wooden gate with steel. The monastery church of Sfin ti Impara ti Constantine and Helen built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape is 32 meters long and 32 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697 In the vestibule of the church there are some tombs, most beautifully equipped with marble and carved casing for Prince Brâncoveanu, but it did not fulfill its purpose and therefore was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and encased in gold.
The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was built in 1697 The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

St. Nicholas Church in Densuș
(25 November 2021)
Biserica Sf. Nicolae din Densuș (Demsdorf), judetul Hunedoara din vestul României is the oldest stone church in the country. It was built in its present form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. There are 15th-century murals in the church, showing Jesus in traditional Romanian clothes.
According to Romanian historians, there was once a Dacian temple on the site of today’s church, which was built for the god Zamolxis. Later conquered by the Romans, they again built a temple there, which was dedicated to the god Mars. Given its later prehistory, the origins of this church in Densuș date back to the 4th century AD and is therefore the oldest church in Romania and south-eastern Europe.

Like any Saxon settlement, it is notable for a string of villages around a central square above which rises the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal see of the Evangelical A.B. Church), which fostered the building of one of the largest agricultural communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania that is definitely worth a visit. Learn more …

Romania’s haunted forest, Hoia Baciu
(1 November 2021)
Just outside Cluj-Napoca (German: Klausenburg), in north-western Romania, lies the Hoia Baciu Forest, one of the most visited forests in the world, also known as Romania’s Bermuda Triangle. Why? Over the decades there have been hundreds of reports of paranormal activity, ranging from mobile phone outages, sightings of balls of light and ghosts, to people and animals disappearing and returning years later.
The Hoia Baciu Forest takes its name from a shepherd in the region who disappeared into the forest with his flock of sheep. Another story tells of a five-year-old girl who went into the forest and five years later came back wearing the same clothes and not looking a day older. Many stories are about a glade where nothing grows, and although scientists have examined the land and determined that everything is fine.
And whether you’re looking for the supernatural or just an interesting hike, this forest is a fascinating and unique place and definitely worth a visit.
