Horezu Monastery
(25 September 2021)
Horezu Monastery (also known as Hurezi Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of nuns located in the historical region of Valahia Mica in Valcea. At the foot of Căpățânii, a mountain massif of the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romani de Jos, the monastery is located about three kilometers (by air company) north of the small town of Horezu.
The cries of the nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian loons) that roost in the woods surrounding the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 Until 1862 it was a man’s monastery. After the monks were transferred to Bistri ta, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.
On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The exterior of a smaller wall surrounded the entire monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by different buildings and in the east by a wall. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side of a belfry, armored with a solid wooden gate with steel. The monastery church of Sfin ti Impara ti Constantine and Helen built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape is 32 meters long and 32 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697 In the vestibule of the church there are some tombs, most beautifully equipped with marble and carved casing for Prince Brâncoveanu, but it did not fulfill its purpose and therefore was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and encased in gold.
The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was erected in 1697 The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

St. Nicholas Church in Densuș
(21 September 2021)
The Church of St. Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County in western Romania is the oldest stone church in the country. It was built in its present form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. There are 15th-century murals in the church, showing Jesus in traditional Romanian clothes.
According to Romanian historians, there was once a Dacian temple on the site of today’s church, which was built for the god Zamolxis. Later conquered by the Romans, they again built a temple there, which was dedicated to the god Mars. Given its later prehistory, the origins of this church in Densuș date back to the 4th century AD and is therefore the oldest church in Romania and south-eastern Europe.

Bucovina – Moldovan monasteries
(18 September 2021)
The Moldavian monasteries are located in Bucovina and were built in the 15th and 16th centuries in what was then the Princely Tower of Moldova. The monasteries are famous for their magnificent frescoes. Many of the buildings go back to Stephen the Great, who is believed to have founded a monastery for every battle he won. Eight are World Cultural Heritage sites. The special thing about Moldovan monasteries is their colorful painting, which is unique in Europe. The monks also wanted to bring the contents of the Holy Scriptures closer to the inferior people who could neither read nor write. And so they used the monastery’s interior walls, facades and protective walls to depict scenes and parables from the Bible in colorful drawings, paintings and frescoes. They are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.

The Museum of History of the City and County of Brasov was founded in 1950 and is housed in the former parish hall in the center of the Council Square (Piața Sfatului) or partially in the Weavers’ Bastion of Brasov (Kronstadt).
The bastion, defended and maintained by the linen weavers’ guild, was built in two stages between 1421-1436 and 1570-1573. In the first phase, the first two levels of the three battle galleries were built. The upper galleries, built between 1570 and 1573, were intended for small caliber weapons that could be used through narrow, circular bullet holes throughout the galleries. Two watchtowers were built for the guard, which monitored the city from a military point of view as well as from the point of view of possible fires.
After restoration, the Weavers’ Bastion was turned into a museum.

The mentioned castle has many other names (Corvin’s Castle, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which can be attributed to this location.
After 1440, Hungarian statesman and army leader Johann Hunyadi had an existing military institution converted into the Hunyadis headquarters. In the second phase of construction, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. In the early 19th century, under Prince Gábor Bethlen, there were major changes to the structure. Today’s castle therefore has a mixture of different architectural styles.
The castle was in Austria in 1724 and became Romanian state property in 1918. Besides attracting tourists, the castle is (and has been) used as a backdrop for a variety of Romanian and international movie productions. There is a museum in the castle these days.
Thank you Go Hunedoara for permission to use these wonderful pictures.

Mogoșoaia Castle, near Bucharest
(6 September 2021 / Images: September 2021)
In Ilfov County, just a few kilometers northwest of Bucharest (Romania’s capital), Mogoșoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogoșoaia in Mogoșoaia. The castle contains a main courtyard and many buildings such as the watchtower and the church ′′Sf. Gheorghe′′ close to the courtyard.
The Wallachian Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu built the castle between 1698 and 1702 on the widow’s Mogoș (later named Mogoșoaia) in the Brâncoveanu style named after him.
In 1714, when Constantin Brâncoveanu was executed in Constantinople with his entire family, the Ottomans confiscated all the family’s possessions and turned the palace into a Han (a kind of inn). In the following decades, the castle was conquered, destroyed and rebuilt several times, until it was owned by George III in 1912 Valentin Bibesco married the French writer Marthe Bibesco, who was born into Romanian nobility. He gave the property to his wife, Marthe Bibesco then rebuilt the castle intensively.
The castle can be visited without entrance fee, it has a wonderful large park where you can / are allowed, for example, to have a picnic or just laze the day away. Inside the castle you pay a fee of approx. 10 lei (2,10 euro) for parking, restaurants, museums and much more… also an extended walk with the rest on a bench overlooking the lake… many things are possible and beautiful.
Beware… you should not take the camera with you or put it in your pocket!!! Pictures with your cell phone are no problem, but as a ‘camera owner’ you are already vehemently advised at the entrance that for professional photography you have to pay a fee of 400 Lei (approx. EUR 80).

Bucovina – Moldovan monasteries
(4 September 2021)
These are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.

Peles Castle is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the town of Sinaia. It was built between 1873 and 1883 for King Carol I of Romania and seized by the communist regime in 1947. After the Romanian Revolution in 1989, Peles was transferred back to the former King Michael, who at the time was living in exile in Switzerland. The bay windows and paved walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the home of the king. Seven terraces surround the castle. Some of the 160 rooms can now be visited. The castle museum has weapons, sculptures, furniture and decorative objects from the 15th-19th centuries, as well as an orchestrion. Above all, the castle impresses with its splendid woodwork.

Romania’s haunted forest, Hoia Baciu
(1 September 2021)
Just outside Cluj-Napoca (German: Klausenburg), in north-western Romania, lies the Hoia Baciu Forest, one of the most visited forests in the world, also known as Romania’s Bermuda Triangle. Why? Over the decades there have been hundreds of reports of paranormal activity, ranging from mobile phone outages, sightings of balls of light and ghosts, to people and animals disappearing and returning years later.
The Hoia Baciu Forest takes its name from a shepherd in the region who disappeared into the forest with his flock of sheep. Another story tells of a five-year-old girl who went into the forest and five years later came back wearing the same clothes and not looking a day older. Many stories are about a glade in which nothing grows, and although scientists have examined the land and determined that everything is fine.
And whether you are looking for the supernatural or just an interesting hike, this forest is a fascinating and unique place and definitely worth a visit.
